Review of the 11 best laser levels for the home DIYer

In construction and repair work, laser technology has replaced the usual level. Over time, such a tool became available not only to professionals, but also to mere mortals. If you are interested in buying a level, then from this article you can learn a lot of useful tips regarding choosing laser levels. We invite you to evaluate the capabilities of the most successful models included in our small rating.

Point, linear or rotary?

All laser levels, depending on their design, are divided into four groups:

  • point. This group includes the simplest equipment, and based on the name it is already clear - it is only capable of constructing points. The simplest ones are one, but there can be two or three. Models of levels of this type are used to solve simple problems: markings for fastenings for shelves, pictures, and can also be used when covering walls with wallpaper;
  • linear. Such devices are projected onto the surface of the line. If there are two of them, then they form a crosshair. But there may be more such lines and, of course, with their number the functionality and cost of the device increases. They are often called plane builders, because... with their help, markings can be applied directly to the floor, walls and ceiling, thereby forming a single workspace. This is very convenient when several people are working on site at once. This segment contains professional-grade levels that can be used at almost all stages of construction or renovation. For most people, their benefits become obvious when tiling or drywalling;
  • rotary. If linear type devices can project beams only at an angle of 180°, then rotary devices can form markings at 360°. By installing such a device indoors or on a construction site, you can cover a larger area than using linear builders. These functional levels are expensive and are mainly used by professionals.
  • combined. It is often necessary to combine the functions of several types of laser levels at once - this is how rotary levels appear with the ability to construct additional lines and points. It is not surprising that these are the most expensive devices.

What is a level

To carry out markings, take measurements and make accurate calculations, use a special device - a level. The device is designed for leveling, that is, determining protruding points of the plane’s height and differences. This is where the name level comes from.

A level is a tool used in construction and geodesy to determine the elevation of protruding surface areas and study the terrain.

Application options for the measuring device:

  • installation of structures and technical structures;
  • creation of high-precision geodetic structures, design;
  • leveling large areas, decorating the area;
  • construction and repair work indoors;
  • forecasting the amount of subsidence of buildings.

In everyday life, the tool is used for any repair work, be it laying floors or installing ceilings.

Levels project laser beams, so they are used to mark corners, brickwork, rows of tiles and other finishes, including wallpaper.

You cannot do without a building level when laying communications, for example, an electrical network indoors. Using a level, determine the location of switches, sockets, and safety panels.

What characteristics are important?

By tradition, we will summarize all the most important parameters in one small table and try to describe each of them.
Characteristics and capabilities of laser levels

Comparison criterionVarietiesNote
Temperature Rangefrom -10 to +40 °C and from 5 to 40 °CModels with a narrower operating temperature range are designed to operate at positive temperatures. If the room is unheated or the object is located outdoors, then in winter it is worth using levels with a wider range that covers negative temperatures. The latest devices are structurally more complex and therefore more expensive.
Rangefrom 2 to 50 m (without receiver) and up to 50-200 m (with receiver)For indoor work, equipment of the first type is sufficient. It is cheaper and uses less battery power than levels that shoot at 50 m and beyond (with a beam receiver). The latter are used purely in professional activities on large objects, for example, when building a house and pouring large areas.
Accuracy*deviation from 0.1 mm/m or moreThe most high-precision instruments (0.1-0.2 mm/m) are used in the construction industry when working over long distances, where a deviation of a few millimeters can be catastrophic. For finishing, equipment with an accuracy of 0.3 mm/m to 0.8 mm/m is suitable.
Number and direction of raysfrom one or more, vertical/horizontalThe most common solution is two beams forming a crosshair. The more rays, the more convenient the marking. It is important that the manufacturer provides for the function of each laser to operate separately.
Mounting type1/4″, 5/8″Defines the thread for attaching to a tripod or holder. There are models with two types of fastening. In most cases, adapters can be used.
Beam colorRed GreenDevices with a red laser are the most common solution, but green projections are more visible, and the difference is especially noticeable in good lighting. However, such devices are more expensive, require more power and can only operate at positive temperatures.
FunctionalitySelf-levelingBy default, in conventional models, before work, you need to level the device using the bubble level built into it. The self-leveling or self-leveling function allows you to control the progress of this leveling using automation. Devices with this function, if they deviate from the correct position by more than 3-4 degrees, emit a sound signal or cause the laser beam to blink. Before these values, it itself reaches the horizon.
Self-shutdownTo save battery power, the level turns off after some time.
+range finderAllows you not only to mark, but also to use a laser beam to measure length.

