I-beam is a profile that is most often used in construction due to its reasonable ratio of strength characteristics and weight. Each part of the H-shaped profile is located at right angles, so it resists bending well, resulting in a simple and lightweight structure in all directions. Most often used as a horizontal structural element - crossbars, beams, trusses, ceilings, etc.
Characteristics of an I-beam (General limits, Accuracy classification, Marking, etc.)
An I-beam consists of two horizontal planes, known as flanges, connected by a single vertical component or web. The shape of the shelves and the walls form a cross section in the shape of the letter “H”. Beams have different weights, profile thicknesses, flange widths, wall heights and other characteristics. The range of beams is marked according to the ratio of the shape and size of the profile and the height of the I-beam. For example, profile number 14B2 means that this is a normal I-beam with a height of 14 mm, the wall thickness and other parameters are described in GOST 26020-83.
The main technical documents containing tables of standard sizes of I-beams for various purposes are:
- For rental with parallel shelves: GOST 26020-83.
- For rolling with sloped shelves: GOST 8239-89, GOST 19425-74.
- For welded beams: TU U 01412851.001-95.
Steel I-beams, depending on the ratio of the size of the shelves to the wall, are divided into the following types: wide-flange (W), narrow-flange (U), medium-flange (D), normal (N), columnar (K). According to the production method, hot-rolled and welded (C) products are distinguished.
I-beams are produced in multiple, measured and unmeasured lengths in the range from 4 to 15 m.
Types of I-beams 30 and their main characteristics
Based on the slope of the internal edges of the shelves, I-beams are divided into 2 groups: with a slope of internal edges and with parallel edges.
I-beam number 30 with a slope of the internal edges of the shelves:
- General purpose metal products are produced in accordance with GOST 8239-89. The slope of the internal faces is in the range of 6-12%. Rolled metal is in demand in the construction of multi-storey civil and industrial facilities. It is used for constructing span structures and strengthening the foundations of large buildings.
- The special-purpose beam is manufactured in accordance with GOST 19425-74. I-beam 30M has a slope range of internal faces - 6-12%. The products are used for the installation of overhead roads. The slope in products 30C is up to 16%. The purpose of rolled metal with the letter “C” is to strengthen vertical and inclined capital mine workings.
The dimensions of the I-beam 30 with parallel flange edges are regulated by GOST 26020-83.
Application
I-beams are the most common and widely used beams. Rigid I-beam frame structures are one of the strongest and most stable forms of steel building structures. This makes it possible to erect tall multi-span buildings.
In addition to load-bearing elements in industrial and residential construction, I-beams are used for laying trolleybus and railway tracks, overpasses, bridges and other road structures. Wide-flange beams are most often used in residential construction. Part of the rolled products is sold for the needs of the engineering industry.
Types of rental:
- Normal - 30B1 and 30B2. Beam 30B2 has a more massive cross-section compared to beam B1 and can withstand greater loads.
- Wide flange - 30Ш1, 30Ш2, 30Ш3. Manufactured with increased width of shelves, used for creating columns and supports, for mounting guides. The higher the digital profile index, the more massive it is.
- Column - 30K1, 30K2, 30K3. In the cross section of these metal products, the height of the wall is equal (approximately or exactly) to the width of the shelf. The largest mass of 1 m in this series is the I-beam 30K3. Column series products are used for constructing columns and vertically positioned supports in the construction of multi-storey residential buildings and industrial facilities.
The regulatory document STO ASChM 20-93 was developed by the Association for Standardization of Products Manufactured at Ferrous Metallurgy Enterprises. It regulates the same types of I-beam number 30 as GOST 26020-83: normal, wide-flange, column. However, the section sizes vary slightly.

I-beams are divided into:
a) I-beams with parallel flange edges (GOST 26020, STO ASChM 20-93): - normal - B - wide flange - W - column - K
b) I-beams with a slope of the inner edge of the shelves: - ordinary - GOST 8239 (without letters): 10, 12,14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 40, 45, 50, 55 , 60. - special - GOST 19425 (M - monorail beam and C - for reinforcing mine shafts)
I-beams are manufactured in lengths from 4 to 13 m, depending on the standard and consumer requirements. The length can be measured, unmeasured and a multiple of measured. Welded beams are manufactured up to 16 m long. We produce them in warehouses in the cities of Lobnya, Kaluga and Tver.
According to the accuracy of beam manufacturing, the beam is rolled: increased (B) and normal accuracy (C) according to GOST 8239; high (A) and normal (B) accuracy according to GOST 19425.
Beams are made of steel classes: S245 (St3), S255 (St3Gps and St3Gsp), S345 (09G2S).
I-beams are used in construction for the manufacture of metal structures, for overhead tracks, for floors, for stadiums, bridge and car construction, etc.
I-beams made of steel 09G2S - structural low-alloy steel - are used for welded structures in the Far North at temperatures from minus 70 degrees C, and steel 09G2S can be used at the highest temperature of +450 degrees C. Beam 09G2S is used where increased strength is required, in construction for welded structures. The welded beam is intended for large metal structures to reduce their weight, but increase the span width. We produce welded beams in accordance with STO ASChM 20 and GOST 26020, according to St3 and St09G2S, we also issue a quality certificate for it.
The range of our produced welded beams: 35Sh3, 35K3, 30K3, 30Sh3, 40Sh2, 40Sh3, 45Sh1, 40K1- 40K5, 50B2, 50B3, 50Sh1-50Sh4, 60Sh1-60Sh4, 70B1, 70B2, 70Sh1-70Sh5 , 80B1, 80B2, 80Ш1, 80Ш2, 90Б1, 90Б2, 90Ш1, 90Ш2, 100Б1 - 100Б4, 100Ш1 - 100Ш4.
The main manufacturer of I-beams is the Nizhny Tagil Metallurgical Plant.
