Dehumidifier for compressor from fire extinguisher

Principle of operation

A homemade compressor works according to a simple scheme:

  • An electrically powered or manual pump can be connected.
  • Air under pressure enters a sealed container (a receiver or cylinder is used).
  • The design includes an outlet valve that directs air through hoses to the spray gun, impact wrench, adapter for inflating tires, etc.

As auxiliary elements, a pressure gauge is used to control pressure and an automatic system for bleeding excess air. To prevent rapid wear of the device and ensure high-quality work results, filters are connected to the output line to protect against the penetration of oil and moisture.

DIY air filter for compressor

An air compressor is essential for every car owner.

Advantages and necessity of using a moisture separator

The use of this product when performing painting work ensures a long coating life and protection of metal surfaces from corrosion, but for this, the supplied air flow must be dry and free of foreign mechanical inclusions. This can be achieved using different types of filter units. Filtering units are manufactured under production conditions, and their operation guarantees high-quality air preparation. Along with all the positive aspects, high-quality factory filters are quite expensive.

That is why many craftsmen make such devices on their own. To do this, you can use propane containers, fire extinguisher cylinders and standard air filters.

Compressor from a fire extinguisher with a motor from a refrigerator

To create a homemade compressor, an OU-10 fire extinguisher or an equivalent is suitable.

The procedure is performed in stages, below are detailed instructions:

  • Clean the inside and outside of the cylinder from any remaining foam solution, dirt, rust and other contaminants.
  • Insert the adapter into the thread; installation must be done hermetically.
  • Fix a quad to the adapter, internal thread, size ¾ inch.
  • In the engine from the cooling installation, you should find the tip of the oil fill tube. Cut off the end with side cutters and replace the oil.
  • Pour the previous lubricant into a container with measuring marks to determine the amount of oil.
  • Using a syringe, introduce new oil into the electric motor, adding 10–12% when calculating the amount.
  • Plug the oil filler tube again, you can compress the ends or insert a bolt wrapped with fum tape.
  • Find a starting relay in the motor, which, together with the cylinder, should be installed in the frame of the future unit. It is better to use bolts as fasteners, but zip ties will also work.
  • Install a gasoline-type filter on the air intake pipe to clean the air received. Installing the filter involves installing a rubber adapter.
  • Attach a fuel filter from a diesel engine with a device for separating moisture to the outlet line from the supercharger with clamps. Without a filter element, drops of water and oil will get into the paint.
  • Connect a reducer to the line to maintain pressure inside the cylinder.
  • Behind the gearbox, the hose is attached to the quadruple.

  • The remaining inputs of the quad are equipped with a pressure gauge and a relay to control the pressure level.
  • To adjust the minimum and maximum pressure, a spring-type control relay is installed on the cylinder. Connect it with one wire to the engine, and the other side to the negative wire of the network. The positive wire is connected to the start button. For a high-quality connection, soldering and high-quality insulation are used.

Why is there high indoor humidity?

DIY compressor dehumidifierA hygrometer will help control humidity levels
. There are a huge number of reasons that lead to high humidity levels. The most common are:

  • improper organization of the ventilation system in the apartment, its clogging or complete absence;
  • lack of thermal insulation in the house or its installation does not meet construction requirements;
  • installation of sealed double-glazed windows, which leads to inadequate natural air exchange in the room;
  • improper organization of waterproofing in the house, especially for apartments on the ground floor;
  • performing repair work in the room;
  • installing an oversized bathtub or jacuzzi;
  • presence of a swimming pool in the house.

Compressor from a gas cylinder with a supercharger from a truck

An alternative way to make a compressor with your own hands is to use a 50 gas cylinder, an asynchronous motor and a compressor from the braking system in the ZIL-130. All elements are installed on the frame, but you can do without it and make a supporting element from a cylinder to which a pump, filter, electric motor, and equipment for operating control are attached.

