Chainsaw sawmill
This type of design is the easiest to manufacture, but it will also require special skills, tools and experience working with them.
This type involves installing the carriage on guides, but is not mandatory. You can use a flat wooden plank as guides, along which the carriage structure will slide easily. It allows you to remove the first layer evenly. The cutting plane on the log is used as subsequent guides.
Attention! The absence of a frame and carriage adds a number of difficulties. The master may have problems holding the log in one position
You cannot start work without proper fixation, as this can lead to injury.
The step-by-step process for making a carriage for a chainsaw will look like this:
- Let's make the base. To do this, we weld together a pipe measuring 25x25 mm.
- Perpendicular tubes, the size of which is 30x30 mm, are welded to the base on opposite sides. They are necessary for attaching the moving part that holds the saw and sets the thickness of the planks to be cut.
- Nuts are welded into the side parts of the guides. With their help, it will be possible to fix the moving parts at the desired height with bolts.
- We make the moving part. It consists of two pipes with a T-shaped end. The end of the pipes is made in the form of a vice, clamped with bolts and nuts. These clamps will hold the chainsaw blade. Pipe size – 25x25 mm.
- To prevent the saw chain from rubbing against metal parts, two metal plates of the required sizes are welded onto the internal parts of the vice. They completely depend on the thickness and width of the chainsaw blade.
- We assemble the carriage into a single structure, select the desired height and install the saw. The sawmill is ready for use.
The video below fully describes the carriage manufacturing process. In addition, the author of this device notes the main difficulties and some inaccuracies that he made during the assembly of the sawmill. This will allow you to avoid such mistakes and make the device for sawing logs more practical.
Bottom line! This carriage design is suitable for personal use and one-time sawing of wood. It is not suitable for commercial purposes.
Assembly instructions for a simple manual sawmill
One of the easiest and fastest ways to cut round timber into boards is to use a manual device for longitudinal horizontal cutting with a chainsaw to a constant thickness. Lightness, simplicity and economy are ensured due to the absence of a base on which the log is laid. In fact, this is a separate cutting part of factory machines, only it is driven by the muscular force of the operator, who guides the device along the trunk, sawing it. When sawing, it is enough to lift the log onto trestles or even just two beams at the edges.
Description of the chainsaw frame
The device contains a minimum number of parts. All of them are fastened by welding or screw-threaded connections:
- The bed is the base of the tool. It is to this that the chainsaw is attached. Made from steel sheet 5 - 8 mm thick.
- Guides are welded to the frame. They support the entire structure with adjustable cut thickness. For them, it is better to use two round tubes with a thickness of at least 3 mm.
- Busbar clamps - one clamp bar is welded to the frame, the other is connected to it with two bolts. By inserting the bar between the jaws of the clamps and tightening them, you can fix the saw set and reduce the load on the attachment of the bar to the chainsaw.
- The carriage is a unit that regulates the thickness of the board cut from the trunk. It consists of two strips with semicircular grooves for the diameter of the guide pipes. Tightened with bolts and nuts.
- The support platform is integral with the carriage and is attached by welding with gussets or brackets. It moves over the part being sawed off, preventing the blade from deviating from the specified trajectory. Equipped with a handle for easy holding.
Making the base
The bed is cut from a steel sheet. Its dimensions are 160 mm length and 220 width. The most convenient way to do this is with a plasma cutter, but if you don’t have one on the farm, then an ordinary grinder will do. The main thing is not to forget to chamfer the workpiece for beauty and safety. Holes are drilled in the plate for attaching the clamps and the saw itself. To hold the latter, you can make a slot with a grinder and then refine it with a file. This will allow you to make small offsets while adjusting the tire offset on the machine.
For the guides, you can use a regular half-inch water pipe. Maintaining a right angle, they are welded to the frame strictly vertically. It is better to scald the joints thoroughly, as this place experiences significant stress.
Saw and bar attachment points
In order for the saw to hold tightly with the frame in a single block, you need to modify the long nuts: weld washers to them, fix the bar with them, put a frame with a slot on top, and tighten two bolts through it.
Busbar clamps are made from steel profile 25 by 30 mm. The distance between the holes for the tie is 130 mm. A contact pad 55 mm long and about 8 - 10 mm thick is welded in the middle of each profile. Now, when tightening the bolts, the tire, as in a vice, will be clamped by the contact pads, and the distance between the clamps will be sufficient for free movement of even the thickest chain with wide teeth.
One of the clamps is welded to the edge of the frame between the guides with the contact pad facing up.
