How to choose the right faucet spout for your sink

What is the length of the faucet spout?

What types of spouts are there for faucets? What should you pay attention to when choosing? What materials are modern taps made from? What is the length of the faucet spout, its height and width? We tried to answer these and other questions in as much detail as possible.

Types of spouts

First of all, there are static and rotary models. Devices of the first type are stationary. On the one hand, this is not very convenient, on the other hand, such structures are more durable. Such ganders are usually installed in cases where there is no need to use the faucet for both the sink and for drawing water into the bathtub.

If there is such a need, use a swivel spout for the mixer. What it is? Such models can be moved along a certain trajectory due to the presence of a moving mechanism. The downside is that this particular structural element is the weak link, reducing the service life of the crane.

Depending on the production method, spouts are:

  • tubular;
  • soldered;
  • cast.

Tubular

These ganders are the most popular due to their affordable cost. They are made by bending metal tubes. At the end, which is attached to the body, there are grooves. They contain a split plastic ring with two rubber bands.

It serves as a stop for the union nut. Rubber bands seal the connection, limiting the “unauthorized” movement of water. In some versions they are not limited to one ring, adding a thin plastic gasket, although this does not make much sense.

The other end of the tube is equipped with a thread for an aerator.

Soldered

The advantage of these spouts compared to tubular ones is the variety of shapes, but they are more expensive. A plastic ring with elastic bands is put on the nipple here.

The latter is screwed into the body, after which the tap is inserted into it and secured with a nut or screw. Nuts for the nipple and aerator are soldered into the ends of the product.

Unlike the production of tubular models, the metal blank is not only bent, but also inflated. Thus, ganders with uneven diameter are obtained.

Cast

This is the most expensive option. The body is cast as a monolith, threads are cut at the ends for the aerator and nipple. Such structures are easily distinguished by their solid heaviness. These stopcocks are made from brass LS-59.

Brazed and tubular products are made either from cheaper brass or from metal alloys that are much inferior in their physical and technical characteristics. Chrome is most often used as a coating; expensive models can be finished with exquisite decorative materials.

Popular brands: Jacob Delafon, Blanco, Hansgrohe, IDDIS, Lemark, Grohe.

Main settings

When choosing a spout for your faucet, be sure to take into account parameters such as height and length. Ease of use directly depends on them.

The height of the faucet spout is an indicator that displays the shortest distance between the base of the body and the hole from which water comes out.

Low (up to 15 cm) and medium (15–25 cm) taps are preferable in cases where the sink is used exclusively for washing and brushing teeth. They pair well with shallow and flat bowls.

The length of the faucet spout is the total distance between the extreme points of the product. This parameter can range from 3.2 to 51 cm. A long tap is appropriate if you have a wide sink.

When a powerful jet constantly hits the walls of the washbasin, plaque will quickly form on them. Ideally, it should fall exactly on the drain valve.

With a short gander, on the contrary, a narrow shell is preferable.

Spout selection

The answer to the question of how to choose the length of a sink faucet spout largely depends on where the device is installed. In the kitchen, it is preferable to use tall taps to increase the space for washing dishes.

If you need a universal model for your sink and bathtub, purchase a long swivel jib. If the product is planned to be used only for the sink, take a fixed short spout, installing it directly on the bowl.

You can do the same with a bath faucet.

Pay attention to the installation of the mixer

If you want originality, you can purchase a cascade-shaped gander. Its main difference from classic tubular taps is the flat and wide spout.

Thanks to this design, filling the most spacious bathtub takes just a few minutes. But such spouts also cost much more than traditional ones.

Interesting models: Hansgrohe Axor Massaud 18453000, Grohe Grohtherm Cube 34497000, Jacob Delafon Toobi E8963-BN.

Spout type and height

In faucets, experts call the spout the part that ordinary users call the “gander.” This is a tube from which water flows. They come in different types and sizes:

  • straight;
  • curved;
  • with retractable flexible spout.

If straight and curved are the usual varieties, then kitchen faucets with a pull-out spout have appeared quite recently. In them, the “gander” consists of two parts, which are connected to each other using a flexible hose. This type of faucet is also called “with a watering can” or “with a shower.”

Kitchen faucets with pull-out shower head

The hose is made of elastic rubber. On top there may be a protective braid made of stainless steel or a corrugated pipe (also made of stainless steel). If necessary, you just need to pull the lower part - the spout lengthens by 60-90 cm (different models have different lengths). A convenient device, but more often found on expensive models.

How high and at what distance

With the height of the spout, you need to find a middle ground - if the water pours from a high height, there will be a lot of splashes, if the spout is low, there will be problems with washing large pots, jars, etc. The optimal distance from the sink to the “gander” from which water flows is around 30-40 cm. Based on these figures, you need to select a faucet model for the kitchen sink. For a deep sink, a low faucet may be suitable, but for a container of shallow depth, a taller one will be required.

It should be convenient to use

To choose the right kitchen faucet, you need to find a spout that is shaped so that the water flows approximately above the center of the sink. The permissible error is plus or minus 10% of the sink size. In this case it will be convenient to use.

