Chip ejector - characteristics, how to make it yourself

The collection of shavings and wood dust in the carpentry workshop is carried out using special aspiration units. You can purchase professional equipment or make a chip extractor yourself using improvised means. The device can be used directly while woodworking machines are operating or after they are turned off to clean walls and floors indoors. The device helps remove allergy-causing dust generated during drilling, stripping, and sanding wood.

Operating principle of the chip ejector

If you connect the device to the ventilation system, you will get a standard hood that allows you to leave warm air in the room, while simultaneously removing dust and shavings, not only wood, but also plastic and metal. In fact, we are talking about a device that imitates an industrial vacuum cleaner, the use of which will allow you to avoid connecting exhaust ventilation for a small workshop. The technique allows you to remove elements as small as 5 microns. The UVP chip ejector is used in the production of bulk substances and in the woodworking process.

The unit operates according to a standard scheme, which involves connecting a corrugated hose with a small cross-section to the body of the chip ejector structure. Thanks to this, it is possible to strengthen and, most importantly, concentrate cravings.

The type of attachment used for the handpiece depends on the tasks solved by the device. The motor is located in the upper segment of the device and is directly connected to the impeller. When it rotates, the air becomes rarefied, which creates the draft necessary to remove dust and chips. The sucked products settle in the container, and the air masses are removed through a pipe equipped with a filter that provides coarse and fine cleaning. The classic design of the device involves the manufacture of a cylinder installed in a vertical plane, narrowed towards the bottom.

The fan creates a rarefied atmosphere, due to which polluted air is drawn into the housing, where it swirls under the influence of centrifugal forces. It is as a result of this that the waste ends up in the lower part of the apparatus, in which the storage hopper is located. The dispersed mixture is collected in a filter unit, which is characterized by regeneration provided by regular shaking.

Attention! There is an additional operating mode that involves collecting waste from the floor.

Features of using a vacuum cleaner

Working with a chip suction

A vacuum cleaner for carpentry can be used in various cases:

  1. The suction pipe can be fixed next to the work area. Thanks to this, it will be possible to achieve instant removal of waste and dust.
  2. A better result can be achieved if you use a tool with a special adapter pipe. It attaches to the suction arm. This complicates the work a little, since you have to work with the connected hose, but all sawdust and wood residues will be removed instantly. Most woodworking tools are equipped with such an adapter.
  3. If you connect the circular saw directly to the vacuum cleaner, then cutting the wood will not be accompanied by a strong scattering of debris.

Many models carry out not only dry, but also wet cleaning of the room.

Types of chip ejectors

There are several varieties of such equipment, identified according to different classifications.

There are units for domestic use, which include homemade chip ejectors for carpentry, made from improvised devices. An alternative to such installations are professional units; in addition to them, there are universal models on the market that are suitable for use in different conditions.

There are different types of equipment depending on the specific application, including:

  • portable, quickly mounted models used in enterprises with small production areas;
  • industrial stationary chip ejectors. The units are suitable for simultaneous operation with several machines and are supplied with kits used for connection;
  • mobile equipment, characterized by low power, is therefore used at home.

A typical example of industrial equipment is chip ejectors model UVP 2000, used in the production of furniture, wood processing, the manufacture of plastic products, doors, aluminum windows, and the transfer of dust-producing bulk materials into other containers. The technique has several advantages that appear during operation:

  • retain warm air in the room;
  • there is no need to equip a special place;
  • prepare quickly for work;
  • There are no difficulties during maintenance.

Such a UVP chip ejector cannot be used in conjunction with grinding machines, since this creates gas-dust mixtures that are explosive. The electric motor of this model is connected in parallel to the start button to save electricity during operation.

Description, types

Advantages of using chip ejectors in production

In manufacturing enterprises and carpentry workshops, both small carpentry vacuum cleaners and chip extractors are used. Construction vacuum cleaners are not only designed for removing construction waste, they are used anywhere there are large volumes of waste. They apply:

  • in warehouses and garages;
  • in parks, in yards for cleaning leaves;
  • in premises after renovation;
  • in production;
  • in workshops.

Carpentry vacuum cleaners are divided into two groups:

  1. Semi-professional - differ from household ones in greater power. They are designed for cleaning in small workshops and garages.
  2. Professional - in this category, chip ejectors are used for carpentry workshops. They are designed to remove wood dust and shavings. A distinctive feature of the device is its large volume.

Having a construction vacuum cleaner provides a number of advantages:

  1. The workplace will always be kept clean.
  2. The absence of debris improves the quality and accuracy of the work performed.
  3. The service life of tools, attachments, and consumables increases.
  4. Cleaning and cleaning the instrument will take much less time.

Important! Having a vacuum cleaner for your carpentry shop will help increase productivity and bring savings to the owner!