Welding the carriage and support platform
The carriage runs along guides, allowing you to change the thickness of the board being cut. The easiest way to make it is from round and square pipes. Having secured the guides in a vice at the required distance (carriage width 240 mm), half of a pipe about 10 cm long, cut along the length, is placed on top. Grooves are cut out in the profile pipe, then it is placed across the guides and welded to the sawn halves. The operation with the strike plate is identical. Afterwards, all that remains is to drill holes that would tighten the halves of the carriage around the guides, fixing the support platform.
The part sliding over the log has dimensions of 400 by 500 mm. Having cut a thin profile pipe with a square section, weld a frame with two cross members. After cooling, the metal is polished with a grinder. For ease of holding, the tube can also be made from a water pipe. At the bend site, the metal is heated with a blowtorch or propane cutter, after which it is clamped in a vice and pulled according to the template. There is no particular point in hardening the metal - it is enough to simply release it in the air. The tube is welded at both ends to the contact pad.
When connecting the carriage to the contact pad, it is necessary to strengthen the seam with stiffening corners.
Once all the parts are ready, the entire frame is assembled with the chainsaw equipped with fuel and oil.
DIY chainsaw carriage. Blueprints
Since the price of professionally produced equipment (similar to that described in the previous section) ranges from 2500 to 3000 US dollars, it is not difficult to come to the conclusion that you can make your own carriage design for longitudinal sawing of timber.
Depending on the size of the chainsaws used, the dimensions of the carriage assembly, as well as its appearance, are shown in the figure.
The manufacture and assembly of a carriage for a chainsaw is carried out in the following sequence. First, the drive motor is prepared for installation. To do this, remove the drive pulley and install the engagement clutch, resulting in a finished cutting head. A support bracket must be made for the motor mounting plate. By changing the diameter of the pulley, you can control the cutting speed of timber - up to 2.5 times faster than allowed by the base engine speed. To reduce the temperature and eliminate the possibility of engine jamming, its output shaft is ground so that the chain drive sprocket, without taking into account the dimensions of the central bearing, fits tightly to the bracket.
The presence of a belt drive on the shaft that drives the chain protects the engine from vibration and shock generated by the chain. All that remains is to adjust the gearing to get the correct chain speed. Then it is necessary to install bearings on the drive shaft for more intense operating conditions, with increased load-bearing capacity.
Most home renovation and construction work requires the availability of the necessary materials. Buying boards or timber of the right size is not a problem, but sometimes you need lumber of a certain size. Planks of one or another type of wood, non-standard thickness or width are often required. Finally, there are simply several logs from which to cut boards. It is possible to solve such problems; you only need a DIY chainsaw carriage.
A device for cutting logs into boards with a chainsaw.
This simple device allows you to make a carriage, timber or boards of the required thickness from logs of any type. This device is especially valuable because it makes it possible to process non-standard logs - short, uneven or strongly curved. Let's take a closer look at this issue.
Design features of a homemade carriage
The carriage for a chainsaw is straight and even guides along which the tool is fed to the material being processed. To obtain a straight cut with the specified parameters, the saw is rigidly fixed on a movable platform, which, in fact, is called a carriage. The most common kit contents include:
- guides _ Their role is usually performed by rails, channels, I-beams. A good solution to the problem is to use a duralumin ladder;
- carriage , which is a type of cart that moves along guides. It has a grip or support platform for fixing the chainsaw. There are designs in which only the frame is rigidly fixed, and the engine itself only rests on a special stand;
- device for adjusting the thickness of lumber . Changes the lifting height of the cutting body of the chainsaw, which allows you to quickly and accurately set the desired sawing thickness;
- trolley feed motor . This element is not required, since large amounts of work are not performed on such devices. In addition, mechanized feeding requires the installation of limit switches and other control equipment. However, many users prefer to install a mechanism to obtain an even sawing pattern, which improves the quality of the boards.
Figure 1 - Homemade carriage for a chainsaw
There are also simpler carriage designs, which consist of a rigidly fixed chainsaw and a bounding frame. The material is fed to a moving chain, and the frame calibrates the thickness of the resulting board. This type of carriage is rarely used, since it is extremely difficult to feed heavy logs manually, and the results obtained do not have a smooth and straight surface. The best option is to feed the tool onto a fixed log.
Important! When using this method, a lot of space is not required - the length of the carriage guides should only slightly exceed the size of the workpiece.
Chainsaw Attachment for Metal Cutting
Attachments for chainsaws (suspended equipment): motor drill, compressor, wood cutter
Modern chainsaws can do more than just cut wood. This is a universal device that can be adapted to perform a wide range of tasks. If desired, an ordinary chainsaw can be used as a pump, motor drill, boat or bicycle motor.