Nozzle design

This is the part from which water directly flows. Usually it is equipped with a mesh to “catch” large mechanical inclusions. If you have water purification filters at the inlet, this mesh does not play any role at all. The type of jet that the nozzle produces is more important:

  • An ordinary stream without breaking it up into streams. Today, this type of faucet is rare - the water consumption is high.
  • Aerator. There are many small jets that create the feeling of an intense flow due to the mixing of a large number of small air bubbles. The most economical option - consumption is reduced by 20-35%.
  • Rain. A few streams, but without strong pressure. Convenient to wash greens, delicate fruits, etc.

Most often, a kitchen faucet is equipped with an aerator, but there are models that have two operating modes - aeration and rain. Modes are switched by turning the lever.

How to choose a faucet spout

Types of spouts

It’s worth saying right away that there are rotary and static models. Devices of the first type are stationary. On the one hand, this is not very convenient, but on the other, such structures are more durable. Typically, such ganders are installed in cases where there is no need to use a tap both for drawing water into the bathtub and for the sink.

If there is such a need, use a rotary spout model for the mixer. What is she? Such models can be moved along a certain trajectory as a result of the presence of a damaged mechanism. The disadvantage is that it is precisely this structural element that acts as a weak link, which reduces the life of the crane.

Depending on the production technology, spouts are:

Let's look at each type in more detail.

Soldered

Compared to tubular ones, their advantage lies in the variety of shapes, but their cost is also higher. A plastic ring with rubber bands is put on the nipple with an elastic band.

The latter is unscrewed into the body, and then the tap is inserted into it and secured with a screw or nut. At the end of the product, nuts for the aerator and nipple are soldered in.

Unlike the production of tubular models, the metal blank is not just bent, but also inflated. Thus, the resulting ganders have an uneven diameter.

Tubular

Such geese are the most sought after due to their decent cost. They are produced by bending special metal tubes. There are grooves at the end that connects to the body. A split plastic ring with two elastic bands is installed in them.

It functions as a stop for the union nut. They seal the connection, eliminating “unauthorized” movement of water. In some versions they are not limited to one ring, adding a plastic gasket, although this does not make much sense.

The other end of the tube is equipped with a thread for an aerator.

Cast

Tubular and brazed products are made either from metal alloys or from cheaper brass, but such materials are much inferior in physical and technical characteristics. Most often, chrome is used as a coating; expensive models are often finished with luxurious decorative materials. Popular brands: Blanco, Hansgrohe, Jacob Delafon, Lemark, Grohe, IDDIS.

Main characteristics

When choosing a faucet spout, you need to take into account indicators such as length and height. Ease of use depends on them.

The height of the faucet spout is an indicator that reflects the shortest distance between the hole and the base of the body from which water comes out. Medium (15-25 cm) and low (up to 15 cm) taps are best used in cases where the sink is used only for brushing teeth and washing. They go well with flat and shallow bowls.

A tall gander allows you to solve many more problems, for example, collecting water into large containers. Such spouts require a fairly deep washbasin, otherwise water splashes will scatter throughout the room.

The spout length is the total distance between the extreme points of the faucet. This figure can range from 3.2 to 51 cm. A long tap is used when there is a wide sink. When the jet constantly hits the walls of the washbasin, plaque will form on them. Ideally, it should fit exactly onto the drain valve. With a short gander, a narrow shell is preferable.

Spout selection

Many people do not know how to choose the length of the sink faucet spout. This indicator largely depends on where exactly the plumbing fixture is installed. In the kitchen, it is better to use tall taps, which will increase the space intended for washing dishes.

If you need a universal model for a bathtub and washbasin, buy a long swivel jib. If you plan to use the product only for the sink, use a short, fixed spout, installing it directly on the bowl. You can do the same with bathtub faucet models.

It is worth paying special attention to the installation of the mixer

If you want originality, you can buy a cascade-shaped gander. Its main difference from traditional tubular taps is its wide and flat spout. Thanks to this design, filling a spacious bathtub takes a few minutes. However, such spouts are much more expensive than traditional ones.

Dimensions

The standard spout height is twenty-five centimeters.

Ganders come in the following sizes:

  • short – 14-18 cm;
  • medium – 20-23 cm;
  • long – 23-27, 30-35 cm.

Foreign manufacturers produce flattened models of 40, 45 and 50 centimeters.

Kitchen sinks are often equipped with a high spout. This leads to an increase in the usable area of the sink and relieves the user of the inconvenience of washing large dishes.

A short and stationary spout is used to decorate the side of the bathtub, or it can be used to decorate the wall above it. In this case, the mobility of the gander will be unnecessary. It would be better to take care of high reliability by reducing the number of components that are prone to frequent breakdowns.

How to choose faucet spout

A faucet spout is an integral part of the plumbing system, which receives water adjusted to the desired temperature. It is an integral part of the mixer or supplied separately.

A nut and a seal are included as integral parts of the spout. Classified depending on size, shape, material of manufacture, purpose.