You can make the simplest compressor unit with your own hands using a step-by-step guide:

  • Weld the fitting into the air supply line from the pumping unit to the receiver.
  • Attach the adapter for the output line from the receiver to the pneumatic tool.
  • Weld the fitting for mounting the pressure gauge.
  • Attach an adapter to connect the relief valve; it can be replaced with a relay. When the pressure rises to critical levels, the pressure will be released.
  • At the bottom of the cylinder, install a ball valve to drain condensate.
  • The pump and motor are fastened together using a drive belt, which is installed on the shaft pulleys.

  • Create an electrical installation system: a button to turn on and off, connect 2 capacitors with a capacity of 30 μF and a 60 μF starting element, a temporary relay and a magnetic starter.
  • Install a device to filter the air flow to the supply line.

The manufacture of a powerful automobile compressor for painting can be carried out according to various schemes. The main advantage of these methods is the availability of materials.

Advantages of cyclone type filters

Water separators greatly simplify the operation of an air gun and compressor. They ensure stable operation of the equipment. The following advantages of cyclone type filters can be highlighted:

  • simple design;
  • reasonable cost;
  • maximum efficiency;
  • retention of large condensate particles;
  • simple maintenance;
  • regeneration and complete restoration of original properties;
  • providing preliminary rough cleaning.

Dehumidifiers for compressors and air guns are an effective tool, without which it is impossible to imagine the operation of this equipment. They qualitatively prepare compressed air for further use. Filters separate primary moisture, oil particles, as well as contaminants of various fractions and other solid particles. Any pneumatic network must be equipped with a moisture separator that will clean the air for further use.

Making a 220 V electric air compressor with your own hands

Making a compressor with your own hands is easier than it seems at first glance. Let's look at the basic principles of how to make a compressor step by step.

Necessary materials

Properly preparing materials is half the job of assembling a compressor unit successfully completed. To create a classic device operating from a 220 V network you will need:

  • pressure gauge;
  • pressure control relay;
  • gearbox with built-in oil and moisture protection filter;
  • gasoline engine cleaning filter;
  • crosspiece for water with internal thread;
  • thread adapters;
  • clamps or ties;

  • engine;
  • receiver;
  • engine oil;
  • switch for working with voltage 220 V;
  • brass tubes;
  • hose made of oil-resistant material;
  • board;
  • medical syringe;
  • corrosion inhibitor;
  • washers, nuts and studs;
  • means for creating hermetic connections;
  • auto enamel;
  • file;
  • small wheels from toy cars or furniture;
  • motor filter from a diesel engine.

Assembling the engine

First, let's prepare the motor. Its role is to pump up air pressure. In order not to buy a special motor, you can use a motor from an old refrigerator.

The power unit contains a relay; it is useful for maintaining the selected pressure value in the system. Professionals note that Soviet refrigerators were equipped with more efficient motors; they are suitable for creating a compressor of greater power in comparison with imported products.

First of all, remove the motor from the refrigerator. To make it usable, the case will have to be cleaned. It is important to use a detergent that will prevent oxidation and corrosion. After cleaning the surface, the motor is suitable for painting.

Assembling a homemade compressor:

  • The motor contains 3 tubes: 1 sealed and 2 open for air circulation. Determination of the output and input channel is required: the easiest way to find out about the role of the tubes is to turn on the motor.
  • After external treatment, the oil must be changed. The best choice is a semi-synthetic product, which has the same characteristics as a motor product and contains various useful components. To replace it, a plugged tube is used, the end of which is cut off with a file. It is important to prevent sawdust from entering the system, therefore, after making a cut, you need to break the tube and introduce new oil with a syringe.
  • It is important to properly close the oil filling channel to prevent leakage. A screw with the appropriate cross-section is selected and fum tape is applied to it. A sealant will come in handy during this process. The bolt is screwed tightly into the pipe.
  • The motor and relay are mounted on a thick base board. The sensitivity of the relay requires maintaining the angle of the motor that was present in the refrigerator. Additionally, the engine is marked with the recommended position of the housing for stable and proper operation.

