Do-it-yourself hydraulic silent block remover

Using a puller

First of all, I would like to note one important point. The fact is that replacing an element without a puller can damage it and the mechanism as a whole. Often, experienced craftsmen try to nail the inside of the device using a hammer. But often such manipulation leads to the fact that the part fits unevenly and its internal part begins to be damaged over time. The solution to this problem is the use of a hydraulic silent block puller, which helps connect the two parts of the device in such a way as to prevent damage. In this case, the puller circuit is based on the use of a long threaded device to unscrew and screw in the element. This allows for uniform lowering and raising of the inside of the part. As for doing the work of making a puller with your own hands, in this matter significant attention should be given to familiarizing yourself with the diagram. You can also look at the designs of ready-made pullers, which can be found in any automotive store.

How to make a puller: manufacturing instructions

Using a puller, you can quickly and easily remove and press in silent blocks. To manufacture such a convenient part, you do not need an enormous amount of knowledge and skills. The work of making a puller is not particularly difficult and can be done by any motorist if desired. The main thing for this is to take the right tool:

  • Keys and screwdrivers;
  • A piece of strong metal pipe with a diameter slightly larger than the silent block;
  • Steel washers;
  • Long threaded bolt;
  • Overalls and gloves.

First, you need to thoroughly study the car suspension and decide how best to use the puller. Next, a silent block should be inserted into part of the pipe on one side, and a new mechanism on the other. Direct the silent block into the seat, take the bolt and screw it to the center.

More details about the manufacture of a silent block remover will be discussed in this video:

Auto repair shop specialists and ordinary car enthusiasts know how important it is to have all the necessary tools on hand when servicing a vehicle.

Despite the fact that the time of independently “digging” in the car has almost passed, many car owners still perform basic tasks on their own.

For example, for experienced car enthusiasts it will not be difficult to replace silent blocks, but in order for this process to go without a hitch, it is better to purchase a special puller in advance.

How to choose the specified tool, what to look for and which popular models to pay attention to today - read below.

Ways to press in silent blocks

There are several options for pressing silent blocks.

Option with a vice

Before pressing the component, it is necessary to clean the seats from rust and burrs with sandpaper. Then lubricate the eyes with Litol lubricant or liquid soap. Place the part on top of the lever, place a special mandrel on it, and use a vice to press the component into the socket.

Pressing using a press

The silent blocks can be pressed in using the press puller that was used to remove the part. You need to select the necessary attachment for pressing, lubricate the eye, install the part correctly and press it, periodically checking so that the component does not go awry.

Press-out device

To make sure that components need to be replaced, you need to do a visual inspection of the rubber parts. They must be intact, without deformation. There should be no play when the car is rocking. When the car is moving, wear will be revealed by the knocking of the suspension, swaying of the body and unstable movement of the car.

To get a silent block at home, you need to:

  1. Place the lever under the press on the stand where the silent block will go. Place a spacer on top to press out the bushing and press out the part.
  2. Using a vice instead of a press, you can squeeze out silent blocks using the same method.
  3. You can use a hydraulic jack. To do this, you will first need to weld a frame from a corner or channel in the form of a rectangle, which is larger in height than the jack. Insert the two spacers listed above and raise the jack until the silent block is pressed into the mandrel. You need to choose a more powerful jack - 10-15 tons, because lifts with 3-5 tons may not help.
  4. In the absence of special devices, a homemade or factory press puller is used, which squeezes out the part using a bolt, washers, nut and two extensions. All these components must be durable and reliable. Using such a device, you can press out without dismantling the hub and lever.

Using brute force

If you don’t have any of the above devices at hand, you can use an ordinary hammer and screwdriver or some thick sharpened pin to press out the silent blocks. It must be driven between the bushing and the silent block. As a result, the bushing of the part is deformed inward, after which it will be possible to pull out the rubber band and knock out the silent block.

You can press out the part using a metal blade, a screwdriver and a hammer. To do this, you need to remove the inner sleeve and carefully saw through the silent block with a blade so as not to damage the lever. Then use a screwdriver to pull out the part.

To press a silent block using brute force, you need to insert the part into the eye, and hammer it into its seat with a sharp and strong blow of a hammer.

Disadvantages of this method:

  • The silent fits crookedly into the eyelet;
  • bites the rubber parts of the part;
  • The impact may damage the lever or silent block.

After using this method, the component is often damaged and will need to be repressed.

How to choose

Appearance

There can be a wide variety of such tools, because today they are presented both as a separate C-shaped device with several attachments, and as whole sets, which include guide pins with nuts, sleeves and support disks for them.

There are also universal pullers and those designed for a specific car brand , which must be taken into account when purchasing.

A correctly selected product will help you easily cope with difficult work, since the silent block is quite firmly fixed in its seat and sometimes it takes a lot of effort to remove it.