Design features

A standard UVP chip extractor consists of a housing, an air duct, an electric motor, filters and their racks, as well as a clamp, a storage tank, and a fan impeller. The design of the device includes a stand and a pipe.

The equipment is equipped with pocket and cylindrical cartridge filters. The filtration element can be fabric or perforated paper; manufacturers also use synthetic fibers or cardboard. The filter bags are placed upside down. When the fan is not running, they are held in place by lightweight metal spacers.

Filter elements are regenerated automatically or manually without dismantling them. Some filters are equipped with handles that allow cleaning by shaking. There are models in which this procedure is performed automatically, immediately after the engine stops running. Regeneration can be carried out by blowing compressed air onto the filter surface.

Storage bags for chip suction are used to collect production waste. They are made of plastic or tarpaulin. If the design includes a cyclone, then the equipment is additionally equipped with metal tanks for separate collection of dust and chips. Start-up protection equipment allows you to control equipment and prevent breakdowns arising from overloads. Some modifications are equipped with remote controls that provide remote start and shutdown of the device. The reliability of the unit depends on the quality of the snap-on, easily removable clamps that ensure the tightness of the disposal bags and filters.

Helpful advice! Facilitates the movement of the chassis, allowing you to easily move equipment within the premises.

Structurally, two-stage and one-stage aspiration units are distinguished.

Single-stage machines are equipped with a chip removal fan located at the bottom or in the middle of the frame and equipped with blades located in a volute casing. Heavy and large chips settle in the lower disposal bag, and the upper dust is cut off by a filter located above. This system ensures the return of purified air to the room.

Two-stage machines are equipped with fans located at the top of the frame. Before air enters them, it is freed from large impurities by a cyclone filter, which has a cylindrical shape with a lower narrowed part. The air drawn into the cyclone begins to rotate, subjected to centrifugal force. Due to this, large fractions settle down and fall into the receiver located under the cyclone. Typically, the impeller for a portable chip extractor is made of plastic. The material is immune to mechanical damage associated with impacts from large wood waste.

Professional equipment is equipped with a 230 mm steel impeller, which draws in and then crushes waste.

Debris is sucked through a flexible hose for a chip suction device, the diameter of which can be 100 mm; any type of nozzle for cleaning industrial premises can be attached to it.

Device Features

As a rule, the air stream should be cleared of debris and passed through a container of water or a cloth filter. This will be quite enough to retain dust and small household debris. The vacuum cleaner for sawdust and shavings has a slightly different design.

It does not have a fabric filter, because it will only create unnecessary resistance to air flow.

Wood shavings, sawdust and dust should be removed from the air ceiling into a centrifugal force apparatus, namely a cyclone. In most large industries, industrial-type chip vacuum cleaners are used to suck out large sawdust and shavings and the working area of a wood processing machine. These are large devices with incredible power, although they are designed in the same way as small carpentry-type vacuum cleaners.

Do-it-yourself chip ejector and cyclone

Preparatory work

  • development of a plan containing information on the procedure for manufacturing and assembling structural elements;
  • purchase and testing of an electric motor;
  • preparation of materials, tools;
  • drawing up a drawing.

Required Tools

  • drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • knife;
  • clamps;
  • pencil;
  • compass.

In addition, you will need a set of drills, which should have a 50 - 60 mm core drill for working on wood.

Materials and fasteners

To make a chip extractor with your own hands, you will need an air duct. In fact, you can take a hose from a vacuum cleaner, the main thing is that it is in a textile braid and has a corrugated structure. You will need a sewer pipe up to 150 mm long and at least 50 mm in diameter. Stock up on a sewer outlet with an angle of 45° and a length of up to 200 mm. Buy a plastic, hermetically sealed bucket with a volume of 10 - 25 liters and the same, but smaller in the range of 5 - 10 liters.

Helpful advice! The main thing is that the difference between the largest diameters of the buckets is 70 mm.

Additionally you will need:

  • plywood sheet 20 mm thick - the main thing is that its size exceeds the diameter of a large bucket;
  • self-tapping screws with a wide, flat head for wood: their thickness should be 2/3 of the thickness of the plywood;
  • universal gel-based sealant.

Making a cyclone filter

The process of making a filter yourself includes several stages:

  1. Installation of the fixing ring.
  2. Fixing the side pipe.
  3. Attaching the top entry.
  4. Installation of shaped insert.
  5. Filter assembly.

Creating a retaining ring and a shaped insert

  1. Cut the side of the small bucket that the lid attaches to to create a cylinder.
  2. Now place the bucket on a sheet of plywood and outline its bottom with a pencil to obtain a circle for which, guided by the basics of geometry, we determine the center.
  3. After this, a second circle is drawn, with a diameter 30 mm larger than the first.
  4. Now we cut out the parts along these circles with a jigsaw in order to get a ring with an insert.