Compressed air reservoir

The air tank is an integral component of the compressor, without which the installation will not work. When choosing a tank, it is important to consider the amount of pressure that the cylinder can withstand (indicated on the body). An alternative option would be to use a receiver, old containers from a 10-liter fire extinguisher, since these containers are sealed and quite reliable.

DIY air filter for compressor

The air tank is an integral component of the compressor, without which the installation will not work.

The start valve is replaced with a threaded adapter, which is screwed onto the receiver. Creating a tight connection will ensure the use of fum tape.

If there are pockets of corrosion on the receiver, it must first be cleaned with sandpaper or a grinding machine. To remove rust from the inside, pour a special product into the container and mix thoroughly. Next, install a cross adapter of the plumbing type; it is mounted using sealant.

Assembling the device

Final assembly is carried out in stages:

  • The prepared receiver and motor are attached to a thick board. For fixation to the base, washers, nuts and studs are used. The location of the tank is strictly vertical. A reliable connection will be ensured by 3 sheets of plywood, on one of which a hole is cut for inserting a container. The remaining sheets are attached to the wood and plywood receiver retainer. From the floor side, furniture wheels are welded to the bottom for ease of movement.
  • A rubber hose is placed on the air capture tube, to which a cleaning filter from a gasoline engine is attached. Separate clamps for attaching the filter are not required, because the inlet pressure is low.
  • To prevent oil and water particles from entering the working composition, an oil and moisture separating filter from a diesel engine is installed on the outlet tube. Due to the relatively high pressure in the wire, it is recommended to use auxiliary fasteners; screw clamps are suitable.
  • A cleaning filter is installed at the inlet of the gearbox; it is required to create a decoupling and direct air movement. The connection is made with a plumbing cross on both sides. A pressure switch or pressure gauge is installed on the opposite side to monitor and regulate the pressure level in the receiver. An adjustment relay is installed on top of the cross. All elements are mounted hermetically.

Materials for assembling a homemade compressor

  • By means of regulating pressure, intermittent operation of the homemade structure is ensured. To adjust the relay, they act on 2 springs: one to set the maximum pressure, and the second to set the minimum.
  • The electrical circuit contact is connected to the supercharger, and the second is connected to the minus phase. The second wire is connected to the supercharger via a toggle switch and to the mains phase. The toggle switch acts as a start button to activate and deactivate the device without removing the plug. All contacts are connected by soldering and then insulated.
  • Painting of metal structures.

After creating the compressor, all that remains is to check its performance.

Testing and setting up a homemade compressor for painting cars

Having made a powerful compressor with your own hands, you should connect the spray gun to it.

Verification algorithm:

  • Set the toggle switch to the inactive position, connect the plug to the electrical circuit.
  • Initially set the relay to a low value and start the installation. Monitor work using pressure gauge readings. Now the user should make sure that the relay is working properly; it should open the circuit when the indicators are exceeded.
  • To check for leaks, use a soap solution to wet all connections.
  • Now the spray gun is turned on to release the air from the container. If the system is working properly, after the pressure drops the device should turn on.

If the device has passed all stages of testing, it is recommended to test the device in action by trying to paint a body element. The greatest attention is paid to the quality of the layer and composition, as well as stability of operation.

Recommendations

We recommend that you read these tips:

  • The tank must be cleaned inside and out, otherwise progressive corrosion will create a hole. Sandblasting is one of the most effective and simplest cleaning methods. You can create a sandblasting chamber with your own hands with relative ease.
  • Before work begins, the body elements are straightened. You can go the standard route and use a hammer, hoods, spotter and then paint the body, but the developed PDR technology helps eliminate damage without painting.
  • Be sure to paint with a spray gun after applying the primer. Acid primer for cars is extremely effective, but has features of operation and compatibility with other materials.
  • Before painting, all adjacent elements are either dismantled or covered, especially glass. If paint gets on glass, there is a risk of damage to the material during the removal process. A car glass repair kit will help restore glass from most damage. Car roof rails are difficult to dismantle; it is better to cover them with film and wrap them with tape.