Depending on the type of part (whether it is an element of the front suspension, stabilizers or fastening of torque rods) installed on a car or truck, a puller for removing silent blocks - elements that reduce rattling and noise when the vehicle is moving - will have its own characteristics.

Do-it-yourself silent block remover drawings
Among the wide variety of domestic and foreign tools presented on modern markets, you can find absolutely any puller that will meet all the technical parameters of your machine and individual requirements (for example, cost).

However, the main task in any case remains the choice of a quality product that will serve faithfully for many years. Therefore, now we invite you to familiarize yourself with the list of characteristics that are worth paying attention to, and the list of features that are unworthy of it.

What to look for:

So, when choosing a silent block remover for VAZ cars or foreign cars, you should consider the following:

  • the model of your car, unless, of course, you decide to buy a universal tool (by the way, there is an opinion that specialized products are much more durable than universal pullers, but in practice it all depends on the manufacturer);
  • the presence of smooth edges in all threaded connections of special tools;
  • absence of rough areas and open shells;
  • ease of unscrewing and tightening detachable parts;
  • the requirements of the selected model for other, additional tools, without which it cannot be operated;
  • type of puller: manual or hydraulic (for personal use or for car maintenance in small workshops, the first option will be sufficient);
  • Availability of instructions in a language you understand.

Sellers can assure you that the same instructions are not so important, because the mechanism of the tool is extremely simple and easy to use, but you must understand that when delivering quality products, such a trifle cannot be a problem.

What you can ignore:

In addition to the indicated important criteria for choosing a silent block remover (both universal and for specific vehicle models), there are also several less significant nuances that can often be regarded as a regular advertising ploy. These include:

  • a list of functions that almost all models perform: easy removal of silent blocks, long service life, etc.;
  • the relationship between price and quality (despite the fact that many people associate these two indicators, more well-known companies may unreasonably inflate the prices of their tools, and with a more careful study of the offers on the market, you can find a puller with the same characteristics, but at a more affordable price) .

Instructions for replacing rear beam silent blocks with a puller

Replacement of rear beam silent blocks is carried out in the following order:

1. The car is placed on a jack or lift so that its feet are not in the same plane as the brackets on the rear beam.

2. The beam is disconnected by unscrewing the nuts that secure it, and the hand brake cable is disconnected.

3. Dismantle the bracket holding the brake hoses through the slots in the brackets. After freeing the beam from the bolts, the front part of the machine is lowered.

4. The handbrake cable is moved to the side so that it does not interfere.

5. The beam is fixed, and the silent blocks are pressed out with a puller.

6. Before installing a new part, the area under it is carefully processed and lubricated.

7. The new part is inserted, the frames are assembled and pressing is performed, after which there should be no holes or gaps left.

8. The beam is assembled in the reverse order.

Quite a lot of car enthusiasts are interested in how to make a silent block remover with their own hands. After all, these vibration-reducing suspension elements have to be changed quite often. Moreover, this applies not only to domestic cars, but also to many foreign cars. The problem is related to the poor quality of roads. A sporty driving style also negatively affects the technical condition of silent blocks as part of the suspension. Incorrect installation will not extend the service life.

Many mechanics hammer the silent block with a hammer. In this case, the rubber is damaged and the metal bushing may become dislodged. Therefore, always use pullers; as a last resort, there are completely harmless methods to put the part in place without the help of specialized tools. We will talk about this at the end of the article.

Do-it-yourself silent block remover drawings

How to make a silent block remover with your own hands? Before answering this question, it is advisable to understand what a silent block is. This will make it easier to make a puller.

A silent block is a rubber-metal joint that is capable of dampening vibrations that occur in the suspension. On passenger cars, a part made in the form of a metal bushing with an elastomer body is more common. The most common option for making a hinge is regular rubber. But polypropylene hinges can be called the most durable and high-quality. It is recommended to purchase exactly these when replacing.

  • How to make a silent block remover

A good car owner knows that while driving, vibrations are formed in all components of the car, and silent blocks are installed in the system to absorb them. This part is designed in such a way that the fit in the eye must be very tight so that the moving elements are fixed during movement. Malfunctions of the silent block can be indicated by its movement along the seat. You must always monitor the condition of this element, since the performance of the system where this or that silent block is installed will depend on it. Due to the very strong fixation of the element, this extraction requires a lot of effort. The silent block can be dismantled by specialists, but this is quite expensive from a financial point of view. Therefore, car owners try to replace everything themselves in order to spend less money. All work can be done using a special puller, which you can either buy or make yourself.