In terms of the breadth of capabilities, no other tool can compete with them now. With additional equipment, the saw can pump water from wells or wells, cut stone, metal, and stretch cars stuck in snow or mud. All this becomes possible thanks to suspended equipment. Chainsaw attachments can significantly expand the functionality of this tool.
Chainsaw sawmill - option
To make the structure, in addition to a chainsaw, you will need:
- two channels 8 meters long and 140-180 millimeters high;
- two rails;
- corners 50x100 mm and 40x40 mm;
- 25 cm sections of water pipe as ties;
- steel plate 4-6 cm thick and 60 cm long;
- movable hoses;
- pipes with a diameter of 35-40 mm.
Making your own sawmill should begin with assembling the base from rails and 50x100 mm corners turned upside down. They must be installed strictly parallel to the floor, so you need to use a building level.
- Along the length of the base, according to the drawing, holes are drilled in increments of 1-1.5 meters and with a diameter of 14-16 mm.
- Then, according to the number of holes, ties are taken and connected with bolts.
- Stands are made from metal squares and the base is placed on them. The distance between the outer posts and the base should be about 100 cm.
- To make the structure more rigid, braces between the posts can be welded.
After the base is completed and installed, you need to make a movable cart with your own hands. To do this, a 40x40 mm corner is welded to the bottom of the steel plate and the product is placed on rollers or bearings. Two corners are welded on top of the plate, to which a chainsaw .
At the last stage of the work on making a homemade sawmill, it is necessary to make a structure for fixing the logs. To do this, movable hoses and pipes should be positioned at the required height and secured.
The first version of a homemade sawmill using a chainsaw is ready. There is another way to make a wood processing unit with your own hands. The tools and drawing for it will need the same, however, the design itself is more refined.
Varieties of homemade chainsaw sawmills
There are so many inventions, so many people, so we’ll take a sightseeing tour of different types of homemade sawmills, and find out the features of their design and application.
The first version of the device, which is shown in the photo, is suitable for cases when it is necessary to cut not one or two logs, but several dozen. The convenience of using such a unit is that the workpiece is placed on the base, fixed, and after that the cutting tool moves along the rail track. A special arch-shaped structure on which the tool is mounted moves along rails. To set the cutting thickness of the boards, the arch design provides for adjustment of the position of the tool.
This is interesting!
It is difficult and expensive to make a structure with a base on which a frame with a chainsaw moves, so it makes sense to bother with it if you plan to take up the sawmill seriously.
Simplified version of the first option. The simplicity of manufacturing this model lies in the fact that instead of channels, a steel angle is used, from which the base is made. A manufactured arch moves along the inside of the corner, on which the tool is fixed. The corners are connected by longitudinal plates on which the workpiece is located. A simplified version of a stationary sawmill made from a chainsaw allows you to not only quickly make it yourself, but also save on materials.
The third option for a stationary sawmill can also be made independently at home, but this will require a lot of consumables. The principle of operation of such a unit is that the gas-powered tool is fixed on a special movable frame. The bed is mixed manually by a sawyer along the outer part of the channel. To set the required thickness of the boards to be cut, the channel is raised or lowered thanks to a special mechanism.
Device for longitudinal cutting of logs
Longitudinal sawing of logs is carried out using a special device. It consists of the following components:
- an adapter that is fixed on the tire in the base area;
- guide, the main task of which is to transmit linear motion to the main component.
READ No Lubrication on Stihl Chainsaw
The last component was attached to the board on the log that the operator was going to saw.
This kind of device , as we have already found out, having examined its design features, guarantees straight-line movement of the guide bar, which ensures the accuracy of the longitudinal cut.
- sawing a log into two parts;
- sawing material into quarters;
- cut a beam from a log that will be used for construction work (it will look neat, so the masonry slopes look good);
- split the logs into several beams or boards.
Please note that if you have set yourself the task of cutting into logs and beams, you will have to change the position of the board many times. In addition, good dexterity is useful for precise cutting. At first, the loose end of the guide bar will move sideways. This will not allow achieving consistency of performance and exact parallelism of each side of the board or beams.
Carriage for longitudinal cutting of logs
A device similar in design can be used to cut material in a horizontal position if necessary. If we carry out a comparative characteristic, then the device for cutting vertically allows us to obtain wooden elements of equal thickness at the output, which makes it possible to characterize this attachment as accurate and functional.
Second adaptation option
The main design features of this device:
- fixed on the guide of the saw set not in one place, but in two, at the tip, as well as at the beginning (the structural type is frame, which ensures maximum strength);
- the fastening area can shift, it all depends on your needs along the guide, which makes it possible to set the desired width relative to the size of the log;
- the component (guide) of the device can be located at any distance in relation to the tire, which also allows you to focus your work on the required dimensions of boards and beams (primarily thickness).
