DIY bicycle, moped, go-kart, ATV from a chainsaw

The versatility of gasoline chainsaws is proven not only by their multitasking and functionality, but also by the abundance of useful homemade products that craftsmen have learned to make with their own hands. They save money on the purchase of expensive factory devices, for which most people simply do not have the money. But, as they say, the need for invention is acute. Therefore, when talking about chainsaws, many people imagine not only logging or pruning an orchard, but also winches, ice drills, boat motors, grinders, sawmills, which technically competent craftsmen have learned to adapt from everyone’s favorite gasoline-powered tool.

Moving equipment deserves no less attention - bicycles, mopeds, go-karts, ATVs and much more that can be assembled using a chain saw with a gasoline engine. We will talk about how and from what to recreate them and surprise others with an incredible motorized design in this article.

DIY motorbike from a chainsaw

Not every happy owner of a bicycle is delighted with the need to pedal and waste his energy. A motorized bicycle is more convenient and less expensive in terms of power.

Making a bicycle with a chainsaw motor with your own hands is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. For this you will need:

  • bike;
  • a saw with a gas engine power of at least 2000 W - this indicator will determine whether it can start moving. As practice shows, the engine power is 2 hp. It is enough for a motorbike to reach a speed of up to 40 km/h;
  • reservoir for the future fuel tank;
  • cable from an old bicycle;
  • a handle to allow you to adjust the throttle;
  • bolt ties, nuts and other small consumables for creating fasteners;
  • connecting elements for creating a connection between the wheels and the engine.

The process of installing a chainsaw engine on a bicycle is as follows:

  • we assemble the drive shaft - remove the rear wheel tire and install a tire with a diameter of up to 2.5 cm. This equipment will help to adjust the engine speed, and like a gearbox, reduce the number of revolutions;
  • We use electric welding to weld a stand from the corners - it will help install the engine from the chainsaw;
  • alteration of the clutch - you can use a centrifugal one from a factory saw, connecting it to the wheel;
  • we adapt the gas tank - it can be located next to the engine, or on the frame;
  • we attach the wire from the engine ignition system to one of the bicycle handles;
  • attach a cable from the carburetor to the gas handle so that throttle control is simple and quick;
  • We equip the motorbike with protective equipment: mirrors, a flashlight, and proceed to testing a homemade bicycle from a chainsaw.

As you can see, installing a chainsaw motor on a bicycle is not so difficult.

Motor and battery

These components are selected taking into account the capabilities and wishes of the young rider. There is no limit to imagination here - from the screwdriver motor to infinity. It is important that the installed electric motor makes it possible to develop the required speed - for children 5-8 km/h is enough, for older children it is interesting, naturally, the speed will be needed more. When choosing a battery, consider its capabilities. It should be installed in such a way that it would not be necessary to disassemble the ATV for recharging. You can use a battery from a donor scooter, uninterruptible power supply, or another suitable one.

When all the components are installed, take care of the aesthetic component - after all, for a child, the appearance of his vehicle is primarily important. You can use body kit elements from an old ATV or develop your own - it all depends on desire, financial capabilities and availability of free time.

How to make a moped from a chainsaw?

The youth dream of most of our fellow citizens was and remains a moped. It develops a higher speed and has a structure that is more advanced than the motorbike described above. Buying a ready-made moped is not a cheap pleasure. We will tell you how to make it from scrap materials.

For this you will need:

  • a motor from a working, powerful saw (in our version, this is the “Friendship” model);
  • 2 wheels from an old bicycle;
  • pipe with a diameter of 2 cm (metal);
  • cable;
  • bicycle sprockets; as well as forks;
  • old spare parts from a motorcycle - a ready-made fuel tank, a headlight, and, if desired, a seat, although this can also be made with your own hands;
  • steering part;
  • gas lever.