* Any measuring equipment has a limit of measurement accuracy (error). Checking the accuracy is very simple: just install the device at a distance of 1 m from the wall, make a mark on the line, then move the level another meter and make another one. The distance between the first and second marks should not exceed the passport value.

Our rating includes the most popular devices from well-known manufacturers of measuring equipment. There was a place here for both simple, inexpensive devices and high-precision products for professional use. All prices are for comparison purposes only.

How to choose a self-leveling laser level

Even the simplest repair will not be complete without the use of a building level. Previously, in the old fashioned way, all kinds of hand-made plumb lines, stretched threads, and water bottles were used. Now the need for such applied creativity has disappeared completely, because laser levels have appeared on the construction market. These are unique devices that allow you to carry out any construction work with high precision. How to choose a self-leveling laser level? What characteristics should you pay attention to first? We need to figure it out.

Using a self-leveling laser level.

Bosch Quigo II – from RUB 3,000.

First of all, I would like to praise the manufacturer for creating this compact device at a more than reasonable price. It’s not for nothing that it’s called a pocket builder, because the Bosch Quigo II is a cube with 6.5 cm sides and weighs only 250 g. It comes in a metal box with a universal mount. By the way, the level itself has a hole with a 1/4″ thread, i.e. You can use almost any photo tripod for installation. This baby is powered by two AAA batteries. There is a self-leveling function within 4 degrees; it can be disabled to solve other problems. Exceeding the limit is accompanied by a light signal.

In general, it’s a must-have in any home - it’ll come in handy to hang wallpaper correctly, work on drywall, and lay tiles.
Among the nuances, one can note a rather low accuracy, so it is better to use the device at a short distance from the marking plane - the further away, the thicker the line will be, and the worse it will be visible. Well, you can only use two lines at once - you cannot turn off one of them. Technical specifications Bosch Quigo II

Condtrol MX2 – from 5000 rub.

An interesting solution is implemented in the Condtrol MX2 model with Russian roots, but made in China. This compact device builds only two lines, but what makes it really good is that it works for up to 30 hours on two AA batteries and has five different mounting options: strap, self-tapping screw, clamp, magnet, tripod. Despite the relatively small beam angle, it is more than enough for renovations in an apartment or small construction site.

The device can be called semi-professional, because
it allows the use of a special receiver that increases the projection range. Lines can be built separately, which also simplifies work and saves battery. The durable, reinforced body, as well as the ability to install the device on 1/4″ and 5/8″ tripods, make this device truly indispensable in any man’s tool kit. Emitters

Laser level light sources are quite powerful LEDs. They generate monochromatic light. Typically, in professional and amateur devices, the rays are red or green, which are visible quite clearly at a distance of more than 40 meters. Installed LEDs do not heat up, use a minimum of electrical energy and do not shine worse over time.

On a note! The green beam is brighter and is better visible when working during the day, especially at long distances without the use of a special receiver.

The best line laser levels

Line builders are a more advanced version of levels. Essentially, they create a plane of a certain size. Using such levels, users can display straight lines on various surfaces within the range of the device. Linear solutions can be used both for construction tasks and for finishing work. The effective range of linear models is usually limited to 20 meters, but thanks to receivers it can be increased. For indoor work, it is convenient when the level can create both horizontal and vertical lines, as well as display a “cross” on the ceiling.

DEKO LL12-HVR

The category opens with one of the best laser levels in terms of the quality of beam construction from DEKO - model LL12-HVR. In 3D mode, this device can project 12 lines (4 per window). The operating range of the device without using a target is 30 meters. On brightly lit objects, this indicator can decrease significantly, but special glasses will help to partially avoid this effect. The self-leveling laser level (angle no more than 3 degrees) operates from a battery.