How to work with such a device? Simply and easily:
- We make the first cut in a horizontal plane using a guide, a structural part of the frame installed on the log;
- the second and further cuts are made, focusing on another main surface, which usually serves as the flat surface of the previous move.
Important! To prevent the saw from becoming jammed during operation of the power unit and the device for longitudinal cutting, spacers are inserted into the cut to prevent the sawed area from narrowing.
What to do if the operator needs to cut a log whose diameter is larger than the saw guide installed on the tool? Then you need a complex chainsaw attachment for longitudinal cutting. Please note that in this case, even the rated engine speed will not allow the lubrication system to release enough oil to ensure that the entire chain is lubricated evenly.
To improve the quality of lubrication and avoid rapid wear of the bar, sprocket and saw element, more consumables are supplied to the end of the guide from an additional system (can be made from a hose and a reservoir). To ensure that the oil is supplied by gravity, the reservoir is mounted at an elevation relative to the guide.
Universal device for longitudinal spreading
The universal device Big Mill allows you to accurately cut logs, even those whose diameter reaches 500 millimeters. In this case, the exact thickness of the boards can be set based on a special ruler, which the operator will find on the device stand (applied directly to it). Many craftsmen create their own devices, focusing on the model of this type of universal attachment.
How to unravel a log lengthwise using a universal device? Follow this algorithm of actions.
- We take a couple of even boards, connect them, forming a T-shaped structure with an angle of 90 degrees. This design will act as a ruler, allowing the tool to move smoothly. In this case, the docks need to be twisted in such a way (taking into account the dimensions of the device for longitudinal release) that the power unit does not touch the ruler (it should be placed at a distance of 10 millimeters above).
- Creates a pair of stops, which are ready-made from two parts (L-shaped). These components will prevent the log from rotating when it is cut. For reliability, the boards are secured with metal corners.
- Rolls the log onto the stops (it is easier to roll those whose diameter is relatively small). If you need to install a large log on supports, you will need to ask someone for help.
- We connect the ends of the log and the stops using self-tapping screws (take those that are longer than the rest). You should not use nails, since the second longitudinal cut will require you to rebuild the entire structure.
- The T-shaped structure, which acts as a ruler, is attached to the stops with clamps.
- The ruler is connected to a chainsaw, on which a universal device has already been installed.
- Now we adjust the thickness of the boards that you want to get in the end. When setting this parameter, do not forget about the thickness of the saw and the gap between the T-shaped structure and the blade (10 millimeters).
- We turn the material for cutting away from ourselves by 30 (this will make cutting longitudinally much easier).
- We make a cut lengthwise.
- He removes the ruler, unscrews the clamps, and removes the stops at the ends.
- We place the T-shaped structure on the plane that we got after the first cut, secure the guide element with self-tapping screws.
- We fix the log as securely as possible in order to make an accurate second cut in the horizontal plane. It will run perpendicular to the first cut.
This method can be used for the third and fourth cuts (each time, re-setting the ruler) to obtain a square loaf at the end.
If your task is to saw a log into boards, then after the second horizontal cut we no longer use a ruler, performing all manipulations only with the help of a universal device. We will use one plane as a guide. As a result, the operator will receive a semi-edged board.
Tips for developing a homemade jig
Craftsmen know that any profile that has such characteristics as:
- high structural rigidity;
- light weight.
Available materials that meet such requirements are aluminum and duralumin. The best option is devices made from levels (aluminum) and plaster rules (this element served as a guide). The plaster rules are aluminum parts, although you can safely use another lightweight profile down to the boards and stairs (it’s good if it’s also aluminum). An alternative, of course, can be an iron element, but then the nozzle will be heavy and inconvenient to use (it will cause a lot of inconvenience during prolonged use).
Taking into account the friction force during operation of the power unit, care must be taken to increase the productivity of the tool. To do this, it is recommended to use aluminum rollers to serve as your base. Another good option is to use plastic (the main thing is that it is elastic), which must be fixed to the base of the nozzle with bolts.
Drilling a chainsaw bar
Mark the location where the hole should be and drill the tire.
Design of various attachments for longitudinal sawing of logs
Let's start with something simple, with the design of a gas cutter. Visually, it resembles a bearing assembly, complemented by a pulley and a movable shaft (performs rotational movements). This device is driven by a belt drive. The unit is equipped with a special mechanism designed to fix the disks. The latter must be selected from an assortment designed for cutting metal, wood, and stones. With the help of such discs and attachments, transforming a gasoline saw into a multi-tool is not difficult.