The process of creating a moped looks like this:

  • we cook the frame to which we connect the wheels from the bicycle, forks, as well as a gas tank and a lantern;
  • we adapt the motor - the composition of the installation will depend on the configuration of the frame;

  • screw on the gas tank and battery;
  • we check that the newly installed elements do not dangle;
  • We make a chain drive - it will allow the wheels to receive the torque of the motor and move. You can use a belt instead of a chain pulley. But we must not forget that its wear will be noticeably higher;
  • we set up the ignition system - we connect the battery and brake lever to it;
  • adjust the exhaust pipe.

The assembly process is complete: you can start testing the moped.

How to make a children's ATV with your own hands?

Decide on the appearance and design of your brainchild. In principle, you can assemble a children's electric ATV of any size and any complexity - everything will depend on your abilities and technical skills. You can stretch out the process over months, but if you want to please your child quickly, choose a simpler design; it can be modified as the child grows up.

You can take a donor model as the basis for a future ATV - for example, an old ATV or a children's car, or you can make the frame yourself. If you choose the second option, an accurate drawing is required. When making it, take into account the possibility of upgrading the ATV in the future - the frame should have a strong suspension. You can draw a drawing of the frame of a children's ATV yourself or take an idea from the Internet. When making your own ATV frame, pay special attention to the quality of the welding seams. The material for the frame is a square profile of 25x25 mm (or another size), as well as a ¾-inch pipe.

Do-it-yourself motor scooter from a chainsaw

An equally famous homemade product that the domestic “Kulibins” learned to make. To recreate it we will need:

  • a scooter designed to support the weight of the person who will operate it. It is desirable that it initially have a manual braking system. The pneumatic wheelbase of the scooter must be durable;
  • a chainsaw from which the engine is removed - medium and high-power models are suitable.

The process of assembling a scooter looks simplified compared to previous homemade products:

  • First, remove the motor base and secure it to the back of the scooter frame. Make sure that the motor and wheel sprockets match;
  • we attach a manual accelerator with ignition of the chain saw - this way the operator can control the moving process;
  • If necessary, the scooter is equipped with a brake pedal, but in most cases, the lever for manual control of the scooter is enough for its full operation.
  • testing a scooter made from a chainsaw - if it is working properly, the new motorized device is ready and can be used.

Frame and suspension

  • How to assemble a moped with your own hands from a chainsaw and available parts: let’s look into it in detail

The frame for a homemade device is usually made independently from scratch. You can use blanks from an old motorcycle as material for the frame. The pipes from which they are made are lightweight and have the necessary strength and flexibility. As a last resort, you can choose the material yourself. The main parameter here will be weight. Excessively thick tubes or profile will make the ATV very heavy and difficult to ride quickly and maneuverably.

For suspension, you can use shock absorbers with springs from the same motorcycles. The suspension itself is shaped like the letter “A” and is movably mounted on the frame. Shock absorbers and springs should be selected in such a way that they can withstand the weight of the future car and ensure a smooth ride with good control over bumps and holes.

Steering and wheels

The steering can be partially used for a motorcycle, with the addition of two-wheel drive. The drive is carried out by adding levers and ball joints to the design, which can be borrowed from a car. The main task of the steering is accurate and comfortable steering.

Wheels for an all-terrain vehicle are best used from a car, as they are wider and will improve the vehicle’s maneuverability. The diameter of the wheels must be calculated in such a way that the homemade ATV can develop sufficient speed and also have a harmonious appearance.

Body and electronics

To install attachments, a gasoline tank and controls, you can use a motorcycle frame, which is structurally connected to the ATV frame. Particular attention should be paid to the stability of the all-terrain vehicle, its appearance and the comfort of the driver’s seat.

Don’t forget about installing all the necessary lighting and external alarm devices on your homemade ATV. The headlights, taillights and turn signals can easily be used from the same bike that everything else came from.