Installing the Retaining Ring

Installation of the fixing ring begins with the fact that it is attached to the edge of a small bucket, as a result of which a side is formed.

  1. We use self-tapping screws for this.
  2. It is necessary to drill holes before this to avoid splitting the plywood.
  3. Now you need to mark the lid of a large bucket by placing it on it and tracing it with a pencil.
  4. All that remains is to cut out the part with a knife and install it on the side of a small bucket, securing it with self-tapping screws.

Helpful advice! Ensure the tightness of all connections before installing the parts by lubricating them with sealant.

Installing the side pipe

We use a 45° sewer outlet to make the pipe. To install it, you need to drill a hole with a crown in the upper section of a small bucket, the function of which is now performed by the bottom. Having drilled a hole, make it drop-shaped using a knife, thereby ensuring a reliable fit of the pipe, which is fixed with sealant and self-tapping screws.

Top entry installation

  1. It is necessary to drill a hole in the upper segment of a small bucket, where the center of the bottom used to be.
  2. To completely secure the pipe, you need to use a square piece of plywood, the thickness of which is 20 mm, its central hole should be designed for a pipe with a diameter of 50 mm.
  3. The workpiece is fastened from below with self-tapping screws, preferably there are 4 of them.
  4. The tightness of the joints is ensured with the help of a sealant, through which the upper pipe is fixed, without the use of additional fasteners.

Installing a shaped insert

The shaped insert is fixed in the cyclone filter with self-tapping screws through its outer wall.

Cyclone filter assembly

The completed structure is placed on a large bucket, resulting in a device with an approximate height of 520 mm. The main task at this stage is to correctly connect the air ducts, carried out according to the following scheme:

1. The upper pipe is attached to the vacuum cleaner.

2. The outlet entering at an angle from the side is connected to the hose.

DIY cyclone from a barrel. FORUMHOUSE experience

Wood has always been considered an environmentally friendly and safe material. Fine wood dust generated during processing of a wooden workpiece is not as harmless as it might seem. Inhaling it does not at all contribute to saturating the body with useful microelements. Accumulating in the lungs and upper respiratory tract (and wood dust is not processed by the body), it slowly but effectively destroys the respiratory system. Large chips constantly accumulate near machines and working tools. It is better to remove it immediately, without waiting for insurmountable blockages to appear in the carpentry workshop.

In order to maintain the required level of cleanliness in your home carpentry, you can buy an expensive exhaust system consisting of a powerful fan, a cyclone, chip catchers, a container for chips and auxiliary elements. But the users of our portal are not those who are used to buying something that they can do with their own hands. Using their experience, anyone can build an exhaust system with the power to meet the needs of a small home workshop.

Vacuum cleaner for collecting sawdust

Chip extraction using a conventional household vacuum cleaner is the most budget option of all existing solutions. And if you manage to use your old cleaning assistant, who, out of pity, has not yet been thrown into the trash, it means that your inherent frugality has once again served you well.

ADKXXIFORUMHOUSE User

My vacuum cleaner is over fifty years old (brand: “Uralets”). It copes well with the role of a chip sucker. He is only as heavy as my sins, but he can not only suck, but also blow. Sometimes I take advantage of this opportunity.

By itself, a household vacuum cleaner, installed in a place of honor in the workshop as a chip extractor, will be useless. And the main reason for this is that the volume of the bag (container) for collecting dust is too small. That is why between the vacuum cleaner and the machine there must be an additional exhaust system unit, consisting of a cyclone and a large tank for collecting sawdust.

OsyaForumHouse user

The simplest installation is a vacuum cleaner and a cyclone. Moreover, the vacuum cleaner can be used at home. Instead of a cyclone (cylindrical cone), a separating cap can be used.

DIY sawdust vacuum cleaner

The design of the chip suction device we are considering is extremely simple.

The device consists of two main modules: a cyclone (item 1) and a container for chips (item 2). The principle of its operation is as follows: using a vacuum cleaner, a vacuum is created in the cyclone chamber. Due to the difference in pressure inside and outside the device, sawdust, along with air and dust, enters the internal cavity of the cyclone. Here, under the influence of inertia and gravity forces, mechanical suspensions are separated from the air flow and fall into the lower container.

Let's look at the design of the device in more detail.

Cyclone

The cyclone can be made in the form of a lid that is installed on top of the storage tank, or you can simply combine these two modules. First, let's consider the second option - a cyclone made in the body of a container for chips.

First of all, we should purchase a tank with a suitable volume.

ForceUser FORUMHOUSE user, Moscow.

Capacity – 65 l. I took it on the principle that I needed volume and convenience when carrying a filled container. This barrel has handles, which is very convenient for cleaning it.

