A device for drilling holes for dowels at the end of a board or chipboard

Conductor

It is almost impossible to drill holes for dowels in the end of a board or chipboard slab without tools. I came to this conclusion through trial and error.

I am a complete layman in the art of furniture making. It turned out that the most common fastening element is a furniture dowel with a diameter of 8 mm.

In the manufacture of furniture, dowels are used as fastening elements.

Wooden furniture dowels.

Dowels come in various lengths and diameters.

Table of sizes of furniture edgings produced by industry.

Having decided to make a device for drilling holes for dowels, I took: - a strip of aluminum 4 mm thick, 18 cm long, 18 mm wide; — 2 threaded steel rivets M5x13mm; - connector housing for a halogen lamp (tube made of unknown metal, with an internal diameter of 8 mm and an M10x1.0 thread at one end; - 2 M5 bolts.

To make the device, I needed the following tools: - a drill with a diameter of 5 mm; — drill with a diameter of 9 mm; — M10x1.0 tap with holder; — drill (it is advisable to use a drilling machine); — core. Having started making a device for drilling holes for dowels, I made a drawing in the Compass-3D LT V12 program with marks for the centers of 3 holes that I would have to drill.

Drawing

I couldn’t resist and drew a drawing of the product, although there was no urgent need to create a drawing of the device. Working in Compass-3D LT V12 is very comfortable.

Compass-3D program screen with a drawing.

Drawing.

Looking at the drawing, you can realize that using the device you can drill an 8 mm hole in the center of the board. Moreover, the board should not be thicker than 50 mm.

Then I printed and pasted the design onto an aluminum plate.

Aluminum plate with a pasted pattern.

Next, I marked three holes with a core and drilled two of them with a 5mm drill bit.

Hole punching.

I drilled the central hole with a 9 mm drill, then cut the thread with an M10x1.0 tap. I determined the diameter of the drill from the table:

The simplest table for choosing the diameter of a threaded hole.

Cutting threads in a plate.

Now I screw the connector housing for the halogen lamp into the central threaded hole and cut off the protruding part of the connector housing.

You will have to grind off the threaded part of the connector body.

Screw in the guide for the drill. We install threaded rivets with bolts. The device is ready.

Ready device.

The device is in working position.

As a result, I received an acceptable result. Of course, it was not very convenient to work.

It turned out that if you cut an M6x1.0 thread in the outer holes. And then screw M6 bolts 60-70 mm long into these holes. Then we will get a more convenient device.

A more advanced and technological version of the device for drilling holes for dowels at the end of a board or chipboard.

Good luck!

Main types

Based on the type of design and functionality, devices used for adding (drilling) holes in elements of furniture structures may fall into one of the following categories.

Invoices

These are jigs that are applied to the surface of the workpiece and either fixed on it or held in a given position by hand. Using such a device for making furniture, holes are made in flat parts (for example, in slabs made of chipboard or MDF).

Rotary

The working bar of such conductors can rotate in both horizontal and vertical planes. Using this device, you can make holes in parts of complex geometric shapes. Such a jig is used for drilling holes whose axis is located at an angle.

Universal

These are reconfigurable jigs for making furniture. It is advisable to use devices of this type in production shops that produce furniture in small batches. The versatility of such jigs for furniture production lies in the fact that they can be quickly reconfigured to different combinations of the location of the holes being made.

Tiltable

Conductors of this type are used in cases where it is necessary to drill holes in several planes.

In addition, more highly specialized jig devices are actively used in furniture production (in particular, a dowel jig for assembling furniture and a device that makes it possible to accurately and efficiently make holes for confirmations).

Using a jig when drilling the end of furniture boards will protect you from accidental drift of the drill to the side and, as a result, damage to the workpiece

According to the method of fixation on the surface of the workpiece, jigs are divided into sliding and fixed type devices. Devices that are fixed to the part before processing, although more convenient to use, somewhat limit the freedom of action of the master. This is especially critical in cases where drilling is performed on a machine equipped with a single spindle mechanism.

Using a jig, it is possible to avoid a rather serious problem: the drill entering the surface of the workpiece at the wrong angle. Coping with this problem, if it has already arisen, is quite difficult, and in many cases simply impossible. When using a jig, the drill not only enters the material being processed at the required angle, but also does not deviate from the specified direction throughout the entire drilling process. You cannot do without a jig in cases where it is necessary to drill a hole at a certain angle in thin furniture boards made of chipboard or MDF.

Some drilling operations (for example, making oblique holes) simply cannot be done without special tools

Setting up the production of furniture with your own hands, if you use conductors in such production, is possible even for a person who is not highly qualified and does not have sufficient experience in this field. When using such devices, there is no need to perform complex preliminary calculations and mark out locations for future holes.

Almost all types of such devices have a simple design, so making your own conductor is not so difficult.