An alternative version of the device for longitudinal cutting is a debarker. This is popular not only because of its ability to increase the efficiency of making boards, but also due to its ability to remove bark from logs. In addition, it can be used to cut grooves in the material being processed. These are just a few examples of the purpose for which a debarker is used. Such nozzles are found in two varieties:
- drums;
- disk.
They differ from each other mainly in functionality.
There are other devices for longitudinal cutting of logs. Most of them are developed by large companies, but you can also see homemade devices on the Internet. They differ from those manufactured at factories of famous brands mainly in their design features.
In this regard, homemade nozzles are much simpler. The most common version of these is a manual sawmill. The basis of such a small sawmill is a gasoline chain saw, supplemented not only with guide elements, but also with wheels designed for moving along the log (in order to reduce the resistance indicator). This device has no more than 2 wheels, one on each side of the workpiece.
A manual sawmill is a simple and convenient device. With its help, you can produce a large number of smooth and neat boards without much effort. The only essential condition is the correct installation of the chainsaw. It should be positioned horizontally (unless the operator requires an oblique cut).
Cutting technology
To cut a log into boards, it is not enough to use one attachment frame. An additional support will be required. You can’t do without it, especially in cases where you need to cut down the upper part of the material, the one that is close to the bark. In other words, a stop is needed to turn a log into a beam. The necessary device is usually made from boards in the amount of 2 pieces.
Each board must be at least 40 mm thick, but not more than 50 mm. They are fastened together by first placing both in a perpendicular plane. Afterwards, the boards are fixed to the log using self-tapping screws. Stops need to be placed on the sides, which requires the same devices made from boards.
Much attention is paid to the fastening procedure
It is extremely important that the top end of the vertical board is in relation to the top edge of the log below. The distance between these two points should correspond to the thickness of the piece of material being cut
Upon completion of the preparatory stage, the chainsaw is installed directly. Part (only one) of its frame should rest against a board installed across it. It will then be obvious to the operator why the installed plank fixtures are called supports. The base of the frame literally rests on it, on its vertical part.
After that, just start the tool and start making longitudinal cuts, focusing on the gap between the end of the vertical board and the upper edges of the log. An important point is that you don’t need to put a lot of pressure on the gasoline saw with your hands. There is no need to push the device; the cut will be smooth and precise. Upon completion, it is enough to dismantle the device from the boards. After this, the log is turned over (90 degrees), and the supports are reinstalled in the same way as described above.
If we are talking about cutting logs into regular boards, you can do without a wooden stop. But when cutting slabs, it is necessary to install it. Once the material has been converted into timber, the plank fixture can be set aside. By “timber” we mean lumber with a rectangular cross-section (with 4 smooth outer surfaces, which themselves will serve as a support for a gasoline chain saw with an attachment). The technology for working with such a tool (with frame) is simple:
- The frame is pressed against one rectangular section.
- The operating device is advanced along the workpiece, thereby cutting the timber.
In order to change the thickness of the board being cut, it is enough to use a stop element placed perpendicular to the entire structure (it is simply moved across the cut).
Longitudinal sawing device
Sometimes during the construction or repair of wooden structures, sawing of wood is required. It is expensive to purchase such equipment for home work, so you can assemble it yourself. A device for longitudinal sawing of logs with a chainsaw will help prepare a large number of boards and lumber.
Before you begin assembling the tool, you need to prepare drawings and carefully study them. The entire structure consists of a simple frame and guide. To ensure an even cut, the guide is fixed on both sides of the base. Manufacturing process:
- The frame is made from a square pipe. Cross section - 20x20 mm. You can use a simple children's desk.
- The size of the clamping part should be from 50 to 60 cm. It is positioned so that the end of each part forms the basis for the next mechanical unit (cross member). To ensure that the crossbar holds securely, it is welded to the structure.
- To install the bolt ties, holes are made in the cross member with an electric drill. To secure the tire, a small protrusion is left at the center point of the cross member.
- Such fastenings are installed in the upper part of the structure. In this case, the width of the bolt clamps must be greater than the height of the tire.
- The supporting frame (10 cm wider than the length) is made rectangular. Holes for the nuts are made on both sides, 2 pieces of 10 cm each are attached perpendicularly. The nuts are welded to the support frame using a welding machine.
- To facilitate longitudinal sawing of logs with a chainsaw, the structure is equipped with handles. To do this, a pre-bent metal part is welded to it.
- Then all the finished parts of the structure are assembled together. To do this, clamps and a chainsaw bar are inserted into the groin parts. How wide the workpieces will be depends on the gap between the sidewall of the frame and the tire. Therefore, it is important to secure the chainsaw bar correctly.