Here is a list of additional elements and materials that we will need to assemble the device:

  • Screws, washers and nuts - for fastening the inlet pipe;
  • A section of sewer pipe with cuffs;
  • Transition coupling (from the sewer pipe to the suction pipe of the vacuum cleaner);
  • Gun with assembly glue.

Do-it-yourself vacuum cleaner from a barrel: assembly sequence

First of all, a hole is made in the side of the tank for the inlet pipe, which will be located tangentially to the body. The figure shows a view from the outside of the tank.

It is advisable to install the pipe in the upper part of the plastic barrel. This will allow you to achieve the maximum degree of cleaning.

From the inside, the inlet pipe looks like this.

The gaps between the pipe and the walls of the tank should be filled with mounting sealant.

At the next stage, we make a hole in the lid, insert the adapter coupling there and carefully seal all the cracks around the pipe. Ultimately, the design of the chip ejector will look like this.

The vacuum cleaner is connected to the upper outlet of the device, and the pipe that removes chips from the machine is threaded into the side pipe.

As you can see, the presented design is not equipped with additional filters, which does not greatly affect the quality of air purification.

den_61User FORUMHOUSE

I made a chip pump based on the theme. The basis is a 400 W “Rocket” vacuum cleaner and a 100 liter barrel. After assembly of the unit, tests were successfully carried out. Everything works as it should: sawdust is in the barrel, the vacuum cleaner bag is empty. So far, the dust collector is connected only to the router.

Be that as it may, the cyclone still cannot retain a certain percentage of wood dust. And in order to maximize the degree of cleaning, some users of our portal are thinking about the need to install an additional fine filter. Yes, a filter is needed, but not every filter element will be appropriate.

OsyaForumHouse user

I think that installing a fine filter after the cyclone is not entirely correct. Or rather, you need to install it, but you will be tired of cleaning it (you will have to very often). There the filter fabric will just roll around (like a bag in a vacuum cleaner). In my Corvette, the top bag catches the bulk of the fine dust. I see this when I remove the bottom bag to remove sawdust.

A fabric filter can be created by attaching a frame to the top cover of the cyclone and covering it with dense material (can be tarpaulin).

The main task of the cyclone is to remove sawdust and dust from the working area (from the machine, etc.). Therefore, the quality of cleaning the air flow from fine suspended matter plays a secondary role in our case. And, taking into account that a standard dust collector installed in a vacuum cleaner will certainly retain the remaining debris (not filtered by the cyclone), we will achieve the required degree of cleaning.

Cyclone cover

As we have already said, the cyclone can be made in the form of a lid that will be placed on the storage tank. A working example of such a device is shown in the photo.

PointLogsUser FORUMHOUSE

The design should be clear from the photographs. The plastic was soldered with a regular soldering iron using a fine steel mesh. The cyclone is quite effective: when filling a 40-liter barrel, no more than a glass of garbage has accumulated in the vacuum cleaner bag.

Despite the fact that this cyclone is part of a homemade construction vacuum cleaner, it can be successfully integrated into the design of a carpentry chip ejector.

Sawdust pipeline

It is better to purchase hoses connected to the chip ejector from a vacuum cleaner. A plastic pipeline with smooth inner walls can be laid along the wall. It will connect the machine to the suction pipe of the cyclone.

A certain danger is posed by static electricity, which is formed during the movement of sawdust through a plastic pipe: sawdust sticking to the walls of the pipeline, ignition of wood dust, etc. If you want to neutralize this phenomenon, it is better to do this during the construction of the sawdust pipeline.

Not all owners of home workshops pay attention to the phenomenon of static electricity inside the sawdust pipe. But if you design the chip suction in accordance with fire safety rules, then a corrugated material with a built-in metal conductor should be used as a sawdust duct. Connecting such a system to a grounding loop will help avoid problems during operation.

alex_k11FORUMHOUSE user

Plastic pipes must be grounded. Hoses should be taken with a wire, otherwise static will accumulate very strongly.

Here's a solution to combat static electricity in plastic pipes that one FORUMHOUSE user suggests: wrap the plastic pipe with foil and connect it to the ground loop.

Exhaust devices

The design of devices that remove chips directly from the working parts of carpentry equipment depends on the characteristics of the machines themselves. Therefore, products made of plastic, plywood and other suitable materials can be used as exhaust elements.

den_61User FORUMHOUSE

The dust collector is connected only to the router. I don’t see any point in connecting it to the saw in the same way, since most of the sawdust flies down. That is why the idea arose to make a dust collector under the saw - on hangers.

Drive housing

You already have a general idea of what a chip storage tank should look like. The only thing we did not mention right away is the deformation of the housing, which can occur if the suction line becomes clogged.

In order to solve this problem, the tank body can be equipped with a metal frame, or several metal hoops of suitable diameter can be inserted inside (as suggested by user alex_k11). The design will be more bulky, but absolutely reliable.

