Decoding steel: Letter St. indicate that the steel is of ordinary quality, although most steels are high quality. The numbers from 0 to 6 are the conventional brand number depending on the chemical composition and mechanical properties. Other features of the chemical composition

For the St5Gps brand, the carbon content is strictly specified, the amount of which should be in the range of 0.22–0.3%. In carbon steels of ordinary quality, grades 2, 3 and 4, which are classified as boiling steel and intended for the production of long and shaped steel, the silicon content can be up to 0.07%. For steel alloys of grade St3, which are classified as calm, semi-quiet and boiling, the minimum carbon content is not standardized. It is important that their mechanical characteristics meet all GOST requirements.

If sheet metal with a sheet thickness of up to 10 mm is produced from carbon steels of ordinary quality St3, St4 and St5, corresponding to any degree of deoxidation, then, in accordance with the provisions of the regulatory document, a reduction in the amount of manganese in their chemical composition is allowed by 0.1%.

Hot-rolled channel is made from structural carbon steel of ordinary quality St3ps, containing manganese in the range of 0.4–0.65%

In carbon alloys of the semi-quiet category, the standard allows a reduction in the amount of silicon if they are deoxidized using titanium, aluminum or a mixture of these elements with ferrosilicon.

The chemical composition of ordinary quality carbon steels, which are produced using the so-called scrap technology, can contain up to 0.35% nickel and chromium, and no more than 0.4% copper. St3 grade steels produced using this technology should contain no more than 0.2% carbon.

The standard allows the following deviations in the chemical composition of carbon steels of ordinary quality:

  • sulfur and phosphorus: steel alloys of semi-calm and calm types - up to +0.005%, boiling - up to +0.006%;
  • carbon: semi-quiet and calm alloys – from –0.02 to +0.03%, boiling – ±0.03%;
  • silicon: semi-quiet and calm alloys - from –0.02 to 0.03% (for boiling ones, deviations in the content of this element are not allowed);
  • nitrogen: steel alloys corresponding to any degree of deoxidation – +0.02%;
  • manganese: semi-quiet and calm alloys – from –0.03% to +0.05%, boiling – from –0.04 to +0.05%.
