Working principle of shot blasting

The principle of shot blasting using specialized installations is as follows. The product is introduced into a chamber consisting of metal plates and coated on the inside with a persistent noise-attenuating material. From a shot blasting machine it is processed with shots of different diameters, which are fed in doses.

The recovery system allows the shot to be returned to the installation for later use. The filtration system for shot removes excess components (dust, dirt) and starts it into the process again. The product is moved by a conveyor belt, and shock-resistant lamps help monitor the lighting. Air filters and special lifts, accordingly, purify the air and help the operator monitor the process.

Thanks to the use of such sandblasting machines, the process of cleaning coatings occurs as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Alternative to shot blasting booths

Shot blasting equipment did not appear out of nowhere. This is not know-how, but a deep modernization of other equipment for abrasive processing. We are talking about shotgun devices .

The first shotguns appeared at the end of the 19th century.

Shot throwers do not use the power of compressed air. Abrasive particles are pushed out by fan blades, which are driven by an electric motor. Interestingly, classic shotguns are still available for sale even today.

The main advantage of shot blasting technology over shot blasting is its low noise level . Additionally, shotguns do not require a compressor . Cleaning workpieces using shotguns is relevant at those sites where it is undesirable to create a lot of noise, and also where there is no source of compressed air.

But when it comes to reliability, durability, and performance, shot blasting machines are far superior to shot blasters.

Advantages and scope

The scope of application of shot blasting equipment is quite extensive. Their use is indispensable for:

  • Quick removal of old paint and varnish coatings;
  • Cleaning the surface from scale and rust particles;
  • Giving artificial roughness to coatings;
  • Removing molding sand residues;
  • Preparatory work for painting, cladding, spraying.

We note versatility as an advantage of abrasive blasting units. They can be used for different materials with varying degrees of contamination, using fractions that differ from each other in particle size and hardness. Besides:

  • Depending on the model, the efficiency of consumables can reach 60%;
  • The functionality of many units allows you to work at different humidity levels and in any temperature conditions;
  • Shot blasting allows you to keep your work area clean, with minimal dirt. After each cycle, the installation independently disposes of production waste.

Application of shot blasting machines

An industrial shot blasting machine is used to process metal parts and structures in order to enhance their protective properties and prepare them for further application of a protective coating. Cleaning of products occurs due to the impact of small steel shot, flying out of the apparatus at great speed, on their surface. As a result of this treatment, a protective layer with high compressive stress is formed on the surface. After using shot blasting, the anti-corrosion properties of the metal are significantly increased, irregularities are smoothed out, the surface of the parts gets rid of rust, scale, oil and other contaminants and acquires the necessary roughness.

Advantages of shot blasting equipment

Cleaning with this method allows you to carry out some repair work - this is one of the advantages of the method. Plus, shot blasting helps extend the life of a metal structure or any other item that is subjected to this particular cleaning method. In addition, shot blasting protects against new corrosion, rust and scale. Shot blasting will also help remove old paint from the surface.

Such equipment (of any format) can be installed both in open areas and in closed areas - inside an enterprise or workshop. Shot blasting is an extremely versatile process that is applicable not only to metal structures, but also to construction projects. However, it is worth taking into account the nuances of the work so that there is no damage after cleaning.

One of the most important advantages is the performance of the equipment. The chamber can clean up to 200 square meters in one hour. Of course, a lot depends on the modification and power.

An important factor is the fact that shot blasting is the most environmentally friendly method. During processing, the painter can work without a respirator, only in a suit. In addition, the method is considered better than sandblasting.

Features of the work

Shot blasting of metal is an industrial cleaning technology that is used when working with homogeneous metals and alloys.
Before you start cleaning, you need to select the power of the compressor, the size of the abrasive particles, and the material from which the shot is made. These indicators affect the quality of cleaning and the creation of texture. Shot blasting is a technological process for cleaning metal surfaces. With its help, you can not only remove layers of rust, dirt, and scale, but also improve the characteristics of the material.

Safety requirements

Despite the fact that the inhabited shot blasting chamber is characterized by increased efficiency in processing metal workpieces, the procedure itself can pose a high risk to human health. During operation, dust and fine abrasives may be released. This can lead to serious respiratory diseases.

To prevent undesirable consequences for the body, it is necessary to take into account a number of safety requirements:

  1. Workplace for manual equipment. Under no circumstances should a receiver or compressor be installed in a location where the unit is operating. If the equipment is located in a specially designated area, the compressors must be separated from the work area.
  2. Requirements for chamber installations. In order for the camera equipment to work without any problems, it is necessary to carry out installation only on the territory of the production enterprise. It must be separated from the building to prevent contamination of all air mass present in the building. Regardless of the power that the automatic chamber has, at the design stage it is necessary to provide for the presence of a high-power ventilation system. Practice shows that some cleaning systems installed directly in the equipment require timely maintenance, and at the same time, over time, they cease to function fully.

Application of sandblasting chambers

Such chambers, as a rule, are intended for processing various surfaces with abrasive materials using the air-jet method.

Shot blasting chambers are very effectively used for removing rust, removing scale, degreasing all types of surfaces during building repairs, and so on.

The shot blasting chamber is very often used in the preparation of all types of surfaces for painting, during repair work at ship repair, energy and other industrial facilities.

Shot blasting equipment comes in two types - namely closed and open types of surface treatment:

The shot blasting machine is an open type, and the chambers are closed.

The latter are quite mobile and are very often used in concrete structures, or rather for cleaning their external and internal surfaces, or for simply “smoothing” the surface. Their main advantage is ease of operation and maintenance. With the help of these devices it is very easy to “deeply” clean the surface.

In addition, such devices are equipped with a water separator filter, which helps remove moisture from the compressed air, which in turn makes the work much more efficient.

Shot blasting systems are non-portable and are used exclusively in enterprises. This complex includes:

  • automatic collection of shot by machine;
  • separation of fractions from purification products;
  • chamber exhaust ventilation;

The entire technological process - collection of waste materials, their separation, dust removal, automatic transportation of waste - is carried out using one compact ventilation unit with a low noise level.

Equipment of all types is presented. Each shot blasting machine is manufactured based on the customer's wishes. We not only manufacture equipment, but also select the appropriate one, taking into account:

  1. the area of the room allocated for the camera or machine;
  2. type of cleaning;
  3. type of production;
  4. goals and objectives of the customer;
  5. area of products, etc.

Stages of operation of an installation with a closed shot cycle

  1. Shot under compressed air pressure is sprayed onto the surface to be treated
  2. Under the influence of gravity or inertia, the shot accumulates in the receiver
  3. The shot is then collected using a vacuum by the shot collection system
  4. After this, the collected fraction is purified
  5. And fed into an abrasive machine for reuse

Such systems operate on a closed cycle principle: supply of an air-abrasive mixture under pressure to the surface, subsequent collection of used abrasive using a vacuum, subsequent cleaning of it from dust and impurities, and reuse.

After hitting the surface to be treated (working cycle), the abrasive is sucked back by the collection system, cleaned from dust and impurities in a cyclone-type chamber and again fed into the abrasive jet.

An example of an abrasive blasting installation with a closed shot cycle.

During vacuum sampling, all spent abrasive and contaminants are removed. Therefore, the cleaning area is almost completely free of dust. This fact makes it possible to safely use such systems:

  • in places where people are present,
  • in specially protected natural areas,
  • near process equipment or processes sensitive to air pollution.
