How to calculate the weight of a channel?
The easiest way is to refer to GOST 8240-97 and find the required type and size in the table. Each element of the assortment has a theoretical weight of one meter. This value must be multiplied by the length of the product.
You can also calculate the mass of the channel without reference books, using the formula. First you need to find the cross-sectional area of the channel.

The calculation using the above formula does not take into account the radii of curvature of the channel corners.
A channel is a structural element made of metal, the cross section of which forms the letter “P”. It has walls with a shelf. In cross-section, the wall is a lintel, and the shelves act as walls. Channel length in production according to standards
The size of the channel supplied by the manufacturer is strictly regulated by the relevant state standard.
The range of hot-rolled channels for special and general purposes is given in GOST 8240-97. According to this regulatory document, the channel is manufactured in lengths from 2 to 12 meters. At the customer's request, it is possible to produce a U-shaped profile, the size of which exceeds 12 meters. It can be produced in measured and multiple measured lengths, as well as unmeasured. Important note! In accordance with GOST, one batch of measured or multiple lengths may contain up to 5% of the total mass of a channel of unmeasured length.
Bent equal-flange channel, its dimensions and maximum deviations are regulated by the interstate standard GOST 8278-83. In accordance with the requirements of this document, the length of the channel should be 3 - 11.8 meters. At the individual request of the customer, this profile can be manufactured in a size of 12 meters. The channel can be measured, unmeasured and a multiple of the measured length.
In addition, the presence of unmeasured segments is allowed in one batch, the mass of which should not exceed 7% of the total mass.

The calculation is made using the formula: M = ρ *L*s (2*b+h-2*t);
- where ρ is the density of the material;

- t – average flange thickness;

The designation according to GOST displays the distance in millimeters: between edges, edge width, metal wall thickness. For production, the standard steel used is St3ps-5 grade - the basis for the strength and indestructibility of metal structural parts. Hot-rolled models are produced from other suitable steel grades - carbon, high-alloy, atmospheric corrosion-resistant. 09G2S is often added to the St3 brand. The linear weight of channels should not exceed 6%
. Such regulations are prescribed in a state document. Taking into account the tolerances for maximum deviations in total, the weight of a meter of channel should not exceed 7-8%. If violations are noticed in the production regulations, then the metal profiles are considered unsuitable.