To increase the speed and quality of sawing, a chain for longitudinal cutting of products is installed on a chainsaw for longitudinal sawing.
boat motor
A device in the form of a motor is often used by fishermen. This is a compact device that easily fits in the trunk of a car and is capable of high speed movement. They are equipped with rubber boats with transoms up to 380 mm high. Specifications:
- weight - 8 kg;
- fuel consumption - 1 l/h;
- travel speed - up to 20 km/h;
- gearbox - 2:1 (gear ratio);
- propeller with 3 blades - 15 cm in diameter.
The disadvantage is high noise. The device is equipped with fasteners and operating instructions. The instructions also indicate how to properly install the outboard motor on the chainsaw.
Wood splitter
The wood splitter is designed for splitting thick logs. The attachment has a cone shape and is installed on the saw. The conical end of the device is screwed into the log, after which it splits. This is a multifunctional model that is suitable for all types of chainsaws. You can purchase the product at points selling petrol tools or on websites. The cost of the device varies within 1000 rubles. Instructions for installation and operation of the wood splitter are included in the kit.

How to create a lawn mower using improvised materials
To quickly deal with tall grass or tidy up the lawn, a lawn mower must be among the owner’s tools. You can purchase an ordinary factory version of the equipment, which is convenient to use, but you should keep in mind that the price of the lawn mower will be significant. A homemade “Friendship” chainsaw made by yourself will cost one and a half times less than a factory device, and the power is quite enough for standard household use.
Regardless of the type of design chosen, the trimmer will consist of a drive, frame, control system and knives. For ease of operation, the device is additionally equipped with wheels, legs, handles and a protective casing in which the mowed grass is collected. The process of making a lawn mower begins with creating a frame of a convenient size, most often made of metal corners. The optimal size is 25x25 cm. In general, the progress of work on the manufacture of equipment looks like this:
- Using bolts, iron handles are attached to the finished frame, and wheels are mounted on the side parts.
- Having previously studied the characteristics of the Ural chainsaw or any other model, remove the handle and tire from the device.
- Using studs and nuts, the remaining part of the equipment is attached to the base. This must be done so that the gearbox shaft, rotated 90˚, looks down.
- At the next stage, you will need to lengthen the gas cable, and use two tubes to make a sliding shaft connected to the gearbox.
A lawn mower made from a chainsaw will cost much less than a store-bought one.
Helpful advice! Some people make their own lawn mower blades, for example from parts from a handsaw. It is much easier to purchase a finished product, which is then connected to the shaft using bolts or a welding machine.
Elements from old baby strollers or wheelbarrows are used as wheels. If you use several pipes of different diameters for manufacturing, you will be able to make a device with a telescopic operating system that can change the length.
This is especially important if the device is often used by people of different sizes. Also, creating a telescopic shaft will help regulate the height of the grass after the lawn mower passes. To ensure that the device lasts longer, does not fail after encountering hard stones, and effectively fights small bushes, it should be equipped with high-quality steel knives. For convenient use, it is recommended to additionally equip the mower with a grass catcher so that you do not have to collect the remains of the mown grass.
We take a log and get boards from it!
Impeccably even cutting is obtained by using a leading ruler (a special guide is often used instead), which is usually called a straight template. It is, in fact, a small machine recommended for cases where woodworking is done more or less regularly. Such a miniature sawmill for longitudinal sawing has If you use it “once every hundred years,” it is better to make do with a homemade device, which was described above.
A miniature sawmill is required for those who work with wood regularly
Both the factory device and the DIY design cut logs according to the same pattern. Longitudinal cutting is carried out using a special chain. Finding her can be difficult. But there is a way out. Sawing trunks lengthwise can be done with a regular chain. You just need to carefully sharpen it at a 10-degree angle. Important point! The tool quickly loses its original sharpness during use. Therefore, it must be constantly sharpened so that cutting logs into boards does not cause difficulties, and the geometry of the resulting products meets the stated requirements.
Sawing logs into flat boards with a chainsaw equipped with a device is performed as follows:
- Take two straight and strong boards. Connect them at right angles to each other. The result is a reliable straight template.
- You make the simplest supports from wooden blocks. Use them to support the template you made.
- Place the barrel on the device.
- Fasten the frame to the rail, attach the supporting elements supporting the leading ruler to the ends of the log. The last operation requires horizontal installation. Use a building level for control.
- Secure all existing elements with self-tapping screws. Some craftsmen use nails for these purposes, which is undesirable. After cutting the logs into boards, you will have to remove the used fasteners. It will be difficult to do this without significant damage to the structure.
- Fix the template to the supports and adjust its height. Nuance. The cut will go somewhere 10 mm above the level of the ruler, and not strictly along it. Take this into account when adjusting the height.