Homemade cooler

Low air temperature allows moisture contained in the air flow directed to the compressor to collect (condense). Devices of this type are popular, especially among automotive repair specialists. The operation of a product of this type ensures a supply of air that meets all cleanliness requirements.

When making such a chamber with your own hands, you need to ensure a flow of air into the freezer. The main task that will need to be solved when manufacturing a cooler is to ensure the tightness of the refrigeration unit and make a fitting for removing moisture. For areas with cold climates, it is possible to supply air directly from the street. This move will allow you to obtain air with a low moisture concentration and, after minimal processing, send it to the compressor.

But you need to understand that producing a cooler with your own hands to purify the air is complex and entails considerable costs.

What is the device and what is it used for?

Refrigerated compressed air dryer

A refrigerated compressed air dryer (for example, KHD 31) is the most common industrial type of drying equipment. A refrigerated compressed air dryer works on the principle of reducing the temperature of the processed air flow using an evaporative freon heat exchanger. Cooling promotes condensation, thus removing moisture from the air flow. Condensate is removed by a drainage system.

refrigerated compressed air dryer

In front of the refrigerator, the air flow first reduces the temperature in the cooler (heat exchanger with fan convection of outside air). Then the separator (included with the cooler), using a centrifugal inertial flow, removes moisture. Only then does the air flow enter refrigeration-type compressed air dryers.

A refrigerated compressed air dryer operates at positive air temperatures. The average dew point is +3⁰ C.

Advantages:

  • Minimal loss of compressed air flow during drying.
  • Does not require regular maintenance.

Flaws:

  • Suitable only for equipment that does not require a high degree of air drying;
  • Cannot work with low temperature air flow.
  • Installed in heated industrial premises.

Advantage and importance of application

Moisture present in the air almost always has a detrimental effect on both the equipment and the processes that are carried out with its help. First of all, the compressor itself suffers, inside which the steam can partially turn into condensate, that is, liquid water. Water is known to promote the corrosion process.

The same can be said about all kinds of open pneumatic systems - for example, in trucks, into which the compressor periodically pumps air taken from the outside.

If a compressor is used to paint a car, then if there is moisture in the air, the coating will be of lower quality (so-called craters are formed), and the vehicle body may corrode.

By using a dehumidifier, it is possible to significantly dry the air entering the compressor, which means that all of the above phenomena can be avoided.

Device Description

By dehumidifier we mean a high quality filtration agent. It ensures optimal operating characteristics of the equipment, and also cleans the composition of the air environment that is released by the pneumatic system. Modern compressor models are often supplemented with a panel or oil filter, which thoroughly prepares the working mixture.

This is an important filtration stage for a pneumatic system that maintains oversized tools. Standard models of compressor dehumidifiers are more often used in automotive workshops, as well as on production lines where workers perform a large volume of paint and varnish operations.

As a result of thorough cleaning and reprocessing, the pneumatic system releases air that is free of moisture particles. Due to their properties, moisture separators are used for the proper operation and operation of sandblasting construction equipment.

The most common types of homemade dehumidifiers

Homemade moisture separators are made in the image and likeness of industrial ones. There are three types of such devices:

Cyclones

This type of dehumidifier has a cylindrical body in which the air is given a rotational movement. In this case, the steam contained in it is thrown back by centrifugal force to the walls, on which it settles in the form of condensate.

The dried air is discharged through the outlet pipe, which is located at the maximum possible distance from the inlet pipe.

DIY air filter for compressor

There is a drain valve to drain condensate.

Adsorbers

Some substances absorb water vapor like a sponge. To dry the air, it is enough to pass it through a chamber filled with such a substance (it is called a sorbent).

As the sorbent becomes saturated with moisture, it should be changed.

Coolers

We have already said above that the “solubility” of steam in air increases with increasing temperature of the latter. For example, at a temperature of 0 degrees, the air can contain up to 1 g of water vapor, while at +20 C it already contains about 20 g. This leads to a simple conclusion: in order to dry the air, it needs to be cooled. In this case, part of the steam will become excess and immediately turn into condensate.