How to choose a silent block remover

The condition of our roads leaves much to be desired, and the driver’s carelessness makes itself felt - the silent block design includes rubber inserts that wear out very quickly. Due to their functions, silent blocks are constantly exposed to variable loads. Despite the fact that it is quite difficult to replace silent blocks, you can perform this operation yourself without turning to a workshop for help. In a good car store, you have probably come across a set of universal keys for replacing silent blocks, but often such a device is produced for each specific model.

Due to the abundance of tools on the market, it is important to make the right choice so that you don’t have to spend money again later. When purchasing a set of tools, pay special attention to the quality of the tool:

— absolutely all threaded connections must have smooth, unclogged edges;

- all elements of the device should not have rough edges that were missed during processing, as well as open cavities.

Take a similar set of pullers from another manufacturer and compare the quality of the product as a whole, as well as individual parts. Immediately pay attention to the list of tools that are necessary in order to use this particular set of pullers.

It may happen that in your garage there will not be exactly the key for which the edges on the puller are sharpened. A sign of high quality pullers is the sharpening of the edges for the most common keys, which can be found in almost every garage. The importance of this aspect can only be appreciated during operation. If a set of pullers meets all the criteria, then you can safely buy such a set.

How to make a silent block remover

It should be noted that when replacing the silent block, there is a high probability that the mechanism part will be damaged. Using a hydraulic puller, you can easily separate one element from another without damaging them. The puller works on the principle of screwing in and unscrewing a special device of impressive length with a thread. This device evenly raises and lowers the interior. The name of this process is pressing; its service life will depend on the degree of uniformity and smoothness. When repairing a suspension, it is important to ensure that all components are in working position. If everything is done wrong, then the newly installed silent block will work efficiently for much less time than it should.

The type of installation varies depending on the type of mechanism installed in the car - without partitions or with them.

But this does not affect the choice of puller in any way. You can use either a home-made or a purchased device - the principle of operation remains unchanged: one part needs to be attached to the indoor unit, and the other to the external one. Through translational and rotational movements, one part is twisted out of the other.

Before you start making a puller, look for a diagram of the device on the Internet. The hydraulic puller is universal. It is suitable for both removal and pressing. It is quite easy to make such a device - you need to take several parts, allocating an hour or two for production. But then you can use this mechanism repeatedly when performing repair work on the suspension.

To make a puller, you will need the following tools: a set of screwdrivers and wrenches, a small piece of metal pipe, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the silent block taken, several large-diameter steel washers, an elongated bolt with good threads, gloves and overalls.

The sequence of work is as follows:

1) Completely study the design of the machine, in particular the suspension design. Compare the new part with the old one, analyze their structure and try to figure out how best to use the puller.

2) Next, you need to take a pipe, on one side of which you need to insert a replacement silent block. On the opposite side you need to insert a new device. It must be done so that the old mechanism is squeezed out by the new one, and in such a way that no damage is caused to any part.

3) The new mechanism must be precisely directed into the seat, and the pre-prepared bolt must be screwed in the center. At first, the bolt will be quite difficult to tighten, so you need to lightly tap the parts with a hammer, after which you can continue working. From about the middle, the bolt will go in easily, so much so that you can even turn it with your fingers. But be sure to wear gloves to avoid damaging your hands.

4) It is impossible to save the old part with homemade pullers; after removal, it may simply fall. Therefore, build a stand that will serve as a stand. A cup with metal handles is perfect for this role.

There are other available means and methods that can be used as a puller. If you decide to make the mechanism yourself, then think about what is most unnecessary in your garage. Use these unnecessary parts to make a puller. It's enough to just think about this question. When you create a puller, take into account the fact that different machine models may have their own parts and parameters, which may differ in size and structure. In order for the puller you made to fit, these parameters and features of the car must be taken into account.

Constantly monitor the condition of the silent blocks and regularly carry out diagnostics of the chassis. If these elements wear out greatly, the car's handling will drop significantly, and this can cause an accident on the road. Be carefull.

Making a puller

As already written above, it is not recommended to remove this part from the car without a puller. When removing, you can hit the paw (lever) and damage it. Moreover, the worst thing here is microcracks that can come out at the most inopportune moment. This will lead to an accident. Hammering a new silent block into place damages the mounted part. Soon after the replacement, your car's suspension will begin to knock again.

It is also possible that the wheel alignment angles may be disrupted (this is only possible on models with four-link suspension). In this case, you will not only get an extraordinary replacement of the joints, but also the need to purchase new wheels.

A purchased tool, in this case, is not always the best choice. They are not always reliable. Also, you should buy them, but why spend money on something that you can easily make yourself from practically waste material. Another reason why people try to make such a device on their own is the need to change the hinge, but there is no puller at hand.

First you need to understand how the puller works. In the simplest version, by tightening the nut, the silent block is squeezed out of the lever eye. There are also hydraulic devices. They work on the same principle, but are driven in different ways. It is almost impossible to assemble a hydraulic puller in a garage. Therefore, we will make a screw version of the device.