- Turn the log. Turn on the chainsaw. You make the first cut.
Then you need to free the log from the stops and boards, fix the template on the cut surface so that it faces in the direction of the second cut. The ruler can be attached with supports to the ends or directly to the surface of the barrel. Make a second cut. In relation to the first, it will be perpendicular.
Next, turn the log and fix it. The ruler can be removed. further sawing without it - one of the cut sides of the trunk will serve as a guide. You need to adjust the thickness of the cut on the frame, saw off the log to get a beam with bark on only one side. Now turn the barrel again. Set up the frame. You carry out the final sawing and get the boards at your disposal. If their width is not important to you, there is no need to cut the trunk to fit the timber. Simply saw the workpiece to the middle, turn it 180°, then continue the operation you started.
How to cut a log with your own hands
It is not necessary to purchase a device for sawing boards with a chainsaw. You can make it yourself. The simplest option is a device made of metal profiles. Such a nozzle will not only be convenient, but also stable, durable, and reliable. Are you planning to make the most functional frame possible? Use mechanical gearboxes.
With them, the device will turn into a kind of machine for longitudinal cutting of logs. Mechanical gearboxes are necessary to simplify the process of moving the chainsaw along the trunk. There is no need to exert force (pressure on the tool manually) to process the material. All you need to do is turn the gear handle. As for adjusting the thickness of the boards, it is convenient to adjust this indicator by using an attachment made of metal profiles, lifting the workpiece itself, and not moving the gasoline saw in relation to it.
At home, you can also make a device that will cut a log not in a horizontal, but in a vertical plane. The only significant nuance is that it is more difficult to work with compared to the previous frame (despite the fact that its design is simpler).
The difficulty lies in the fact that the operator has to put effort into moving the tool along the workpiece. In addition to the chainsaw and attachment, you will have to use an addition made of boards and metal. This kind of support is attached to a log.
An alternative option is a carriage installation. To create such a frame structure, you will need a pair of wheels and a profile pipe. This device differs from others in its mobility (ease of movement along the workpiece). In addition, the wheels will simultaneously serve as stops for the chainsaw, which means that additional devices will not be needed. The only thing that is needed in addition to these parts and a profile pipe is an aluminum ladder (it will play the role of a guide element).
You need to select a ladder taking into account its width, which should coincide with the distance between the wheels of the frame structure, which will be placed directly at its ends. The best option is to attach it to the log being cut using self-tapping screws, clamps or nails. The created device for cutting boards with a chainsaw with your own hands is placed horizontally.
It should lie as flat as possible. You can make sure that it is placed correctly using a building level. It’s easy to level a ladder with a log, using boards (pieces) of different thicknesses. As for the tool itself with the nozzle, it is installed on the ladder, moving the working saw along the workpiece, applying pressure on it with your hands.
Chainsaw - a universal summer resident tool
Chainsaw , often also called a chainsaw, is a chain hand tool equipped with a two-stroke (in most cases) internal combustion engine. This popular mechanism is indispensable in any homestead. The chainsaw is compact and yet powerful. It works without breakdowns for a long time in autonomous mode, due to which it can be used in any location and in a position convenient for the user. The chainsaw has other advantages:
- Equipped with mechanisms for selecting operating speed and smooth starting. This reduces the risk of chain breakage to a minimum.
- Can be used in high humidity conditions.
- Does not require electrical energy.
- It is characterized by high power indicators (noticeably greater than those of a power tool).
- Has a quick-acting inertia brake.
A chainsaw is a chain hand tool
The main advantage of a gasoline saw is the ability to equip it with various attachments. It is they who make it a universal tool, indispensable for the home craftsman. Using a chainsaw, you can saw logs, cut stone, metal, brick, tiled building materials, remove bark from wood, cut out mounting grooves and various recesses in bars.
The functionality of the tool can be expanded even further, the main thing is to choose the right attachment or equip it with a special device.
We will not describe all the capabilities of the chainsaw. In this article, we are only interested in the issue of sawing logs using a chainsaw. More on the features of doing such work with your own hands.
Do-it-yourself motor cultivator, snow blower, ice auger and drill bit
A chainsaw motor is also perfect for creating a motorized cultivator designed for plowing virgin soil (for light soils). To work with dense and wet soils, the power and torque of the engine most likely will not be enough, but for loosening the surface layer and removing the roots of weeds remaining in the ground, a cultivator using a chainsaw will be enough. The main part of the device is a rotating cutter, due to which the equipment moves around the site.