A clear example of this process can be such phenomena as dew falling in the morning, water constantly dripping from a household air conditioner, or fogging up of a cold mirror after taking a shower. And household air dehumidifiers using this principle are no longer uncommon.

DIY air filter for compressor

Cooler and moisture separator - diagram

Removing moisture from the air by cooling it is a fairly energy-intensive process, so dehumidifiers of this type are less common than the first two. It should also be taken into account that refrigeration dryers do not clean the air of mechanical impurities, as cyclones and adsorbers do.

Factory-made moisture separators are usually combined. The cooling block or cyclone is the first stage in which rough cleaning is carried out, that is, the main part of the steam is removed. In a cyclone, air is swirled into a vortex using a rotating impeller with blades.

The adsorber acts as a second stage, which carries out fine cleaning. Thanks to the combined solution, the sorbent has to be changed much less frequently.

In the characteristics of industrial dehumidifiers, in addition to the amount of steam removed (indicated as a percentage), the size of dust particles retained by the device is also given.

Device drawing

In the homemade version of the cyclone, for the sake of simplicity, we will do without an impeller. Instead, we will supply air into the cylindrical body tangentially, due to which it will move in a vortex.

However, it must be taken into account that such a moisture separator, which does not have a forced swirler, will only work effectively when installed after the compressor. That is, it will not be able to protect the supercharger itself.

Why are dehumidifiers needed?

One of the main characteristics of compressed air quality is its humidity. Dryers are used as additional equipment that removes excess water. Helps to increase the operating efficiency of compressor units and save costs on their maintenance.

Attention! The use of dryers for compressors extends the repair-free period of their operation.

The devices are equipped with special tanks for collecting discharged condensate, which prevents corrosion in the condenser. Liquid droplets form when steam comes into contact with cooled surfaces. Industrially manufactured dehumidifiers operate automatically and are made from environmentally friendly materials and raw materials. Available in a wide range of models for different operating pressures. Under special conditions of air preparation, devices that utilize moisture from the air maintain the operation of compressor equipment at a high level.

The functions of the dehumidifier are aimed at preventing:

  • air pollution with harmful substances, incl. traces of oils;
  • rust formation;
  • pressure drop;
  • air passage;
  • formation of solid residue in the compressor flow system;;
  • deterioration of the commercial properties of the final product and defects;
  • failure of pneumatic systems and subsequent expensive repairs.

Making a dehumidifier with your own hands

Now let’s look in more detail at how to make a dehumidifier for a compressor with your own hands:

Cyclone

The cyclone body is a pipe welded on both sides. It should be noted that the air inside will be supplied under high pressure, so the walls of the housing must be thick enough. You can also take a gas cylinder or a fire extinguisher as a blank - they are designed for high pressure.

  • diameter: 100 – 110 mm;
  • height: 600 – 700 mm.

DIY air filter for compressor

Example of a finished device

Before starting work, the blank for the body must be treated from the inside with sandpaper - this is necessary for painting.

Manufacturing procedure:

  1. From below , at a distance of at least 120 mm from the bottom plug (the pipe will be installed vertically), a fitting must be welded into the wall of the housing through which air will be supplied. It is best to weld the fitting tangentially, but if this solution seems too complicated for you, simply weld it on the side.
  2. to the center of the plug covering the upper end. Some craftsmen weld it on the side, on the side opposite to the inlet pipe. With this design, the dehumidifier is also quite effective, since the air has time to dry during its journey along the body, but it would be more correct to place the outlet pipe in the center of the top plug (remember that the steam is thrown by centrifugal force directly to the walls).
  3. into the center of the bottom plug to drain condensate. If you decide to use a cylinder as a blank for the body, you need to turn it over - then the standard fitting will play the role of the drain hole.

It’s called “3 in 1 rust enamel primer”. After rolling the composition inside the device, it is drained, after which the dehumidifier is dried.