Chip ejector for several machines

A system based on a household vacuum cleaner has low productivity. Therefore, it can only serve one machine at a time. In other words, if there are several machines, the suction pipe will have to be connected to them alternately. It is also possible to install the chip ejector centrally. But in order to ensure that the suction power does not drop, idle machines should be disconnected from the general system using dampers (dampers).

The vacuum cleaner, cyclone and storage tank can be installed on a single wheelbase, which will significantly increase the mobility of the chip ejector.

Some users of our portal are worried that using a household vacuum cleaner in a carpentry workshop creates a fire safety hazard. Here's what their opponents think about this.

DimentionUser FORUMHOUSE

Vacuum cleaners are designed for ordinary dust, which is filtered by a standard fine filter. And the concentration of wood dust after it is zero (on the scale of ignition). So this problem is far-fetched.

Cyclone type chip suction device

A cyclone type apparatus is used to filter the air exhausted outside. The design of the product is designed to remove large elements in the form of large wood chips. A flanged electric motor with a power of 3.5 kW is used for such a unit. The air is rarefied using a fan equipped with a large, reliable impeller capable of creating the necessary draft. The multi-stage filter first separates large elements and then filters out small particles. The chips are collected by a lower cyclone and stored in a collection bag. The body of the aspiration unit is completely sealed and covered with sound-absorbing panels. Control is carried out by a mechanical and electrical unit. The corrugated hose onto which the nozzle is placed is connected through a special hole.

Video about how the chip pump works

How to make it yourself

An industrial type vacuum cleaner for removing chips and dust consists of several main parts, namely:

  • Air duct.
  • Vacuum pump.
  • Working nozzle.
  • Cyclone filter.

If you set yourself the goal of making a full-fledged chip pump with your own hands, then we suggest considering which units and components can be used ready-made, and which ones you will need to make yourself from scrap materials.

Pump

If you need to make a productive and powerful vacuum cleaner in order to remove metal shavings in a metalworking room, then you will need to find or make your own centrifugal pump.

If you are careful, you can make the snail assembly and centrifugal wheel yourself out of plywood with your own hands, and also use metal corners as an addition. For the pump drive, an electric motor should be used, the power of which will be from 1500 to 2500 W.

Please note that if you are planning work in a carpentry workshop, then it will be easiest to use the simplest household vacuum cleaner as a pump. Given that shavings are much heavier than household dust, you should choose the most powerful vacuum cleaner model available.

Air ducts

If you are designing a high-performance chip extractor for your workshop, you must be very careful in choosing the materials and sizes from which the air connections will be made.

The larger the air outlet size, the less power loss will occur. In a small pipe, not only will the air flow be greatly inhibited, but also, after a while, “plugs” may begin to form from accumulations of small chips, as well as dust residues from the wood.

At the moment, you can find ready-made corrugated hoses on sale for creating air ducts of different diameters. A spiral-type frame, which is made of spring steel, will provide such air ducts with a sufficient level of strength. When assembling air ducts from such a corrugated hose, you should pay attention to how to seal the joints and connections. The slightest cracks can cause the device to begin to suck in air and reduce the efficiency of the entire device as a whole.

It will be quite convenient to use polypropylene sewer pipes, which already have couplings and cuffs, for assembling air ducts. This will ensure ease of disassembly and assembly, while ensuring a tight and reliable connection. If you are constructing a carpentry chip extractor with your own hands according to a drawing based on a home vacuum cleaner, then you can use polypropylene pipes for the air duct, as well as pipes with a diameter of 3.2 and 4 cm. These are the most popular sizes, and a wide range of fittings makes it possible to assemble ingenious designs without any problems. Polypropylene parts are also useful for making a filter.

Cyclone filter

The most complex and quite interesting unit in the design of an industrial chip ejector. Naturally, you can purchase a ready-made cyclone. Cyclone-type air cleaning units are manufactured industrially in a variety of sizes and with varying degrees of productivity. This ensures a high level of cleaning efficiency as well as ease of maintenance.

But it will be much more interesting and also cheaper to assemble the unit yourself. It’s easy to find ready-made drawings online, as well as technologies for assembling a cyclone filter from scrap materials. But the design and dimensions of the cyclone filter will largely depend on what exactly you have available. In order to remove all accumulated waste from time to time, the filter must be equipped with a removable lid or hatch, and it must fit tightly and prevent even the slightest air leak.

The following can be used as a working container:

  • Homemade container.
  • A large plastic bucket for paint and varnish materials.
  • A plastic barrel with a capacity of several tens of liters.

Please note that you can assemble a container for collecting dust and shavings with your own hands, for example, from plywood. When making a container from wood, the joints must be carefully coated with sealant and the individual parts must be firmly connected.

