Rednasty January 18, 2018I'm not a wizard, I'm just learning. But I know everything about interior styles, comfortable home improvement and the transformation of Khrushchev’s apartments into luxury apartments. Hobbies: I like to give good advice.

From materials left over after construction or renovation work, you can create unique and unusual interior items. For example, you can build an interesting chair from square steel pipes.

To create it you will need:

  • steel square pipes;
  • wooden plank;
  • primer and putty for metal;
  • drill, grinder, hammer;
  • dye;
  • glue and wax for wood;
  • plastic plugs for chair legs;
  • welding;
  • screwdriver and spatula;
  • clamps;
  • sandpaper with different grain sizes;
  • jigsaw (if you want to make the chair seat round).

Advantages and disadvantages of chairs with a metal frame

Chairs with a metal frame have many positive qualities:

  1. Strength and durability. Such products can even last for several decades. In addition, due to their ability to withstand heavy loads, they are suitable for people with curvy figures or large body weight, and that is why they are most often installed in public places.
  2. Resistance to various external influences. Metal chairs withstand mechanical damage, high temperature, and excessive humidity. They rarely corrode, so the structures can be safely installed even in the garden.
  3. The structure can be easily repaired even at home. At any time it will be possible to replace a boring seat or even a backrest, while you can leave the same metal frame, painting it if necessary.
  4. Plastic. Metal can be given any shape, which does not affect its strength in any way. Therefore, there are dozens of design options for such furniture.

Chairs with a metal frame are easy to clean

The only drawback is the heavy weight of the structure, which can make it difficult to move around the room. However, for most people this feature is not a minus, so if you do not plan on frequent rearrangements, you can safely choose this option.

Important point! Not all structures are heavy - some frames are hollow inside, which means they are lightweight.

A frame made of hollow pipes will be lightweight

Another disadvantage of certain types of metal is the likelihood of corrosion; a protective coating will help prevent this problem. In addition, it is better if there are special attachments on the chair legs. Otherwise, the structure will damage the flooring.

Varieties

There are several main models of stools:

  • in the form of a chair, without a back;
  • with soft upholstery (a good option for the living room and kitchen);
  • folding - a country option or an away holiday;
  • compact, usually used as a stand;
  • for children, has small sizes for the convenience of the child.

In the photo of a stool made by yourself, you can clearly see the various product options, methods of their production and decoration.

Preparation

To work with metal profiles, you need a pipe bender. It is quite possible to make it yourself in your workshop. To do this, secure two strong wooden beams made of hardwood to the workbench. Leave a gap between the parts into which you will insert metal tubes. Fill them with sand, close both ends with wooden plugs, and only then proceed to give the blanks the desired shape.

Before work begins, detailed drawings must be made. Draw the chair the way you want it to be. Mark the dimensions of each part. Using this pattern, make a life-size stencil on plywood. This is what you will use to check the accuracy of the workpieces.

To work you will also need:

  • drill with metal drill bit;
  • bushings for fastenings;
  • screws;
  • upholstery;
  • sandpaper;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • primer and paint for metal.

Bar stool

In modern interiors you can increasingly find high stools on a metal frame. They are called bar chairs and may also have a low back and armrests. So if you have a bar counter, then such an attribute, and maybe even several, will come in handy. They will decorate the kitchen and fit perfectly into its interior.

To produce such furniture, you will need steel slats approximately 20-25 mm wide. You can experiment with sizes. You will also need metal scissors, a welding machine, a grinder or sandpaper, a ruler and a marker. To process the product, buy a primer and metal paint.

Manufacturing process

The work is performed in the following order:

Finished metal bar stool

  1. Make a stencil out of plywood to guide you.
  2. Cut strips from metal slats for the seat frame.
  3. Weld the strips to form the desired shape.
  4. Cut the slats into smaller strips to fit inside the frame. Bizarre geometric shapes won't hurt here. So feel free to use your imagination. Weld the parts.
  5. Sand the workpiece until it is smooth. Round the corners.

The stool seat is ready. Now you can start making the legs. To do this, take a square profile (3 cm) and cut out 2 parts of the required length from it. Determine the height of the chair yourself, based on the type of counter you have at home. The seat should be approximately 40 cm below the table top.

Lightly weld the finished legs to the frame. See if the structure will stand level, and only then finish the work. Such a chair should also have a footrest. Mark its location. The optimal distance is about 40-45 cm from the seat. Cut crossbars from a metal profile so long that they fit between the legs and weld them. Also sand the joints.

01. On a piece of flat asbestos sheet for welding, draw a shape with a pencil

02. According to the sketch, we cut out blanks from a 25 mm strip

03. We weld

04. Selecting the internal layout. Shredded from the same strip

05. We weld. We clean it up. We round the corners

06. The most important stage begins - welding the legs. Profile 30 by 20 mm

07. We grab the legs at one welding point and slowly move them apart to the desired positions

08. Mark the level of the footrest (the chair is still upside down)

09. Footrest also made of 30 by 20 mm profile

10. Making slanting cuts for the legs

11. Making wooden heels for the chair

12. Wooden plugs are held together solely by friction. Sand to size with legs

13. Let's start painting. First we prime

14. Paint everything below the seat black

15. Protect black parts from further staining

16. Paint the seat red

Finishing

To prevent the metal from damaging the floor covering, wooden or rubber plugs must be inserted into the profile. When the structure is completely ready, it needs to be finished. First, the product is completely coated with primer. This will protect it from corrosion. Then paint the chair. The color of the seat and legs may differ - it will be even more interesting. An exclusive and original product is ready. It will undoubtedly become a decoration in the kitchen.

What types of chairs are there with a metal frame?

Table No. 1. The most popular models of metal chairs.

View, illustrationDescription
In appearance, such models are not very different from wooden chairs. There are still four legs, a seat and a backrest. However, the structure will be more durable due to a reliable frame.
Since the metal has good ductility, various designs can be made from it. These can be any bent parts, rings, etc.
These are more massive products that are more comfortable. Such chairs have a soft seat (sometimes also a back), as well as armrests. Thanks to these features, the furniture looks more respectable, but it is worth considering that such chairs will take up more free space than standard options.
Bar stools can also have different appearances: · the simplest and most laconic product is a stool.
It will not be very comfortable to sit on it for several hours in a row, because there is no backrest. · A chair with a backrest is already comfortable. Its height may vary. · The most comfortable option is a bar chair with a high back. Typically, such chairs also have an additional footrest at the bottom.
Designers create all kinds of sketches for chairs, which are then made of metal, resulting in rather extravagant products. Due to the complexity of the structure and original design, the cost of such furniture is high, but the likelihood of encountering such furniture in someone else tends to zero.