Homemade children's ATV from a chainsaw

The last homemade product that we will look at will be dedicated to ATVs. In fact, to assemble an ATV you need similar materials as for a go-kart or tricycle:

  • engine from an old powerful and working chainsaw;
  • gearbox – increases engine thrust and takes over its operating speed;
  • ATV frame – it should be stronger and more stable;
  • the driver's seat is good if you have an old moped seat: a teenager will be more comfortable in it than in a bulky car seat;
  • wheels with rough tread, diameter of at least 34-35 cm each. This will improve the cross-country ability of the ATV and make it similar to an SUV.

If desired, the prefabricated structure of the ATV can be improved to perfection with shock absorbers: the maneuverability of the ATV will increase, and the operating stroke will become smoother.

Homemade vehicles are cheap, but not always reliable. They can only be used in strict compliance with all safety regulations.

Wheels

It’s better not to skimp on wheels and buy new ones right away - go-kart wheels or a set of wheels for a large garden wheelbarrow will do. For an older child, it is better to take wheels with a wide tread - they are perfect for off-road use. Don't spare money on stamped discs - at least on the simplest ones.

An excellent solution for a children's ATV is rear wheel drive from an electric motor through a ready-made or homemade gearbox. Consider also the steering system - this will allow the child to easily handle the ATV and increase its safety.

What engines are suitable for assembly?

To answer this question, you need to select in advance the type of equipment that the manufacturer wants to assemble.

There may be several options:

  • scooter is a small-sized homemade product. The heaviest part is the niche for the user’s feet. The remaining elements can be made of light steel or aluminum. Power units with a capacity of about 3 - 4.5 liters are best suited for assembling a scooter based on a chainsaw. With.;
  • Karting is a small device designed for high-speed movement on a flat asphalt or concrete surface. The estimated engine power for assembling a go-kart should be approximately 4 - 5 hp. With.;
  • A moped is a medium-sized vehicle based on a strong, stable frame. For the manufacture of a moped, motors from chainsaws with a power of 5 - 6 liters are suitable. With.;
  • An ATV is a relatively large vehicle that is assembled from fairly strong and heavy parts. To assemble an ATV, a chainsaw with a rated power of at least 6 liters is suitable. With.

Regardless of the equipment that the manufacturer wants to obtain, the homemade engine must be in fully working order. It is best to clean or completely replace all filters in its design in advance, as well as make carburetor and ignition adjustments.

Assembly principle

The first thing that attention is paid to is the design of the frame, which is made of pipe and on which the power unit will subsequently be placed. Then the tank, headlight and wheels are installed. If you are using old parts, you must first clean them of rust. This is especially true for seams. After the initial stage is completed, the frame is covered with several layers of paint. Be sure to dry each layer thoroughly to avoid corrosion. As a recommendation, it is best to use spray paint to avoid smudges. You can paint not only the frame, but also the wheels, after sealing the rims with masking tape.

After all the parts are dry, you can begin installing the chainsaw engine. Make sure that the motor is well installed and secured. Without a cooling system, such a bicycle motor will overheat after 30 minutes of operation, so it is advisable to make a water cooling system. The homemade device looks like this. 2 flexible tubes are connected to the plastic bottle. One is attached in the upper part for air intake, the other in the lower part and through it, using a drip system, water flows to the engine cylinder head. The result is simple homemade drip irrigation and effective cooling.

As an additional comfort for the driver, you can install fenders, since clods of dirt and water can get on the engine. The resulting unit is capable of speeds of up to 60 km/h.

Below is an approximate drawing that can be used to convert a bicycle into a moped.

Optional equipment

ATVs are used not only for pleasure trips, but also as a reliable, hardy assistant in the farmstead. They are used for transporting goods, crops, or used instead of a small tractor in the garden. And for these needs it is necessary to somehow place a lot of things on the ATV. If you need an ATV mainly for personal needs or going on a picnic, you can make a case for the ATV with your own hands, in which you can place the necessary things. But for a subsidiary farm, it is better to make a trailer for an ATV with your own hands. If you have already mastered assembling an ATV, then it will take you very little time to build a small trailer, but it will bring a lot of benefits.

