Pendulum saws: features of choice, tips for self-assembly

engine's type

Modern pendulum saws operate on the basis of commutator and asynchronous motors. The first option has decent power, but contains carbon brushes that are subject to gradual abrasion. Asynchronous models last much longer and produce less noise. True, such motors may not be installed on all pendulum saws.

Saw selection

To choose a unit, you need to decide on the technical characteristics that it must meet. Need to know:

  1. What is the rated power of the installation?
  2. Belt or gear drive.
  3. Is it possible to adjust the number of revolutions and what is their maximum number.
  4. What is the size of the outer and landing diameter of the disk.
  5. Dimensions of the structure and its weight.
  6. The dimensions of the workpieces and the type of material with which you will have to work.
  7. Is the cutting block movable in relation to the product?
  8. What are the dimensions of the built-in vice for fastening workpieces?

If you plan to purchase a cutting machine, then you need to know the type of CNC unit. This affects the quality of the machine.

Device Models

The market for modern electrical equipment is diverse. To work comfortably with any material you need to have good equipment. When choosing it, it is better to focus on the ratings of manufacturers and models, as well as user reviews.

Professional electric tools from the Japanese company Makita Corporation are very popular on the market. Today, Makita's assortment includes more than a thousand items of various types of tools, including saws.

Reliable and compact model Makita LC 1230. It has a powerful motor, a dust collection filter, and a carbide saw blade with a carbide edging. The blade has an increased service life; the material cut made by this element of the saw is obtained without burrs or burns. By disconnecting the protective cover and removing the lock from the spindle, the disc can be easily replaced. Technical parameters of the model:

  • engine - 1.75 kW;
  • speed - 1300 rpm;
  • disc blade - 305 mm;
  • depth and width of cut - 115 mm.

There are other models from this company with other technical characteristics. For example, Makita 4131 - for cutting steel, Makita 2414 NB - for vertical cutting of ceramics, stone, PVC, metal.

Highly professional equipment includes Mac model saws, manufactured by a company from the UK. They are distinguished by good assembly, as they are equipped with elements from European manufacturers. For example, the Mac NEW 350 S model is a professional unit with a large saw blade, capable of working with large workpieces. The gearbox of this device is contained in an oil bath, which increases its service life. The engine power is 2.2 kW, the width and depth of the cut is up to 120 mm, the maximum speed reaches 3000 per minute, the blade is 350 mm. The motor in such machines is three-phase.

There are other models of saws available on the market for professional electric tools.

Cutting width

The most important indicator that depends on several factors: the design features of the saw and the parameters of the saw blade. The larger the diameter of the latter, the wider the cut.

If we talk about the design, then in some pendulum saws the disk moves exclusively in the vertical plane. More functional models contain horizontal guides, thanks to which you can move the cutting blade back and forth.

If we compare pendulum saws with and without guides, then with an identical saw blade diameter, in the first case the maximum cutting width will be several times larger.

Types of equipment

Construction and industry require high labor productivity and high-quality cutting operations for various types of materials. An important requirement is equipment mobility. Pendulum saws meet all these indicators.

Pendulum saw for metal

Mechanical cutting allows you to avoid thermally affecting metal. It does not lead to a change in the composition of the metal alloy and does not impair its performance characteristics. The ideal equipment for this type of cutting is a pendulum saw.

The cutting tool of this type of equipment can be a tipped carbide or an abrasive disc. When the drive with the rotating disk is lowered onto the workpiece, metal is cut. These saws are safer than hand cut-off tools. They have high cutting quality and low consumption of saw blades.

Depending on the power of the equipment and the type of saw blade, a metal miter saw is used to work with ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

In practice, such a saw is used when cutting steel rods, angles and fittings. In window production, it is used to cut aluminum profiles.

Wood sawing tool

This device can be classified as a circular saw. It can be a good helper when sawing wood. Basically, it produces transverse cutting of wood, trimming timber or boards at an angle of 90º. The movements of the saw during operation resemble the swing of a pendulum.

The advantage of such equipment is the ability to monitor the quality of the operation and see the cutting line during operation, this is especially important when there was no preliminary marking of the workpiece.

At the same time, the disadvantage of the saw is the limited width of the sawn workpiece. In addition, the sawing operation requires physical effort.

In such models, the disk blade has significant diameters - from 500 mm to 650 mm. This makes it possible to saw wide boards. The wider the board, the more effort required to cut. At the same time, the quality of the cut decreases, and the loss of wood during cutting increases.

Pendulum cutting machine

Cutting machines are understood as machines that process workpieces for a long time and in large volumes.

There are 2 types of units:

  1. With one cutting tool.
  2. With two cutting tools.

Pendulum machines are the most common. They are easy to operate and preferable in price.

