Rules for using welding torches

The first step is to clean the welded areas to ensure a better connection and select the appropriate filler wire. Next, the current strength and wire feed speed are pre-regulated on the welding machine. Afterwards the speed of the gas mixture is adjusted. This parameter is selected empirically or by selecting the built-in program. Now you can proceed directly to welding.

The torch and filler wire are directed to the beginning of the weld. As the weld pool forms, the torch moves forward. When making vertical seams, choose the direction from bottom to top. This will make it easier to control the process, and the surface after hardening will be less deformed. In this case, the gas supply should be approximately 30% higher compared to the horizontal process.

Water or air cooling?

Air-cooled power cable burners are designed for a duty cycle of 60%, while water-cooled burners have a duty cycle* of 100%. If you plan to weld a lot and for a long time, to do surfacing, then we recommend that you take a water-cooled torch, or use an air-cooled torch, but not at maximum current.

Do not forget that during the welding process not only the power cable, but also the torch handle heats up. Remember that welding in a mixture (CO₂ and Argon) always heats up the torch more than just welding in CO₂.

PV* — Duration of switching on in a 10-minute cycle at maximum current. Example: The MP 15 torch can weld metals without stopping at a maximum current of 160 Amps for 6 minutes, where 4 minutes of the 10 minute cycle are required to cool the power cable. The lower the current on the burner, the longer it can work without interruption.

Important nuances

Working with gas requires a highly qualified welder, knowledge and compliance with safety rules. There are many nuances in the use of gas burners, here are the most important of them:

1. To start work, flammable gas is started first and only then oxygen. To extinguish the burner, it is the other way around: first, the oxygen is shut off, and then the flammable gas.

2. Gas burners are 2-stroke and 4-stroke. In the first case, to activate, you need to press and hold the start key. If you let go, the work stops. The operating principle of a 4-stroke torch is different: a short press of the button turns on the gas supply and activates the welding process; when pressed again, the gas stops flowing.

3. The diameter of the wire in the semi-automatic torch must exactly match the diameter of its guide inside the nozzle.

Maximum and minimum current?

For semi-automatic burners there is no concept of minimum current. Everything is regulated by your device, usually 10 or 20 Amps. But the maximum current is clearly indicated in the technical specifications for each burner, and we strongly recommend not to ignore this important parameter.

The maximum current for an air-cooled burner (MP 450) is 400 Amperes in mixed gases and 500 Amps in CO₂.

Water-cooled torch (MP 500) - can weld metals in a mixture of gases at a maximum current of 450 Amps and in CO₂ at a current of 500 Amps.

Ease of maintenance

All burner parts wear out sooner or later and require replacement.

welding torch equipment

The wearing parts of the mig torch include the nozzle, diffuser and contact tip.

. They are responsible for the passage of shielding gas and are the front zone of the welding system and directly affect the quality of the weld and the performance of the equipment.

For high-quality welding, it is necessary to periodically check the condition of the internal hole of the contact tip. It should not be excessively worn. You should also clean the inner surface of the welding nozzle and diffuser from splashes so that they do not interfere with the flow of shielding gas.

If anything is worn out, it should be replaced immediately. The “right” torch is compatible with universal consumables, not just proprietary brand consumables.

FUBAG provides a complete range of high quality universal consumables that are suitable for welding torches from most manufacturers.

That's all, now you are ready to make an informed choice of the tool you need. If you still have questions, watch the video on choosing a burner for a semi-automatic machine:

Torch weight and how it affects the welder

Burners can be divided into two types: for light production and for heavy industry. The standard classifier classifies burners up to 240 Amps as light industry, and burners from 240 Amps as heavy industry. On our website, the weight of the burner is indicated in full, along with the handle, cable and Euro adapter.

The higher the maximum welding current of the torch, the thicker the cross-section of the copper cable, and therefore the weight. For example, let’s compare two burners, the most popular MP 15 (3 meters) and the most industrial (air-cooled) MP 450 (3 meters) - the weight of the first is 1.6 kg, and the second is 3.7 kg. More than twice. The heavier the burner, the more difficult it is to control. Especially if the torch cable is in tension and not lying on the surface.

How to choose

When choosing a torch for a semi-automatic welding machine, you must first of all take into account the type of work planned and its duration. If the work is expected to be short-lived and under simple conditions, then it would be unnecessary to purchase expensive semi-professional and professional models.

For the same reasons, you should not choose torch options for a long-length semi-automatic welding machine with a Euro connector. They will not be as convenient as expected and will not pay off very soon. Plus, the cost of inevitably replaceable parts of such a burner is several times higher than the price of similar plug-in and more compact options.

Spare parts for a semi-automatic welding torch with a Euro connector are more expensive than similar ones for the plug type

In addition to those described above, other factors that influence the operation of a semi-automatic welding machine should be taken into account:

  • Possible weight of the device - if the work is supposed to be stationary in an equipped workshop or workshop, then this indicator is not critical. In the case of mobile operation and cramped conditions, the weight of both the device itself and the burner should be minimal.
  • Overall dimensions - do not strive for a long welding hose length. It must correspond to the tasks and place of work. If the length is excessive, there may be difficulties with its placement and maintaining integrity.
  • Strength and wear resistance - both the welding process itself and the accompanying operations with metal can lead to damage to the welding torch (most often its part - the welding sleeve). This must be taken into account when choosing a model.