Drawing of a DIY snow blower using a chainsaw
If you replace the shaft with plowshares in the cultivator with an auger, and also equip the structure with an intake device and a pipe for throwing away snow, the cultivator turns into a snowblower. A motor from any saw with a power of 3-5 horsepower will be more than enough to clear loose snow on the site. It is only important to make a convenient screw mechanism. For this purpose, blades made of thick rubber are most often used. Parts made of galvanized steel are suitable as an intake device. Snow removal is easy to do by installing a large diameter plastic pipe.
Drilling through ice or frozen ground with hand tools is a rather long and physically demanding task. Making a motor drill with your own hands will greatly simplify this task. In this case, in addition to the motor, it is necessary to have a gearbox that regulates the number of revolutions per minute, because the device does not require such strong rotation as a chainsaw.
Helpful advice! If you do not have enough knowledge regarding the operation of the gearbox, you can seek help from an engineer who will help you choose the right mechanism. The required type of device is selected depending on the characteristics of the motor.
To create a motorcycle or ice drill with your own hands, the first thing you need to do is make a reliable housing, which is a truncated pyramid consisting of two rectangles of different sizes. You will need a grinder, a welding machine and metal pipes. It is inside this frame that the gearbox will be installed; accordingly, the dimensions of the housing will directly depend on the size of the gearbox.
Chainsaw brownies will become indispensable assistants on the farm
For reliability, experts recommend using a part from a good motor drill made of durable steel as an auger, because low-quality material will not withstand heavy loads. Another important issue is reliable fastening of the drill, which can be done using an ordinary pipe, fixed on both sides with dowels or studs. This method of fastening will allow you to change drills or use other devices for work.
Attachments and accessories for sawing – the home craftsman will appreciate them!
Cutting a log with a gasoline saw can be done after it has been equipped with various types of devices and special attachments. It is not difficult to obtain relatively smooth boards from the trunk of an old, dried tree in your summer cottage if you install a standard attachment for longitudinal cutting of wood on your chainsaw. Important point. You won't get perfect boards when using this attachment. But the cut products can be used to build a fence around the site or a simple shed.
An attachment for longitudinal cutting of wood is installed on the chainsaw.
If the tool will be used permanently, the chainsaw guide is made of a flat wooden block or a metal profile. It should be as tough as possible. The ends of the homemade guide are mounted on sawhorses. And then a log is placed under this structure for sawing. The process of processing it will occur quickly and without unnecessary labor costs.
It is worth noting that the described technique is used exclusively for cutting trunks of small length. If you take a longer log, the guide will begin to sag. As a result, the trunk cannot be cut efficiently and evenly.
Preparing for work
When starting to dismantle the round timber, you should build two strong stands where the log can be placed or rolled using levers. To prevent the trunk from fidgeting and turning, the sides are lined with wooden wedges.
The most difficult thing is to saw off the upper slab evenly, because the resulting cut, like a template, will be used for further work. To avoid skewing, two wooden blocks, leveled, are nailed or screwed to the ends of the log. A flat board is placed on them with self-tapping screws, and also wedged. After checking the geometry, you can start cutting.
We cut the trunk across - there will be no difficulties!
As you can see, longitudinal sawing with a chainsaw is a rather labor-intensive process. If you want to get logs by sawing the trunk crosswise and then make boards from them, the operation will be impractical due to the large expenditure of effort. Most often, cross-cutting is used when it is necessary to make country street furniture from wood - tables, benches, small benches. It is also recommended for preparing firewood and for decorating garden paths using sawn logs. In such situations, logs are cut into disks of small thickness (up to 15 cm).
Cross cutting is used in the manufacture of country furniture
The cross cutting process is as follows:
- Place the trunk on trestles 70–80 cm in height (they should be as stable as possible).
- Remove the bark from the wood, if any.
- Make a small cut. It will play the role of a guide groove.
- Rotate the barrel being processed 90°. The tire of a power tool must run strictly along the intended groove.
- If you need logs, use an ax to make notches in the wood.
- Sawing the trunk.
Transverse and longitudinal cutting of logs must be carried out in compliance with safety standards. It is advisable to carry out work in thick clothing, gloves, glasses, and headphones. Prepare a first aid kit in advance - a chainsaw is a potentially unsafe tool that can cause serious injury to a person. Always move the saw forward along the guide and do not try to push it harder. The tool should move freely.
The chainsaw must not be raised above the shoulders. The tool must only be run on the ground. In this case, the chain brake must be in the engaged state. Its release is carried out just before the start of cutting logs. Do not fill the gasoline container if the saw has recently been used. You should wait until the tool and fuel tank cool down. Take care to carry out work safely. And then sawing up tree trunks on your own will not lead to dire consequences. Good luck.