But the most difficult thing will be to provide a hole in the design for waste removal, which must close tightly. You can use the cut-out top of a paint can, for example, because the lid is easy to open but still provides a tight seal to empty the trash. It will be convenient to use a bucket that closes tightly for the filter housing. Putties, paints, and building mixtures are usually sold in such containers. From a bucket with a capacity of about 20 liters you can make a mobile and compact filter for a carpentry chip extractor based on a conventional vacuum cleaner.

The best cyclone-type filters for the workshop are made from a plastic barrel with a tightly screwed lid. Such barrels can have a capacity of 20-150 liters, but it is worth keeping in mind that a square-shaped barrel will not work, only a round one is required. The key part of the cyclone will be a device for suction from the container and supplying a dirty air stream from the nozzle. Air suction is performed vertically along the axis of the filter, and the suction pipe can be attached directly to the center of the lid of the bucket or barrel. Just take into account the fact that ideal results will be obtained if you suck out the air not from under the lid itself, but at a height of ½ to 2/3 of the container size. For this reason, not a short pipe will pass through the lid, but a tube of the required length.

The dirty air flow is supplied from above, but horizontally. And this is where the trick comes in. In order for the air flow to swirl along the wall of the cyclone, the inlet pipe must be directed along the wall.

The easiest way to organize such a flow is to install a corner as an inlet pipe. The air that enters the nozzle will turn the flow 90 degrees and be directed along the wall of the cyclone, but in the corner nozzle the air flow will slow down greatly, and in addition, chips and dust will accumulate in the corner. A high-quality solution would be to install the inlet pipe in the form of a straight tube, which is mounted obliquely as close as possible to the wall of the tank.

It will allow contaminants to get inside the cyclone without hindrance and accelerate perfectly along the wall. This will create a powerful spiral flow. The connections must be rigid, and when the chip ejector is operating, the cyclone body will vibrate noticeably. Be sure to ensure excellent tightness, and to do this, use elastic sealants, which are used for installing plumbing fixtures and windows.

Working attachment

How to make a chip ejector for a metal-cutting machine? It is possible to assemble a rigid air duct structure, which is fixed to the machine frame. If the device is used for a carpentry workshop, then the hose of the working nozzle must be flexible and long, and ordinary hoses from a household vacuum cleaner are ideal for this.

It is especially convenient that the hoses from the vacuum cleaner fit perfectly together, and also the “crevice” nozzle for the hose that comes with a household vacuum cleaner is perfect for sucking out chips and dust. Without a nozzle, a household hose is usually tightly connected to the nozzle of a hand-held electric jigsaw or belt sander.

Cyclone made of plastic buckets

You can make a cyclone yourself using ordinary plastic buckets.

Required Tools

To do this, you will have to use a router, jigsaw, heat gun, utility knife and drill. You will also need a Festul tape measure, a screwdriver, pliers and a pencil. Stock up on a 50 mm crown drill.

Necessary materials

For work we will use a 30-liter plastic tank, thermal glue, PVC pipe, laminated chipboard and silicone sealant. To make a cyclone you will need bolts, nuts, self-tapping screws, adhesive tape and electrical tape. A vacuum cleaner and a corrugated hose are a must.

Step-by-step assembly instructions

  1. It is necessary to make lids for buckets from laminated chipboard, which must be trimmed using a milling machine.
  2. By processing the edges, we form a groove necessary to ensure an airtight and tight fit of the lid, in order to avoid air being sucked through the cracks.
  3. The cover for the cyclone is cut out in the same way.
  4. Then a silicone seal is applied to the bucket and a lid is put on, in which a hole is cut to allow the two containers to be combined.
  5. A landing groove is formed from the inside, and then the bottom of the bucket is cut out, from which a cone is made, cutting out a sector and gluing these parts together.
  6. This structure needs to be tightened with clamps and dried.
  7. The groove located on the hopper lid is filled with thermal glue.
  8. Cut off the excess glue with a knife, on which, by the way, you will need to place a silicone seal.
  9. Drill a hole in the center of the lid using a drill and a 50 mm hole saw. A piece of PVC pipe 120 mm long is inserted there, having previously treated the seat with sealant.
  10. Now drill a hole in the side of the body for a 45° pipe, secured with bolts and nuts.
  11. All that remains is to install the cover for the final assembly of the block, to which the vacuum cleaner is connected through an adapter using a corrugated hose wrapped with electrical tape.

The glue hardens quickly, so you need to quickly carry out all the procedures, otherwise the bucket will stand crooked.

