Capsule in Paton
The capsule serves to ignite the powder charge. It consists of a cap, impact composition and a foil circle.
Capsule: 1
-
cap;
2 -
shock composition;
3 -
foil circle.
The cap serves to assemble the capsule elements and is made of red copper or brass. It is inserted into the capsule socket with tension. The inside of the cap is varnished. The impact composition is covered with foil to protect it from moisture. Mercury fulminate, potassium chloride and antimonium are used to prepare the shock composition. A significant drawback of all Russian cartridges is the use of Berdan primers, which are an outdated design, since they use mercury fulminate in the shock composition - an extremely aggressive substance that causes corrosion of barrels after firing. In the West, they use Boxer system capsules that have a non-aggressive impact composition.
