Bolts GOST 7798, GOST 7805, DIN 931, DIN 933 strength class 6.8

The strength of bolts refers to their property in terms of resistance to influences exerted by external factors. The standard designation of the strength class consists of two numbers separated by a dot, or a two-digit number, also followed by a number separated by a dot. A total of 11 classes are installed. The lowest strength is indicated as follows: 3.6, and the highest - 12.9. Between them, as the strength characteristics deteriorate, the following classes are located: 10.9, 9.8 and 8.8 (together with bolts 12.9 - these are high-strength products), 6.8, 6.6, 5.8 and 5.6 (fasteners of medium strength), 4.8, 4.6 (together with bolts of strength 3.6 their use is allowed to create light-load connections)

Design and Application

The bolt, characterized by strength class 6.8, manufactured in accordance with the requirements of GOSTs 7805, 7798 and DIN 933, 931 standards, is a cylindrical rod. It consists of a section with a thread and a segment with a smooth one. This may be followed by a small headrest, and the whole structure is completed by a hexagonal head.

The scope of application of bolts with strength class 6.8 are those objects for which the integrity of the formed connection is an important factor, even under significant vibration-type impacts and when the parts being fastened are significantly deformed. In particular, these are shipbuilding and railcar building, the mechanical engineering industry, as well as the nuclear industry.

STATE STANDARD OF THE USSR UNION

HEX HEAD BOLTS, ACCURACY CLASS V. GOST 7798-70

2. The design and dimensions of the bolts must correspond to those indicated in the drawing and in the table.
1, 2. (Changed edition, Amendment No. 2-6).
3. Thread - according to GOST 24705. Thread run-out and undercut - according to GOST 27148. Bolt ends - according to GOST 12414.
(Changed edition, Amendment No. 5).
3a.
The radius under the head is in accordance with GOST 24670. 36. Tolerances of dimensions, deviations in shape and location of surfaces and control methods not established by this standard are in accordance with GOST 1759.1. 3c. Allowable bolt surface defects and control methods are in accordance with GOST 1759.2. 3a - 3c. (Introduced additionally, Amendment No. 4).
4.
(Deleted, Amendment No. 4).
5. The head design options are determined by the manufacturer.
5a. It is allowed to produce bolts with a diameter of the smooth part of the rod d1 approximately equal to the average diameter of the thread. (Introduced additionally, Amendment No. 3).
5 B.
To apply markings, it is allowed to manufacture bolts of versions 1 and 2 with a hole on the end surface of the head with dimensions that do not reduce the strength of the head, while the depth of the hole should be no more than 0.4 k. (Introduced additionally, Amendment No. 5).
6. Technical requirements - according to GOST 1759.0.
7. (Deleted, Amendment No. 2).

Execution

The main difference between the provisions of GOST 7805 and GOST 7798 lies in the different accuracy classes of bolts produced according to their standards

  • The first standard establishes the technical characteristics of fasteners in accordance with the requirements of class “A” - this is increased accuracy.
  • The second GOST standardizes the parameters of bolts produced with normal accuracy, that is, class “B”.

Another difference is the thread diameters. In GOST 7798, the range of changes in this indicator is from M6 to M24. Standard 7805 additionally includes dimensional characteristics of bolts with thread diameters 5.0, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0 and 1.6

As for the possible designs of bolts of strength class 6.8, they are the same in both standards. There are 4 options in total.

In this design, the nominal diameter is equal to the diameter of the smooth section of the rod. A small protrusion may be formed under the head. This option is the most widely used.

The head dimensions are similar to the first version. A hole is drilled in the bottom of the rod. When using castle nuts in conjunction with cotter pins, this design solution eliminates the possibility of loosening the connection due to self-unscrewing of the bolt when exposed to vibration loads.

Two holes are made in the adjacent faces of the head, the axes of which are located at an acute angle relative to each other. There are two possible options for using them - this is the same cotter pin or sealing of the connection.

A hole is created on the outer plane of the head for marking the bolt. Taking into account the requirement not to reduce the strength of the fastener, the depth of this hole should not be more than 0.4k, where k is the sum of the heights of the head and the protrusion located under it.

Bolt GOST 7798: bolt m6, m8, m10, m12, m16, m20, m27, m30

GOST 7798-70 is the most famous and most widely used type of bolts. Main purpose: connecting various parts in mechanical engineering.

For their production, medium-carbon steel wire of increased manufacturing precision is used. The steel grades used are steel 10 kp, 20 kp, 10, 20, 35, 40Х, ЗОХР, 45, etc. Production is carried out by cold heading on special machines, followed by thread rolling. GOST 7798-70 - hex head bolts of accuracy class B with thread diameter from 6 to 48 mm (foreign analogues - DIN 933 and DIN 931). The standard fully complies with ST SEV 4728-84.

The design and dimensions are indicated in the drawings and tables:

Material of manufacture

The technology for producing bolts characterized by strength class 6.8 is the so-called.
volumetric stamping using upsetting presses. quality carbon structural steel, mainly grades St.35 and St.45, is used as raw material The following properties of this material contribute to this choice:

  • the value of the HB index (Brinell hardness) ranges from 181 to 238 units;
  • the yield strength is 480 MPa;
  • ultimate strength – 600 MPa.

The use of steels of other grades is allowed. Instead of

  • Article 35 – Article 30, Article 40 and Article 35g;
  • Art.45 – Art.50G2, Art.40X.

Specifications

Manufacturers of bolts with strength corresponding to class 6.8 must comply with the dimensions established by domestic standards. Since GOST 7805, from the point of view of dimensional characteristics, is an expanded version of GOST 7798, we present their values prescribed in the first of these regulatory documents.

Similarities and differences between DIN 931 and DIN933 standards

Standards DIN 931 and DIN 933 are the closest analogues of GOST 7805 and GOST 7798, respectively. However, there is one important aspect here. As you know, each domestic standard normalizes the production of bolts of only one precision level. So, the first of the above is valid for class “A” fasteners, and the second is for fasteners made with accuracy corresponding to class “B”. In German regulatory documents the situation in this regard is somewhat different.

  • The requirement to produce bolts with accuracy class “A” applies to products with threads up to M24 and a length not exceeding 150 mm.
  • The dimensional characteristics of such fasteners must meet the requirements of class “B” if their thread diameter is greater than M24 and their length exceeds 150 mm.

There are also differences in the limit values of the thread diameter. It was said above that GOST 7805 has more nomenclature items compared to GOST 7798 due to the addition of seven diameters, the size of which is less than 6 mm (minimum -1.6 mm). And the upper values of this indicator are identical – M48.

In German standards, everything looks exactly the opposite. That is, the minimum thread there is the same - M1.6, but the maximum is different. In DIN 931 it is M39, and in DIN 933 it is M52. Accordingly, all maximum values of other parameters, starting from the height of the head and ending with the holes in the rod, also differ.