An ATV is an excellent off-road solution. It is popular among fans of extreme recreation, fishermen, hunters and anyone who needs to get into places where a car cannot pass. This type of transport is easy to operate, has excellent maneuverability and is quite stable while driving.

Factory-made ATVs are quite expensive, so craftsmen choose the economical option: they make such machines themselves. Of course, this solution is not for everyone: you must not only have golden hands and the tools necessary for the job, but also have a good understanding of the structure of a car, motorcycle and the ATV itself.

If you have a persistent desire to make this miracle of technology yourself, you should start with planning. It is necessary to decide on the models on the basis of which the transport will be assembled, and draw up drawings for them. Be sure to think about what tools will be needed during the work process and make sure that they are in good condition. No matter how boring this activity may seem, nothing will come of it without prior preparation. If for some reason it is not possible to make a drawing yourself, you should find a ready-made version.

Next you will need the sources. From a technical point of view, an ATV is a cross between a car and a motorcycle. Accordingly, to make it you will need a motorcycle and a car. It is optimal to select domestic models on the secondary market; it will be inexpensive, but the quality is quite satisfactory for the construction of an ATV. It is better to use a small car like an Oka or Niva. Among motorcycles, the Ural is very popular for such purposes; you can take the IZH.

Technology

When the drawings are ready, the sources have been purchased, and the tools are waiting in the garage, you can begin making a homemade ATV. Ultimately, people’s lives and health depend on the quality of work, so we must take our time and do everything consistently.

First you need to select the engine and cooling system. Typically a motorcycle engine is used because it uses less gas and takes up less space, but a car engine can also be used. Since it can overheat in summer, it is better to take a model with air cooling, optimally forced (using a cooler).

The frame must be assembled so that the engine can be fixed on it. It will be located in front or behind - it doesn’t matter, the main thing is that it is securely fastened. There are two options here:

Chainsaw kart - assembly features

To assemble this homemade product, you will need to remove the handles, fuel tank, cutting parts, gear rack and built-in cable connecting the gas handle and the engine from the chainsaw used on the farm.

In the future, the operator will have to:

  1. Remake the standard chainsaw sprocket. To do this, it is necessary to carefully grind off all its teeth to arbitrary sizes, since the outer diameter of the part does not play a big role. A pre-ground Minsk star will need to be welded to the resulting workpiece;
  2. Organize a place to mount the power unit on the subframe. To do this, it is necessary to drill 2 small holes in the cooling casing, the diameter of each of which should be approximately 8 mm. They need to be drilled into standard holes, each with an initial diameter of 6 mm;
  3. Assemble a strong subframe that is as vibration-resistant as possible. To construct it, a 3-mm sheet of steel is suitable, to which you need to weld 2 corners with dimensions of 35 × 35 mm. In the corners you need to pre-drill holes with an exact diameter of 8.5 mm - they will be needed to permanently fix the power unit from the chainsaw. In the opposite part of the steel plate, it is necessary to vertically weld a metal corner with dimensions of 35x35 mm - it will be necessary for installing the gearbox used. In addition, you will need to install a 10×1.5 mm M nut on the plate to tension the chain;
  4. To install the gearbox, you will need to turn it over to the other side;
  5. Weld the guides to the back of the steel plate. They can be made in advance from halves of metal pipes measuring 30x2 mm;
  6. Install a steel plate with parts welded to it on the chassis taken from an old AKU 89 go-kart;
  7. Equip a homemade chainsaw with a seat, steering wheel and brake system. If during the assembly process it turns out that the muffler from the internal combustion engine is directed towards the driver, then it will need to be moved to the side, or extended using a piece of metal pipe.

The finished homemade product will be able to accelerate to 60–80 km/h, carrying one adult passenger on board.