Chip removal materials and fasteners

A self-made structure must be airtight and light enough. At the same time, it must withstand the pressure that occurs during cyclic rotation of air. To make a reliable device you will need:

  • Plywood thickness within 4 mm. A durable case can be easily made from it;
  • Wooden blocks of different sections;
  • Polycarbonate;
  • Filter. A filter from an injection VAZ is suitable for the chip suction filter system. It is inexpensive, but does a good job of retaining large and small particles;
  • Engine. You can buy it new or take it from an old vacuum cleaner;
  • Sealant, self-tapping screws, bolts and nuts. Fasteners must be selected so that they provide reliable sealing of the equipment;
  • Snail type fan. Inside such a device there should be a powerful impeller for chip removal, that is, blades that capture air;
  • Adapters for connecting individual hoses (pipes) of the chip ejector. They are mainly required if the device is designed to collect large amounts of chips.

Cyclone with figured insert

  1. The cyclone is made from a pair of plastic buckets with a volume of 10 and 5 liters.
  2. It is necessary to cut off the top side of a five-liter bucket and, placing the container on a plywood sheet, outline it with a pencil, subsequently making another blank measuring 30 mm.
  3. Using a crown, a hole is made inside the ring, forming an outline for a shaped insert.
  4. It is necessary to insert a jigsaw into each of the holes one by one to cut out a fixing ring with an insert that looks like an unfinished circle, characterized by an expanded base with a diameter of 100 mm.
  5. Place the ring on the lid on the back of the larger bucket and trace it with a pencil, cutting out the middle with a knife.
  6. A hole is drilled in the upper part of a small bucket, a fixing ring is put on it, and self-tapping screws are screwed into it through the holes.
  7. You need to put a fixing belt on the circle of the lid from a large bucket, securing it with self-tapping screws.
  8. Now make one hole in the cyclone, on top and on the side, using a ø 40 mm bit.
  9. Cut a square with a 40 mm opening from plywood and place the frame on the case cover, aligning the two holes, securing it all with self-tapping screws from the inside.
  10. Somewhat below the ring, a shaped insert is attached, the body of which includes self-tapping screws screwed in from the outside.

After this, all that remains is to do the following:

  • PVC tube is inserted into the frame;
  • give the hole located on the side the shape of a drop;
  • glue the pipe into the opening;
  • put the case on the drive and snap the cover;
  • insert the vacuum cleaner hose into the outlet located on top;
  • seal the seams with glue.

Operating principle

The cyclone, as it may seem at first glance, was created even primitively. This is an ordinary large round container (barrel or bucket). The incoming air flow begins to enter the upper part of the container, and at the same time the air stream is directed horizontally, along the wall. Due to this, the flow begins to twist spirally. The centrifugal force begins to throw all solid particles of debris towards the wall, and they gradually begin to collect at the bottom of the container. Since the air is light, the purified flow gradually begins to calm down in the center of the round container.

The vacuum of the cyclone inside the housing is created by suction of air from the pipe, which is located exactly along the axis of the container. In this part of the cyclone, the air is already cleared of sawdust, dust and shavings, and for this reason can be sucked out using any pump of suitable capacity. Even a household vacuum cleaner is often used as a pump. The design of an industrial cyclone-based chip extractor usually uses a special pump. As a rule, pumps of a centrifugal type are used here, and it looks like a “squirrel wheel” with blades placed across it, instead of the most common spokes.

The wheel should be placed in a housing that is shaped like a snail. A centrifugal wheel driven by an electric motor begins to accelerate the air mass around the ring and strongly throws it out through the exhaust pipe, which is located on the outside of the pump. In addition, a vacuum appears in the center of the centrifugal wheel. The pump design is characterized by excellent performance and unpretentiousness.

Please note that such devices are capable of sucking out even very contaminated air, and this makes them even more valuable in the design of an industrial vacuum cleaner based on cyclone cleaning.

Cyclone from a road token

  1. Cut off the top and bottom of the cone, turn the chip over and insert it into a container that serves as a garbage container.
  2. Cut out a round cover comparable in size to the top opening and use a crown to cut a hole in it for a PVC pipe with a diameter of 40 mm.
  3. Make a teardrop-shaped hole on the side and glue the corner pipe into it.
  4. Treat the connections with a glue gun and connect the product to the vacuum cleaner using a hose, which will also need to be connected to the nozzle that collects waste.

Preparatory work

As mentioned above, you can make a cyclone filter for a workshop in half an hour, but to do this you need to check the availability of everything necessary for the production of a chip blower with your own hands, namely: tools, materials and consumables.

Tools

To carry out the work, the following tools will be needed:

  1. electric drill,
  2. screwdriver,
  3. jigsaw,
  4. compass,
  5. knife,
  6. clamps,
  7. Phillips screwdriver,
  8. pencil,
  9. core drill for wood (50-60mm),
  10. set of drills.