Do-it-yourself silent block remover drawings

To work you will need the following:

  • Bolt. It is selected empirically;
  • Cylinder. It should be slightly wider than the hole in which the silent block is placed;
  • Several washers. One should reliably cover the cylinder hole. Sometimes it is simply welded onto one of its ends.
  • The rest should be smaller than the diameter of the silent block;
  • Suitable size nut.

Assembling the device is quite simple; insert the bolt into the cylinder. On the reverse side it is assumed that a nut will be installed. All that remains is to put this miracle of garage assembly into practice. The puller works like this:

  • Remove the silent block axis. For greater convenience, it is better to remove the lever from the machine. But, on some models you can do the work directly on the car. We clamp the removed paw in a vice;
  • To press out the hinge, you need to install a cylinder on one side. The bolt is inserted into the hole. Please note that its length should allow you to place several washers on the other side and screw on the nut;
  • Place the washers and begin to tighten the nut on the resulting puller. Gradually, it will squeeze the silent block out of the mounting hole.

As you can see, making such a device for removing hinges is not too difficult.

Do-it-yourself silent block remover: how to do it, what is needed?

For garage handicraftsmen, it is a pleasure to make various devices for repairing automotive components. You can make pullers with your own hands to remove silent blocks, to remove wheel hubs, etc. All you need is desire, materials and time to make.

articles:

What is a silent block

A silent block is a rubber-metal hinge (RMH) - an element that connects two suspension parts, in this case, a car. Consists of metal and rubber. Rubber serves to dampen vibration, smooth movement, and eliminate wear caused by metal-on-metal friction.

Silent blocks or RMS - receive and dampen axial, radial, torsion and cardan vibrations. Withstands radial vibrations up to 300 kN (kilo Newton), that is, up to 300 kg.

  1. with outer ring;
  2. from the inside;
  3. double cage;
  4. eccentric.

Silent blocks of this type are installed in car suspensions so that the levers and springs can move.

Classification of RMSs that work in compression with bending:

Hinges of this type are installed under the engine (mounts, cushions) to dampen vibration oscillations of a running and moving engine. Protects the body from vibrations.

Replacing silent blocks

Depending on the driving style (careful or sporty) and the quality of the roads, the lifespan of silent blocks differs. They can wear out in one summer, or they can last for several years.

Also, the service life of the RMS depends on how they were installed. In the absence of a puller, some people hit them with a hammer. If you plant silent blocks with a hammer, the rubber may be damaged and the metal bushing may move.

The average resource of silent blocks is from 100 to 150 thousand kilometers.

What is a puller for installing silent blocks?

This is what a RMSH puller looks like, which you can make yourself. In order to make it yourself, at home, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Bolt with nut. The diameter and pitch of the thread are at your discretion. If the thread is small, you will have to turn it longer, but it will work easier and smoother.
  • We select a cylinder with a diameter such that the silent block fits into it.
  • Washers. Some. One washer should tightly cover the cylinder hole. You can even weld the washer on one side. We take the remaining washers with a smaller diameter than the diameter of the silent block.

A RC puller is needed not only for removal, but also for installation, so as not to damage the new silent blocks. And when removing with a puller, there is no need to hit with a hammer and there is no risk of damaging the paws (levers). If you knock out rubber-metal hinges with a hammer, microcracks may appear on the lever.

On cars with 4-link suspension, the wheel alignment angles may be disrupted if the levers or new silent blocks are damaged. In this case, you will have to change the rubber-metal bushings and, possibly, the wheels again.

In terms of cost, pullers for automobile silent blocks can be purchased at prices ranging from 800 rubles to 30,000 rubles (a set of different pullers). But it is easy to make from available materials.

The operating principle of a mechanical puller is that when the nut is tightened, the silent block itself is squeezed out of the lever eye.

Hydraulic ones are more complex in design, they are more powerful, but it is better to buy them when necessary; it is impossible to make them from scrap materials.

How to make a puller

After preparing the above parts, we proceed to assembling the removable device:

  1. We close one end of the cylinder with one washer, with a hole for the selected bolt.
  2. We insert the bolt into a cylinder selected in diameter, slightly larger than the diameter of the silent block.
  3. After putting it on the silent block, tighten the nut.

Procedure for working with the puller:

  1. Remove the RMS axle. You can completely dismantle the paw and secure it in a vice, or you can press it out directly in its installed form.
  2. We install the puller cylinder to the silent block.
  3. Insert the bolt. We take the bolt of such length that you can throw on a couple of washers and tighten the nut.
  4. We put the washers on the bolt and begin to tighten the nut.
  5. Gradually the hinge will begin to slip.

If you remove silent blocks without a puller, you must use a wooden strip to avoid damaging the rods.