Advantages:

  • bubble level;
  • swivel base;
  • measurement range;
  • work in 3D mode;
  • carrying bag;

There are foam inserts around the entire perimeter of the bag, so if it falls, neither the level nor its contents will be damaged. The range of the device without a target is 20 meters (with appropriate lighting), and with a receiver it increases to 40. The cost of a 2D Basic Level level in Russian retail starts at 4,500 rubles.

Advantages:

  • precise fine lines;
  • cheaper than competitors;
  • you can build oblique lines;
  • complete bag;
  • possibility of micro-tuning;
  • swivel base.

Level design

This device is equipped with a durable plastic housing that protects it from dust, dirt and moisture. For normal operation of the device, it requires a special tripod or a flat surface.

Currently, there are two types of laser levels:

  1. Plasma models. They have built-in special prisms through which diode light passes. The number of lines depends on the number of these same prisms. For example, a level with two prisms will produce a vertical and horizontal line. Devices in this group are most often used in everyday life because they are characterized by a short range of the light beam.

  2. Rotary levels. This equipment is already considered professional and is used in large-scale construction. The long range of the beams is due to the operation of a rotating diode that projects the light.

Rotary levels, as a rule, have more functionality than plasma levels. These devices allow you to designate circular sectors and level doorways. However, a wide selection of functions, of course, affects the price of the device.

There is another type of building levels - point levels. But it is not very convenient to use.

KAPRO 888 – from 9300 rub.

The Israeli builder KAPRO 888 is suitable for working in large rooms and open areas. The dust-protected housing reliably preserves the device’s contents, which are capable of projecting two verticals and one horizontal. Each line can be turned off. On one charge, the device operates for no more than 8 hours due to the high radiation power; it is powered by three AA batteries. The kit includes a case, glasses, a device for mounting on a tripod, as well as batteries and a wall holder.

Despite the minimal set of functions, it is often used in their work by professional finishers who value this technique for its thin, clear line even over long distances.

ADA Cube 360 – from 10,000 rub.

ADA Cube 360 belongs to the category of compact professional laser levels. This is a rotary type device that is capable of marking the entire room horizontally at once and creating one vertical line. Among the advantages are the abundance of functions (self-leveling, shutdown when inactive), a wide operating temperature range, long range and the ability to work in conjunction with a receiver. The durable case with rubber gaskets reliably protects the contents from shock and vibration. It is only one and a half times larger than the previously reviewed “cube” from Bosch, but its capabilities are much wider. For example, it has two 1/4″ mounting threads at once. Power is provided by standard AA type sources in the amount of 3 pieces.

The manufacturer offers four configurations at once.
The simplest one includes only the device and batteries (Basic Edition). You can buy a version with glasses, a mount and a case, which will cost about 500-1000 rubles. more expensive (Home Edition). Laser levels - what are they?

Find out more in the online store “All Tools” =>>

If you look at the prices of these measuring instruments, you might be surprised - the range ranges from $20 to $860. Yes, yes, everything is not so simple when choosing a particular model. A tool with different capabilities and accuracy cannot have the same price tag.

Please note that with such a device, most repairs become much easier and require fewer adjustments.

To choose a laser level, you first need to decide on the type of work for which you want to use it. We will select the ideal laser level to meet these requirements. They come in these types:

  • Point (axis builders).

    Such devices can display from three to five different points on planes. But they cannot construct planes or illlines. You will only be able to see points, but from a great distance (for clarity, the principle of operation can be compared to a laser pointer).

They can be used on large areas to correctly transfer marks. This type of tool is useful when marking wallpaper, for fastening pictures, shelves, etc.

For more serious operations, the tool is simply not suitable.

  • Crossliners (line builders).

    They are also sometimes called plane builders, since they can form planes of certain sizes (it all depends on the scan angle).

When working with such a device, a straight line is formed on a plane that is in the range of the level. This is what is needed in construction work.

Typically, the range is up to 20 meters, but it can be increased (if there is a mode for working with the receiver). This is convenient for rooms where you need to form vertical and horizontal lines, as well as make a “cross” on the ceiling or floor.

Due to the sweep of the rays, the line can only be displayed on those parts of the room to which the level is directed. To obtain marks on the other side, you will need to unfold the device.