If work is carried out in aggressive conditions, then extra strength to the burner will not hurt. In addition, the torch itself must protect the welder from inevitable heating and electric shock. The flexibility of the welding hose should not be at odds with its strength - even when working under stationary conditions, the torch moves very actively.

  • Convenience of the case and fastening - most often this is called ergonomics. It must be remembered that a welder works with a torch for at least three hours a day, and often for 4-5 hours . All this time he holds the burner. The quality of the seam and the amount of time spent on related operations - inspection and cleaning, changing burnt parts - depend on its convenience.

When purchasing a welding torch for semi-automatic machines, it is imperative to check the availability of certification documents. Otherwise, there is a risk of losing not only funds, but also putting the life and health of the welder in serious danger

Semi-automatic aluminum welding

Any of the presented torches can be used when welding aluminum. For correct operation, we recommend that you replace the steel guide channel with a Teflon channel. The Teflon channel has better sliding and is harder, which does not allow the aluminum wire inside the cable to twist and break.

In addition, when choosing a conductive tip for welding aluminum, we recommend following a simple rule: choose a tip diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the aluminum wire.

This is due to the fact that when leaving the tip, aluminum expands greatly and if the diameters match, the welding wire may stick in the tip.

Accessories for the burner.

The semi-automatic burner consists of:

  • Tip.
  • Nozzles
  • Mounting spring.
  • Nozzle holder.
  • Channel.

And during the use of the burner, these elements need regular cleaning and replacement. Please note that the diameter of the welding wire must correspond to the size of the tip. After completing welding work, pay attention to the appearance of small cracks on the nozzle; timely replacement of the nozzle can double the service life of the torch. The service life of burner consumables will be approximately 180-200 hours of continuous operation. Timely replacement of consumables will increase this time.

Our company GWC offers high-quality welding torches and always has a stock of consumable parts for them.

Criteria for a successful purchase of SG

Despite this, before purchasing a welding torch, it is recommended to determine the tasks for it, and then evaluate how feasible they are for a particular model. Only in this way can you make the right choice, which will subsequently affect productivity and profitability.

Welding torch

Quite often, buyers do not pay attention to the design of the product and consumables, and this is an important criterion when purchasing, since the quality of the weld, productivity and service life depend on them. In addition, in search of benefits, customers sometimes settle on little-known manufacturers who do not always provide a warranty card. Thus, failures and downtime cannot be ruled out. To avoid problems, it is more advisable to choose a model from a range of manufacturers with a good reputation, which guarantee flawless long-term operation and eliminate premature expenses for repairs. Moreover, the model does not have to be expensive. When assessing long-term investments in SG and its consumables, it is recommended to take into account the service life, costs of spare parts, the cost of downtime and maintenance, as well as the ease of replacing failed elements.

Welding tips

The tips are made of virgin copper. The holes for the wire are laser-cut, which ensures perfect contact and no sticking. When choosing a tip, pay attention to the thread type (M6 or M8).

The best torches for semi-automatic welding machines

If you have a semi-automatic machine that does not have a seamless connection of the cable duct to the body, then such a burner can be replaced with a more convenient one. To purchase, look for a product with a EURO plug designation. It is universal and fits any device with the same connector. It is not necessary to buy equipment of the same brand as your semi-automatic machine.

Burners 150-180 A

If a semi-automatic welding machine is used to join metal with a thickness of 0.8-7.0 mm, then a torch designed for a current of 150-180 amperes is sufficient.

MIG-150 BRIMA

Semi-automatic burner from a German manufacturer. Equipped with an ergonomic handle with several cutouts that fit well into the welder’s palm. The cable channel can accept wire from 0.6 to 1.0 mm. The length of the sleeve is 3 m, which is enough for a stationary welding station in the workshop. If you cook at a current of 150 A, then the on-time will be 60%. The Euro connector is equipped with a protruding relief, which facilitates connection to the welding machine. The accessory is cooled by air from the outside and gas from the inside.

The torch is notable for its elongated nozzle, which is suitable for welding with direct and reverse polarity (it heats up less). The angle of inclination of the gander is also minimal, which allows it to be inserted into pipes and welding in hard-to-reach places.

Foxweld 6068 MIG-15

This is a burner from an Italian manufacturer. It is suitable for semi-automatic welding in both shielding and active gas environments. Air cooling is implemented. The maximum current is 180 A. In this case, the duty cycle will be 40%. The accessory is compatible with wire 0.6-1.0 mm in diameter. But the burner with the cable channel weighs 2.4 kg, so at a height you will have to hold it with your second hand so as not to pull it away.

The model is notable for its sleeve length of 5 m. This is beneficial when working with large structures - you will need to move the device itself less often. Increased mobility of the welder allows you to quickly move from one product to another and even work alternately on two welding tables.