Materials and fasteners

Materials can be used both new and used, so carefully review the list below - you may already have something in stock;

  1. The air duct (hose) for a vacuum cleaner is corrugated or in a textile braid.
  2. A sewer pipe with a diameter of 50 mm and a length of 100–150 mm, into one of the ends of which the air duct of your household vacuum cleaner should be inserted.
  3. Sewer outlet 30 or 45 degrees, 100–200 mm long, into one end of which the air duct specified in paragraph 1 will be inserted.
  4. Plastic bucket (“large”) 11-26 liters with a hermetically sealed lid.
  5. Bucket (“small”) plastic 5-11 liters. Note. It is important that the difference between the two maximum diameters of the buckets is approximately 60–70 mm.
  6. A sheet of plywood 15–20 mm thick. Note. The sheet size must be larger than the maximum diameter of the Large Bucket.
  7. Wood screws with a flat wide head and a length of 2/3 of the thickness of plywood.
  8. Universal gel sealant.

Chip extraction from the sewer riser

You can make a chip extractor from a plastic sewer pipe.

Tools to complete the task:

Use a drill, angle grinder, glue gun, riveter, construction knife and electric jigsaw.

Materials

Buy PVC pipes ø 100 mm and ø 40 mm, rivets, a hose, a glue stick, clamps and a couple of two-liter bottles, as well as a five-liter bottle.

Step-by-step instructions for assembling a chip ejector

  1. Cut the neck off the riser and cut the bottle, leaving a cone with a neck and stopper.
  2. Drill holes in the plugs, tighten them with clamps and glue them with guns.
  3. Insert the bottle into the riser from below and secure them with clamps and glue.
  4. Make a forty-millimeter hole on the side and connect a 70 mm pipe there.
  5. Cut out three circles of ø 100 mm from tin, in the center of each of them make a hole with a diameter of 40 mm, cutting these disks in half and connecting them with rivets to make a screw.
  6. Pass the 40 mm pipe inside the spiral and connect it to the auger.
  7. Pull this structure into the riser, leaving a 100 mm protrusion at the top, inserting the auger inside the housing.

Then proceed like this:

  • cut off the neck and bottom of the eggplant, which connects to the upper end of the pipe;
  • Glue the upper hole of the neck with the internal pipe outlet;
  • pipe, connected to the collection nozzle with a hose;
  • You need to connect the vertical output to the vacuum cleaner.

Do-it-yourself snail for chip removal

  1. The snail body can be metal or plywood, the air intake wheel is made using plastic.
  2. The impeller blades are made curved; they can also be turned to the radius line by 45° with the inner edge.
  3. Adapter couplings with hoses are used for connection to the outlet filter.
  4. The wheel axle is connected to the motor shaft, and then the belt drive is mounted.

Helpful advice! You can increase productivity by isolating the pulley from the side opening.

Principle of operation

There are a great many different designs of cyclones, but they all share the same operating principle. All designs of cyclone chip suckers consist of three main parts:

  • Household vacuum cleaner
  • Cyclone filter
  • Waste collection container

Its design is such that the flow of intake air is directed in a circle and its rotational movement is obtained. Accordingly, the construction waste contained in this air flow (these are large and heavy fractions) is acted upon by a centrifugal force, which presses it against the walls of the cyclone chamber and, under the influence of gravity, it gradually settles in the tank.

Cyclone vacuum cleaner for workshop

The disadvantage of a cyclone vacuum cleaner is that in this way you can only collect dry garbage, but if there is water in the garbage, then there will be problems when sucking up such a substance.

The vacuum cleaner must be powerful enough, since in its normal mode of operation it is assumed that air is sucked through a standard hose. If an additional cyclone filter is used, an additional filter appears in the air path, and the total length of the air duct is more than doubled due to the additional air duct. Since the design is as maneuverable as a separate vacuum cleaner, the length of the last hose should be sufficient for comfortable work.

Features of choice

If it seems to you that making a chip ejector yourself will be difficult, you can choose from existing models. When choosing a vacuum cleaner for removing sawdust and shavings, it is first important to decide what type of dirt you will be removing. If you usually work on metal, then you will need to think about purchasing or even creating a powerful stationary device.

But as a carpentry vacuum cleaner that will remove wood dust and shavings, small mobile units with long flexible hoses are usually used. In a large number of cases, the designs of hand-held woodworking tools already have connections for connecting a suction hose with a standard size of 3.4 cm, and this exactly corresponds to the size of a household vacuum cleaner hose.

How to make a chip ejector with your own hands: drawing , principle of operation

A household vacuum cleaner is quite a convenient and even common tool for cleaning up the house. But if you use such a device to clean the garage, the result can be disastrous, as debris will remain on the floor and the vacuum cleaner will break.

The problem is that household vacuum cleaners are only designed to remove dust and very small debris. In the workshop, waste will consist of fairly large sawdust, wood chips, pebbles and metal/wood shavings.