  • Rotary devices (plane builders).

    They have the same set of functions as the crossliner, but the plane rotates 360 degrees. For this, a very complex system is used, which will significantly affect the price.

Such tools are justified only when they are purchased for professional activities (prices start at $400). It is not suitable for use in domestic construction work.

Thanks to this short excursion, it will be easier for you to choose the device that is right for you. For most people, a line builder is needed.

Main technical characteristics

To choose a laser level for your home, you need to be guided by at least the basic characteristics, the minimum and maximum values that will determine the capabilities and available operations. There are five main characteristics that are key and determine all the capabilities of the device.

  • Number of rays

The most common models will give you one or two beams.
For some types of work this is quite enough - for example, for finishing, marking ceilings and walls, assembling furniture. If you are doing regular home renovations, you can purchase a dual beam laser level. This will not cause large losses to the budget, and will reduce the time for applying markings. For more serious work - installing partitions, leveling floors, walls, etc., two intersecting planes are needed. In this case, give preference to models that project both horizontal and vertical beams. This way you can start marking the ceiling and floor. When choosing a model with this function, pay attention to the use of planes separately. Intersection will not always be necessary, but it will noticeably “eat up” the battery charge.

In addition, functions such as nadir, plumb or zenith will be useful for serious work. Everyone knows what a plumb line is for, but zenith and nadir are needed for installing racks indoors, for example, when building a partition. Professionals will need more complex models that can create several parallel planes horizontally and vertically, and are also equipped with a function for sweeping half-planes to the left and right. This is necessary when several people are working at the site at the same time. Everyone will be able to put marks, which will allow the work to be done much faster.

  • Measuring range

Which laser level to choose based on measurement range? This is a key indicator that will influence your choice. Many inexpensive device models have a range of up to 20 m. For an apartment or private house these are good indicators, but for large construction projects and marking out a huge area this will not be enough. For such work, look for models with a range of 50 meters and above.

It is important to note that in many models you can increase the range. You can buy a special receiver for this. Models compatible with the receiver have a specified measurement range in the documents, indicated by a fraction. For example, 40/80 meters. This means that without a receiver the maximum range is 40 meters, and with the device – 80. If there is a dash after the fraction, the devices will not be compatible. For this reason, for street work, simple models with an extension in the form of a receiver are used. You can make markings with it even during the day. If it is not possible to use a receiver, you will have to do the marking at dusk, since in the sun you will hardly see laser beams.

  • Error

Absolutely every measuring instrument has some degree of error, and levels are no exception. They sometimes produce deviations from the ideal straight beam. This is an error. The error is indicated in millimeters per meter of beam transmission. Devices with high frequency can give a deviation of only fractions of a millimeter, less accurate - 3-4 mm/m.

Naturally, it will be better if the error is reduced to zero. But for construction work or repairs, such inaccuracy will not play a big role, and with an increase in accuracy, the price will increase in direct proportion. For standard use, a device with an accuracy of 2 mm is suitable. There will be no errors visible to the eye, and this will not affect the result.

Only architects or construction superintendents need high-precision levels, since their work must comply with all GOST requirements and standards.

  • Battery or battery

The operation of a laser level is based on the LED. They are economical in energy consumption, since they only require a couple of AA batteries to operate, which will provide from 15 to 25 hours of operation (depending on how many beams will work simultaneously).

More expensive models are equipped with rechargeable batteries, but they also cost from $150, and the choice of models with a battery is much smaller. If you want, you can even find devices that run on mains power.

  • Laser level housing protection degree

If you need a level to work outdoors, pay attention to the degree of protection of the housing. It is marked in technical documentation as IP and two numbers. For outdoor work, the indicator should be 55 or higher.

This means that the “filling” of the device is reliably protected from small particles and dust, and the device is not afraid of either snow or rain. If you plan to work only indoors, this value is not so important - the minimum value will be 20.

Additional functions

In addition to the main functions, there are also additional ones. They will greatly simplify the work, but they do not particularly affect the final result.