Abrasive cutting machines are similar in operating principle to pendulum saws. They are used for cutting profiles or metal sheets. In production, they are used to remove excess rolled products and cut long products into small pieces. The machine cuts metal at an angle from 0° to 45°.

The machine is bulky in size and has additional accessories:

  • pumping unit for cooling the cutting site with water;
  • adaptation to the vacuum cleaner system;
  • deburring equipment.

The choice of model depends on the tasks that the user sets for himself.

Amateur or professional instrument?

It is worth noting that the purpose of both categories of devices is aimed at implementing the same tasks. A professional pendulum saw for metal or wood differs from an amateur one only in the quality of assembly, materials of manufacture and the possibility of non-stop operation over a longer period of time. Conventional household models have a smaller margin of safety, insufficiently precise fit of structural elements, but are an order of magnitude cheaper.

Features of operation

For ease of use, it is recommended to pre-install a production table or workbench. It is desirable that such a table be height-adjustable and have sufficient area for storing workpieces and sawn parts.

Even for compact home models, the desktop area should be around 8 square meters. m. Approximate size - 2x4 meters. This allows you to cut workpieces up to 3 meters in size.

When using a pendulum saw, be sure to ensure safety, close the protective curtains and use personal protective equipment. This is very important, because when cutting wood or metal, small wood or metal shavings fly out from under the working wheel. When cutting metal workpieces, flammable liquids and materials should be removed from the workbench, as hot metal particles can cause a fire.

DIY pendulum saw

It is not at all necessary to spend money on purchasing an expensive factory-assembled pendulum device. If you have some experience, tools and components, it is possible to make a fairly effective and functional saw with your own hands.

Assembly will require a single-phase motor with a power of about 340 W. You can remove it from the old electric sharpener. As a transmission, it is enough to use a car V-belt.

The basis of a homemade pendulum saw should be a spinal frame with square-section posts. On one side, a platform for mounting the engine is welded to the frame, and on the other, a spindle housing. The frame should contain a round opening through which the pipe is passed, which will act as the swing axis of the cutting device.

When starting welding work, it is necessary to ensure that the axis of the motor shaft, spindle and swing element are parallel. Upon completion, be sure to clean the seams, prime the surfaces and paint them with nitro enamel, which will significantly increase the service life of the unit.

The basis for the manufacture of the abrasive disc casing and belt can be taken from sheet steel with a thickness of at least 2 mm. It is recommended to weld the structure using a fillet weld from the inside. The resulting casing is statically fixed to the frame. Once assembly is complete, the pendulum saw motor should be below the spindle level. If the engine weight is insufficient during operation, the disc abrasive may hit the workpiece and crumble, which can result in injury.

Be sure to protect the power cable from possible mechanical damage. A flexible metal shower hose is suitable for this. Finally, it is necessary to ground the saw body and the electric motor.

Pendulum mini circular saw with longitudinal stroke

And again, I greet you, dear country house builders and enthusiasts who are renovating a house, apartment or cottage.

Today we will talk again about a circular saw that you can easily make at home. The basic version of manufacturing our circular saw was outlined in an article posted at: Do-it-yourself circular saw

For those who are not very familiar with the question of what a pendulum circular saw is. Let's explain in a nutshell. A circular saw for wood is an electrical equipment where the main cutting tool is a saw blade. In addition to a machine with a fixed disk, the concept of a “circular saw” also includes a pendulum circular saw. It differs from a classic circular saw with a fixed disk in the mobility of the working disk, which is fed to the material fixed for processing.

Let's try to slightly change our circular saw. And through the changes, we will achieve a significant increase in the functionality of this equipment. Namely, setting the working longitudinal stroke of the cutting tool; in our case, the longitudinal stroke will be approximately 350 mm.

A homemade pendulum mini circular saw, provided it is carefully and correctly assembled, will always perform high-quality sawing of your material and will have a service life that is practically not inferior to factory-made models. By replacing the circular blade with a cutting blade for metal, the saw can also work great on metal.

As we already mentioned in the last article, purchasing this equipment is quite expensive and if you, not a professional builder, it makes sense to make this machine for your needs at home, in the end we will get a budget version of a good machine for home use. Making a pendulum mini circular saw is not at all difficult, a task that a novice home craftsman can handle while working, focusing on accuracy and precision in manufacturing. As usual, we produced a test version of the product. Incl. You select sizes and materials according to your capabilities and needs.

Based on materials:

You will find wooden blocks, buttons, electrical cables, screws, and bolts in any hardware store or your garage. Three parts, an electric motor, a circular disk and a shank for the motor shaft, can be purchased in the online store; we will place a link to these parts under the video clip posted on the YouTube channel.