Universal conductor

A convenient device with a well-thought-out metal design and a set of necessary accessories, which allows you to quickly drill holes not only for dowels and confirmats, but also for eccentric ties (mini-fixes). The conductor is equipped with a screw clamp and does not require additional fixation with a clamp.

Kinds

There are several types of jigs or templates for drilling, depending on the specifics of their use, design and scope of application.

By purpose

By area of use, conductors are:

  • Furniture - designed for assembling furniture, drilling holes in furniture blanks, etc.
  • For drilling pipes - the design features allow you to drill cylindrical surfaces.
  • For working on tiles and tiles - often equipped with a water supply device to avoid overheating when working with diamond drills.
  • For crowns - the templates on the jig are designed for drilling with crowns, and not with standard drills and drills.
  • Universal - can be equally used for any job, withstands both wood and metal drills. Most often, the sleeves are made of steel.

By design

There are several common drilling template designs:

  • Overlays - used for horizontal surfaces. They can be equipped with a lock, or without it - in this case, you need to additionally use a clamp. Some types of overhead jigs have an additional suction cup.
  • Rotary - a more versatile type that can be used for cylindrical parts and surfaces. Holes can be drilled in horizontal, vertical planes, and at different angles.
  • Sliding is a slide type hole scriber that does not require a locking device. Used in places where the template is impossible or difficult to fix.

Guide for installing accessories

A special template for drilling holes necessary for attaching handles to doors and drawers without preliminary marking. The top and side stops are installed along the edges of the part and aligned with rulers. Then all that remains is to move the movable bushings to the required distance and drill holes.

Design and types

So, we figured out that a jig is a template strip, the main purpose of which is to ensure accuracy when drilling holes in a variety of materials.

There are two types of conductors:

  • A jig designed for drilling holes located perpendicular to the surface of the product.
  • A jig made for drilling holes at an angle. It allows you to make a hole at the desired angle.

But this is a very rough and generalized classification. In fact, there are more types of conductors, differing in their design and purpose. In particular, the following types of these devices are distinguished.

Invoices

As you can easily guess from their name, such jigs are applied to the surface of the part or workpiece to be processed. They can be secured with special clamps or simply held with your hand while working.

Rotary

These are specially made templates that are intended for processing cylindrical workpieces. With the help of such jigs, it becomes possible to make not only perpendicular holes, but also to drill holes at different angles, since the rotating devices are equipped with special bushings that allow the jig to be installed at different tilt axes.

Universal

Here too the name literally speaks for itself. These drilling jigs are suitable for most types of work (except for specialized ones), so they are loved by workers in small industries, and even by those who do work at home.

Sliding

This type of jigs does not require their attachment to the surface in which the hole needs to be drilled. You just need to hold them with your hand (which can often not be very convenient).

Pinned

Unlike the previous type, such jigs are rigidly attached to the workpiece being processed. Although it is more convenient to work with, this type of device limits freedom of action.

Tiltable

And the last type of conductors is quite similar to the universal type. They are used when it is necessary to drill in different planes or at an angle.

Conductor for guides

A convenient template with which you can quickly and easily attach guides for drawers without fussing with markings. To do this, you just need to install the jig at the desired height, fix it with a vertical stop, and then put the guide on top and secure it. In the same way, the second part is mounted opposite.

Scope of application

Jigs designed for drilling holes are widely used in furniture manufacturing, but their use is by no means limited to this industry.

Let's take a closer look at where this useful device is used.

Furniture manufacture

When making furniture, it is constantly necessary to drill holes for accessories, fasteners, and fittings. After all, it’s enough to make a mistake with the hole by literally a couple of millimeters, and the cabinet or bedside table will turn out skewed during assembly. The finished product will have to be thrown away or it is unlikely to be sold.

Therefore, jigs are simply necessary in the production of furniture, because they “correct” the incorrect angle of the drill entering the part. Also, when assembling furniture, a jig for drilling holes for dowels or a template for drilling holes for confirmation has proven itself to be excellent.

Mechanical engineering

Here, jigs are used for drilling holes in a variety of workpieces made of various materials. Since everything is standardized in this industry, the slightest discrepancy in dimensions leads to rejection of the part. Therefore, there is simply no way to do without conductors in this area.

Construction

During any construction work, you always have to make holes in walls, ceilings, and fasten various parts. If you do not use templates, the drilling process will be delayed, since it is much more difficult to make holes in the walls or ceiling at exactly the right angle. Therefore, builders often use a jig to drill holes at an angle.

Serial or mass production

Mass production requires unification of components. Accordingly, conductors will come in handy here too. When using these tools, you are confident that all holes will be the same.

Household use

Every home needs repairs from time to time. In this case, you often have to pick up a drill and make holes in walls or furniture, and here, just like air, conductors will be needed.

Angle clamps