  • Self-leveling

When choosing a laser level for repair, pay attention to additional features. For correct measurements, you must install the device vertically. In simple models, the position can be checked with simple devices such as a bubble level. It is noteworthy that in some models it is built-in, and sometimes not. Sometimes incorrect readings are possible if the device has changed position during operation. In order not to encounter a large error, you have to check the device and its position several times.

What's all this for? Some levels have a self-leveling function. When deviations from the vertical are even at a small angle (up to four degrees), they adjust the position of the prisms and mirrors so that the readings are correct. If the tilt exceeds the permissible norm, they give a light or sound signal, and in some cases turn off the beams. The device will start working only after returning to normal state.

If you have a laser level with this function, you can easily set it up at the beginning of work and not worry throughout the entire time that you might do something wrong. But at some point it is especially tedious to set the level at a certain angle, and a device with such a function will not allow you to do this. For this reason, it is recommended to buy a model where, if necessary, you can block this function.

  • Self-shutdown

This feature is great for saving battery power. If the device is not moved for the next 10-15 minutes, it will turn off. This is useful, but sometimes it may take longer to work and this feature will be annoying. Whether you need such an addition - decide for yourself.

  • Operating mode based on temperature data

If you are going to work in the warm season or only indoors, this does not matter. Typically, the device is operated at temperatures from 5 to 40 degrees, i.e. They are suitable for heated rooms and summer work.

However, you should choose a different type of laser level if you intend to use it during the cold season as well. To do this, you can find frost-resistant models that can easily withstand down to -10 degrees. There are also more stable models, but they are few and you will have to look for them for a long time

  • Mounting type

In addition to the standard installation of the level on a horizontal plane, sometimes additional options are required, which will help to make the following additions:

  1. Special tripod. This is usually needed for outdoor work, but for some interior work (horizontal markings when hanging furniture) it will also be useful. Sometimes a tripod is included, and sometimes not. When purchasing, pay attention to the diameter of the thread on the level body - the one on the tripod should be similar.
  2. Magnets. Magnets are prudently soldered into the body of some models. This allows you to attach the level to any metal surfaces/parts.
  3. Magnetic stand. Some devices come with plastic pads with magnets soldered into them. A platform is placed on a metal surface, and a level is placed on it.
  4. Nail/screw. The body of the laser level has a hole for the head of a nail or self-tapping screw. This is not a very convenient method of fastening, but it is better than none.

For comfortable use, you can come up with your own mounting method.

Pay attention to how close to the wall you can install the device. The closer the beam is, the better the wall surface will be leveled, and it will be easier to make markings. It all depends on the design features of the case - the slots for the beams should be slightly moved outside the case.

  • Shockproof and manually adjustable

When choosing a laser level for construction, the shockproof nature of the device will be very useful. Repair or construction is a high risk area for all tools, as things often fall. If the body is additionally reinforced, you don’t have to worry so much when the level drops. But sometimes after a fall the level gets confused and starts to lie. To do this, you need to manually configure the indicators, as described in the instructions.

Models for domestic use in an apartment

For infrequent use in an apartment, any cheap device will do. Let's consider the most suitable models.

FIT IT 18 605

A cheap laser level with quite decent characteristics. It has great accuracy and projection range, so it can also be used on construction sites. Powered by AA batteries. Can be mounted on a tripod. The downside is that it only produces one laser beam, so it won’t speed up work with tiles, screed and plaster. Cost from 600 rubles.

Laser LevelPro3

A good device that aligns two planes also has limited functionality. Range - 5.5 meters, tape measure included. The cost also starts from 600 rubles.

GLL 3-80 Professional from Bosch

If you move to a higher price range, then you can actually buy a model for 2000 rubles on sale. This is already a completely professional tool, providing the construction of three planes, 360-degree rotation and automatic alignment when deviating from the vertical up to 4 degrees. Range – 30 m, with receiver – up to 120 m.

Bosch PLT 2

In the same price range is a model that can be used for laying tiles on the floor or wall. To do this, the tool builds two perpendicular planes and is equipped with a wall mount.

RGK LP-103

A model with a tripod costs about 5,000 rubles; it builds two planes with a scan angle of 110 degrees at a distance of 30 meters. The accuracy of the constructions is 0.3 mm per meter. Powered by three AA batteries.

ADA TopLiner – from 30,000 rub.