Can be sold with or without an aerator.

Classification by shape

There are two forms of spout: classic and cascade. Classic, also known as tubular, comes in various sections (round with a diameter of 16-22 mm, triangular, oval, square, flat rectangular), straight, angular, J-, S-, R-, C-shaped, with a double silhouette.

A cascade spout for faucets is a flat design in which a stream of water, passing through a wide but thin slot, resembles a falling waterfall. A classic spout is a universal solution for faucets, but a cascade spout is rare.

Those who do not skimp on innovative solutions and original design can purchase a faucet with a spring-loaded, spiral-shaped spout that bends in different directions.

In height it can be high and low, in size - elongated, medium and short. The length of the spout should correspond to the dimensions of the sink so that water does not splash on the sides.

Classification by material of manufacture

The spout is made from anti-corrosion stainless steel and plastic. Among the alloys it is worth noting such as aluminum - silicon (a fairly budget option), brass - bronze (characterized by strength and durability).

You can choose faucets with a stone spout (kitchen version, characterized by the ability to produce any shape and color using the casting method). Typically, faucet spouts are chrome plated. The coating can also be nickel, gold plated, or enamel.

The spout for faucets is made cast (fixed) and rotary. Rotary is designed to direct the flow of water in the desired direction (the angle of rotation can reach 360º).

This innovative solution is convenient and practical for sinks with several sections.

Spout purpose

Depending on the purpose, there are spouts for faucets in the bathtub and in the kitchen.

A low, long spout for a faucet is more suitable for the bathroom; a short and high, as well as a long, swivel spout will not restrict movement when doing household chores in the kitchen (washing dishes, cooking).

Some faucet models can be equipped with filtered water spouts. The choice of spouts, both domestic and foreign, is large. Italian and German manufacturers have proven themselves well, for example Kaiser, Grohe, Hansa and others.

How to install?

First, the mixer is installed.

To do this, you need to take the mixer and screw the connecting hoses to it. You should not tighten the hose too tightly - you may strip the threads, which should not be allowed to prevent leaks. Then you need to check whether the hose is leaking. To extend the operating period, the sealing gasket must be treated with a special lubricant.

The next step is to install the seal.

After that, connecting hoses are threaded through the hole in the sink, and then the mixer is installed. A rubber seal is put on the bottom, then a half-moon metal washer is put on and the nut is tightened. You should tighten it by hand first. Once installation is complete, the nut is finally tightened with a wrench. It is important not to overdo the force applied.

The next step is to install the sink directly with the necessary equipment already attached to the bedside table, after which you need to screw the fasteners.

Next, two taps are installed. They are attached to the mixer using an adjustable wrench. Then the valves are put on the taps, secured with bolts using a screwdriver. Then the top caps are put on the valves. The main thing is that during installation you do not confuse the blue cap for cold water and the red cap for hot water.

Then the spout is attached to the mixer.

First, take the spout and check for the presence of a sealing gasket. If you wish, you can lubricate the gasket with special products that extend its service life. Then the fastening will be more reliable. Then the spout is inserted into the mixer and tightly screwed with nuts using a wrench. The spout is a replaceable part of the faucet.

In this process, using connecting hoses (already screwed to the faucet), hot and cold water is supplied to the faucet from the plumbing system.

The final step can be considered checking for leaks at the fastening points where the hoses and pipes are connected to the mixer. If a leak is detected in the fastenings, the sealing gaskets should be dismantled, checked and replaced, if necessary.

To clean or replace parts, you need to remove and unscrew all elements in the reverse order of their installation.

What is the body made of?

The durability of a kitchen sink faucet is greatly influenced by the material from which the body and spout are made. Today there is quite a large amount of materials. Only the ceramic models differ in appearance; all the others “look” absolutely the same. However, you need to know what the faucet is made of in order to know what you can expect from it.

  • Stainless steel. The most durable, but also the most expensive option. But the service life is long.
  • Brass. A very good option, but only if the alloy is of good quality, suitable for use in the food industry. Brass kitchen faucets last a very long time, even very bad water does not harm them.
  • Bronze. Also a good option, but most often bronze taps are made in a retro style. In this case, they are not covered with any protective coatings. In ordinary models, bronze cases are made quite rarely.
  • Silumin is an alloy of aluminum and silicon. A light alloy, similar in appearance to aluminum, but very unreliable. The bodies of the cheapest faucets are made from this alloy. Their service life is no more than a year.
  • Plastic. Not a bad material, but not for taps - it wears out quickly, and its protective coating peels off from constant contact with water. Plastic faucets also belong to the budget category.
  • Ceramics. Ceramic sink faucets look very impressive, but they are expensive and require very careful operation. They cannot withstand shock loads at all. You must be very careful when washing dishes.

How to choose a kitchen faucet made of good brass? By weight. Brass with a high lead content has thin walls, which means the tap itself is much lighter. Other features include color. It is sometimes possible to look into the inside of some faucets to evaluate the alloy based on this characteristic. In low-quality brass it is reddish in color, in normal brass it is yellow.