Adsorber

Silica gel, granules of which are made by drying supersaturated solutions of silicic acid salts, has good sorption properties. This sorbent is quite affordable and is sold both in pure form and as cat litter.

Different types of silica gel may differ in pore size, working surface area and the amount of water they are able to absorb (indicated as a percentage of the mass of the sorbent).

DIY air filter for compressor

The amount of silica gel is selected taking into account the productivity of the installation: for every 800 - 850 l/min, 1 kg of sorbent is required. For continuous operation, you will have to purchase a double volume: while the fresh portion is working, the already saturated portion will dry in the oven.

It makes sense to look for a type of silica gel that changes color when saturated with moisture - it is most convenient to work with.

You can use a water filter or a car oil filter as a container. Excess holes in the oil filter can be plugged using bolts mounted on sealant.

Water separator-cooler

However, it must be taken into account that this option is quite difficult to manufacture, since you will have to ensure the chamber is sealed, as well as cut into it a pipe for discharging condensate (it is important not to damage the evaporator surrounding the chamber).

Such a dehumidifier will not be able to withstand significant pressure, but it does not have to be installed after the compressor - it works effectively even when installed before the supercharger.

Even at the design stage of the heating system, the connection diagram for the solid fuel boiler should be thought out. There is a traditional strapping scheme.

How to insulate a brick house from the outside and with what – an overview of materials and types of insulation is presented in this publication.

In conclusion, we can say the following: homemade dehumidifiers, of course, are inferior to industrial ones, but they should not be underestimated.

The Internet describes cases where, using inexpensive Chinese moisture separators, it was not possible to achieve acceptable quality of painting, and after attaching a homemade moisture separator from a pipe to the compressor, this problem was solved.

What is the risk of foreign matter getting into the working part of the compressor?

  1. The mixing of moisture and oil residues results in an emulsion that can create blockages in the compressor channels through which air is supplied. The emulsion, by its composition, by definition, cannot meet the standards adopted for its use in industry, etc.
  2. When exposed to low temperatures, water entering the air supply ducts freezes, causing them to become clogged or damaged.
  3. Rust begins to form in the air supply channels, which sooner or later leads to air blockage.
  4. Moisture getting into a pneumatic tool leads to corrosion of parts and failure of the tool.
  5. The presence of moisture in the supplied air makes it impossible to create a high-quality surface coating.

Has anyone made an air filter for the compressor for incoming air?

This manual handling will reduce the likelihood of foreign parts getting into the compressor. Among the many materials that absorb moisture well, silica gel has excellent properties.

You can buy it in stores in its pure form or in the form of litter for pets. To calculate the volume of the required amount of this substance, you can use the following formula - for every liters of air per minute you will need about 1 kg of silica gel.

The air flow entering the compressor contains particles of water or oil. Their entry into the supercharger is extremely undesirable.

It would be optimal to use silica gel, which changes color when saturated with moisture. To restore its properties, simply dry the substance in the oven for several hours.

Low air temperature allows moisture contained in the air flow directed to the compressor to condense. The filter housing is from the same place or from a used car.. Unlike the quite worthy proposals above, it has a normalized coefficient of dirt slippage and a completely reasonable pressure drop, which certainly guarantees the life of the compressor, and performance will not suffer.

Compressor equipment comes in different types. Some supply clean air, while others supply polluted air.

Doktor77 wrote: I don’t understand what’s stopping you from taking a regular filter from a Zhiguli? Every internal combustion engine has an inlet filter. Where does moisture come from in compressor air?

Schematic diagram of the dryer device
The flow entering the installation itself contains a certain amount of liquid. During the compression process, it does not go anywhere. Therefore, the consumed air also carries moisture, penetrating in droplet form into all elements of the system. This is unacceptable, in particular, for painting work, as well as for the operation of medical devices. Liquid droplets also cause defects during sandblasting. The wear resistance of equipment decreases. Therefore, a compressor dryer is considered a necessary element of the pneumatic network.