The professional laser plane plotter ADA TopLiner 3×360 is a rotating device with three rotating heads that provide projection of three lines at once with a 360-degree scan. This alone is already a huge advantage over budget options, and if you add high accuracy and visibility of the line even at a considerable distance, then the model clearly outperforms its analogues.

Models for professional work on industrial facilities and construction sites

For professional work at industrial sites, the requirements increase. For such instruments, the necessary conditions, in addition to a long beam projection range, are high accuracy and a 360-degree scanning angle.

Bosch GRL 250 HV

The simplest model in this class, it provides operation at a distance of up to 30 meters, even in bright light. With the help of a receiver, the range increases to 250 m. The accuracy is 0.1 mm per meter. Works in both linear and point mode. The self-leveling angle of the level is 5 degrees. Battery power allows you to work 40 hours without recharging. The cost of the model is from 50,000 rubles.

Geomax Zone20 H

The model is designed for work on construction sites. Range up to 900 meters, scanning angle 360 degrees. Auto-leveling deviation is 5 degrees. The tool is equipped with a remote control. The cost of the model is from 80,000 rubles.

One level is not enough!

If you have not purchased the advanced version, which includes everything you need to work with a laser level, then you may need a tripod, a special mount, glasses, a receiver and batteries.

Tripod

A tripod or tripod is needed for more convenient installation of the builder. Level manufacturers usually provide their devices with a 1/4″ or 5/8″ threaded connection. By the way, if you are interested in photography and have previously purchased a tripod for shooting, then you can also use it to work with markings - it usually has a standard 1/4″ connector. The cost of the cheapest tripods starts at 1000 rubles. You can select the tripod parameters based on the operating conditions of the laser level.

There are also special collapsible rods on sale with a telescopic step, which are installed side by side between walls or floor and ceiling. In our opinion, they are unreasonably expensive, and their use is not always convenient. See for yourself in the example from the video below.

Holder

A more affordable mounting option is a small device fixed to the base using a clip or by hanging it on screws, nails, a magnet, etc. As a rule, they have universal sizes and can be used for various models of plane builders. The cost of such holders starts around 500 rubles, but you need to take into account that they are not suitable for heavy rotary levels. Using the following video as an example, you can evaluate the ease of use of the mount.

Glasses

Special glasses with colored lenses are needed only to better see the markings in bright lighting conditions. Please be warned that they do not act as protective equipment for your eyes. Depending on the color of the laser, products with green or red glass are used. Most often the latter, simply because red lasers are the most common. We recommend buying glasses first, because the price starts from only 170 rubles, and the ease of use is priceless.

Receiver

When working over a large area, especially open objects with good lighting, it is simply impossible to see the beam with the eye, even with the help of glasses. Highly sensitive laser level reflector detectors or receivers help out. Such devices allow you to determine the location of the marking and transfer it to the working surface, thereby increasing the range of the level to 100 meters or more. When the beam hits the detector, it is accompanied by sound and/or light indication. It must be remembered that each receiver is suitable only for the models for which it is adapted. Prices for such devices start at 3,000 rubles. and can reach the cost of the builder himself.

Case

If you are not going to use the laser level often, then to preserve the device you can use the box in which it was packaged by the manufacturer. Otherwise, it is advisable to purchase a cover or case, because... a precision instrument is sensitive to external influences and protection for it would not be superfluous. The price of the first one starts from 1000 rubles, the case is more expensive - from 2000 rubles. Please note that many manufacturers produce device models with different configurations. For example, the basic set includes only a level, the more advanced set includes a level and a tripod, and the complete set includes everything, including a case.

Battery

AA and AAA elements, as well as branded batteries, can be used as power sources. Standard batteries are convenient and versatile and can be easily replaced with new ones. Another thing is the battery. It may fail and disappear from sale. Therefore, if you have a choice, bet on laser levels powered by standard batteries.

Laser level: design and operation features

In order to understand how to choose a self-leveling laser level, you need to understand its structure and operating principle. A standard laser device consists of several systems working together.

This includes:

  • emitters;
  • focus adjustment system;
  • power unit;
  • mechanism for leveling and maintaining level;
  • Control block.