AURORA 12017 PRO MIG 15 AIR COOL

This burner has a wide rubber pad on top that prevents it from slipping out of your hands. The trigger location is separated so that other fingers do not move there. The hose package is thinner than other manufacturers and lighter. The channel length is 3 m, and the maximum current is allowed up to 180 A.

Judging by the reviews of welders, this model is quite comfortable to hold and work for 6-8 hours every day. It is also the most affordable. If you have a semi-automatic welding machine from a famous brand whose torch needs to be replaced, then here you can save money without losing quality.

FUBAG 38440 FB 150

This is a premium quality burner from a German brand. It has a sleeve length of 3 m and passes wire with a diameter of 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm. It can be cooked with a maximum current of no higher than 180 A, otherwise it will overheat and melt. The nozzle has two raised rings for easy removal of the tip.

The burner is expensive, but very convenient. It is appreciated by welders for its ergonomics. If you need to cook every day for 6 hours, then your hand will get less tired. The button is pressed very easily with one finger. The rubber pad on top prevents slipping in your hands.

VIKING 95588016 MIG 15AK-4m

At the end of the rating we placed a burner from an Austrian brand. It has an optimal operating current of 150 A, at which the on-time is allowed to be 60%. If necessary, you can weld for a short time at 180 A, but with longer cooling breaks. The 4 m sleeve length increases the mobility of the welder. The burner with the channel weighs 2 kg. It differs from most other models in the location of the rubber insert at the bottom, which prevents your fingers from slipping.

This product is suitable where you often have to change the position and weld vertical, ceiling and corner seams. To prevent the cable channel from bending, long spring inserts are provided at the entrance to the burner and in front of the Euro connector.

The best burners for 200-250 A

When it is necessary to weld parts with a thickness of 10-20 mm, it is necessary to increase the current strength using a semi-automatic machine. Accordingly, a burner is needed with a high current rating. Here is the rating of the best models of this level.

MS 24 Svarog ICT2698

MIG torch for welding in carbon dioxide and argon mixtures. With MIX gas, a current of 220 A is allowed, with carbon dioxide, 250 A is possible. In both cases, the duty cycle is 60%. The hose package, judging by the reviews, is quite flexible. Its length is 3 m. The burner is designed for air cooling. You can thread wire from 0.8 to 1.2 mm. The total weight of the product is 2.7 kg. The tip is massive and durable. But the long current lead makes it difficult to control the weld pool.

This model is interesting due to the presence of anti-slip pads on the top and bottom of the handle. This design is especially important for working on high structures (so as not to be dropped) or in hot conditions (outside in summer). The torch is also notable for its copper-coated gooseneck, which reduces the amount of sticking spatter from welding.

BRIMA MIG-250

Next is a burner from a German brand. According to reviews, customers like the product at an affordable price. The handle does not have rubber pads, but there are protrusions for the fingers. The anatomical shape relieves stress from the hand. The cable length here is 3 m. The wire diameter is allowed 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 mm. The maximum current is no more than 250 A. With this indicator, you can cook continuously for 6 minutes, and then let it cool for 4 minutes.

Note the powerful spring at the base of the connector and handle. It does not allow the channel to break during strong bending. The wire will feed continuously. The wires leading to the buttons (cable) will remain intact, despite the frequent kinks of the sleeve.

AURORA 12027 25 AIR COOL

Reliable semi-automatic burner with proven quality. Allows you to work with wire up to 1.2 mm in diameter. It has good heat transfer and supports semi-automatic welding with a current of 230 A. There is an anti-slip pad on the top of the handle. The gander is coated with chrome to reduce splash adhesion. The Euro connector with high edges is easy to insert into the socket on a semi-automatic device.

The model is notable for its cable channel length of 5 m. Thanks to this, the welder can walk around a large product without carrying the apparatus with a cylinder. With such a sleeve it is practical to weld metal structures at a construction site.

The rating of powerful burners for semi-automatic devices is completed by a product from a German manufacturer. The burner is extremely comfortable due to its anatomical shape and two rubber inserts. The jib angle is optimal for minimal wrist bending. The series is designed for a maximum current of 230 A. You can install a thin 0.8 mm wire for welding bodies, and a thick 1.2 mm wire for connecting workpieces with a cross-section of up to 20 mm.

The burner has a very sensitive start button. This helps when a semi-automatic machine is used for assembling critical structures that require numerous tacks. Pulling the trigger 1000 times a day does not tire you out. A flexible connecting element at the base ensures the torch's mobility when bending for welding in different spatial positions.

Welding torch device

When investing in a much-needed piece of welding equipment, a specialist takes the type of welding job performed and the capabilities of the semi-automatic machine as a basis. Moreover, when purchasing a burner, take into account its main components, which must be replaced over time.

Regardless of the manufacturer, the burner design includes:

  • body with burner neck (gander) – rarely needs to be replaced;
  • insulator - must be replaced either separately or with a gas nozzle;
  • diffuser (holder) – after long-term operation requires replacement due to the adhesion of welding spatter;
  • the nozzle is the most vulnerable place, susceptible to the negative effects of sticking pieces of metal;
  • The current tip is the most worn part of the torch, which must be changed periodically.

Ganders

Replacing the gander will save the cost of purchasing a new burner in case of mechanical damage to the product.
